  1. Not great news but if you were to pick somewhere to have an injury then the bullpen would be it.
  2. Me too. I was shouting at the radio that Sanchez hasn't pitched above A ball and walked over 4 per 9IP even at that level. Very happy that he got sent down very shortly afterwards.
  3. OK, I'm officially getting concerned now. Pitchers & Catchers report today and there is still no free agent signing. I'm trying to stay calm and believe that AA will get one (or two) free agents but it's getting worrying that nothing seems to be happening. Jiminez, Santana, Drew and Capuano could all really help the team right now, the time is right to give up draft picks and the price isn't going to come down much more, if at all. Please do something to fill the obvious holes. Please!
  4. But, but, but..... look at his 5 Gold Gloves! Seriously though, great player but not the best of all time. Not even the best of my lifetime. Probably top 5 of my lifetime.
  5. I'm really, really close with my guess Sign: Ubaldo Jimenez Acquire: Dustin Ackley Trade: Casey Janssen
  6. AA - sign this guy now! No such thing as a bad one-year deal. Not star signing by any mean but a guy who will give you innings that aren't throw by Redmond, Nolin, Wang, Jenkins, Ortiz etc.
  7. What is Seitzer supposed to say? "I think Goins is a crappy hitter and he's got no chance of providing real value other than as a defensive specialist"? Of course he's going to say the right things and try and Goins some confidence going into the season.
  8. Remember that the Jays are an international business. Currency fluctuations are very well known and are pretty easy to hedge against. This will very likely be a complete non-issue.
  9. I think it's worse than either the AL East or West to be honest. I also think that Detroit are a decent side so they should win it, getting through to the last 4 almost certainly. Their odds are 4.85:1 and I give then a 4:1 chance to win it so my money would be there.
  10. Boringly I'd take Detroit. They are a good team in a bad division and they look an almost certainty to make the playoffs as division winners. I'll always take a team that's going to be in the final four over a team in a good division that need to play a lot more good teams to have a chance.
  11. I was looking at the AL pennant odds.
  12. Sierra can play OF, 1B or DH. I think it's safe to assume that Bautista, Rasmus and Melky are the starting OF and EE gets the 1B position. Lind is at DH so Sierra only has a bench spot. If it's a bench spot then you already have Thole and Izturis so he's fighting for one of the last two spots for him. You need a back up CF and imho Sierra cannot do that job, neither can anyone else on the team right now so he can't have that spot. He's stuck fighting for the last spot on the bench, possibly as a platoon partner for Lind and a pinch hitter for Lind/Rasmsus/Goins/Navarro late in the game Right now I think I'd like to see him make the team, mainly because I really hate 8 man bullpens and him being there means that won't happen.
  13. This is a good time to remind people that all the odds represent is how much money bookies have taken on each team. All the odds really do is to try and guarantee that the bookies will win whatever the outcome. 21/1 just means that your "average" punter hasn't seen any flashy moves by the Jays so they're not betting on them. They've seen the Mariners get Cano and have bet on them purely for that reason.
  14. Yeah, less than 10% is my guess. The aversion (correct imho) to long term deals will stop us offering biggest contract and his desire to win will mean he signs elsewhere.
  15. Ha! Nope, from the first girl I saw on TV that I fell in love with, Daisy Duke
  16. Exactly. I mean, Melky made up a fake website and only got 50 games.
  17. This is wrong, IMHO. I just don't see what ARod did to deserve over 3 times the length of suspension that everyone else got. I don't like the guy but it just feels wrong to me.
  18. Do you think Janssen plus Happ for Ackley works? SEA get a (Capital C) Closer plus pitching depth and give up a blocked prospect. TOR get a 2B and save about $8M to spend on pitching. Both teams look to benefit in my eyes.
  19. Where's the option for both of them? I'd love to give up 2nd and 3rd round picks and get them both. Maybe even offer both QO's and upgrade to two picks in the mid-30's rather than one in the mid 40's and one in the late 80's.
  20. Not sure about Happ - he provided 1.2 fWAR last year in a season cut short by injury to only 92 IP. I wouldn't say he's producing below replacement level, what he did in 2013 was worth the $5.2M he got paid, roughly. If he'd stayed healthy I don't think 2.0fWAR was out of the question to be honest. Izturis was utter crap last year though, point taken there.
  21. I'd like to see both Jiminez and Santana - maybe 4 years $55M and 3 years $40M. The beneift being that if you sign one of them then the other's cost in terms in losing draft picks gets incrementally smaller and you could make this up in the future if you offer one of the a QO. This would likely take you over budget with the salaries but then you make a move that sends Happ and Janssen to Seattle for Ackley plus a decent prospect. Ackley is blocked no in Seattle at 2B so he's going to be a 4th OF - Mariners would likely swap him (plus a prospect) for a good reliever and SP depth. This saves Jays $9M which means the overall cost of the move is to add $18M to 2014 salary. Maybe even drop the prospect and ask them to take Romero too - saves nearly $17M instead? Although I don't know if Seattle does this - they move a cheap 4th OF for a closer plus two back of rotation at best arms and increase payroll by $16M.
  22. I had a thought this morning, prompted by Fangraphs doing a pice on where Nelson Cruz could end up. They mentioned that only the Orioles seem like a reasonable landing place for Cruz but they would like to avoid losing their 1st round draft pick. If AA signs Jiminez then you lose the 2nd round pick, if you then sign Cruz you los the 3rd round pick. Are sign-and-trades allowed in mlb? Could AA sign Cruz then trade him to Orioles for a low end prospect? Prospect would be "worth" more than a 3rd round guy but less than a 1st rouder so both teams come out ahead.
  23. The reason I'm thinking they sign for 4/50 or so is the free-agent draft pick compensation. There are several teams that don't want to give up a first round draft pick for them so the market is limited, much like Kyle Lohse's was last year. Not suggesting that Lohse is as good as Jiminez or Santana, just that he got less than expected because of the draft pick compensation. Maybe I'm a little light on the money, say they get 4/55 each that's still roughly the same as Tanaka total money. If this happens, you give up picks 47 & 83 in 2014 but have the chance of getting back picks around 35 or 36 in 2018. Even if you only get one of those with a QO then it's roughly a wash slot money wise.
  24. Oh yeah. I should probably have read the small print first, huh?
