Lawrie better offensive player

Interesting

Lawrie finished his year with 11 homers and a .254/.315/.397 slash line, one of many disappointing campaigns amidst the epic fail that was the 2013 Blue Jays season. Still, as bad as Lawrie's season was perceived to be, he still finished only 34 OPS points and three homers behind Machado, despite the Baltimore phenom's 268 extra PA. Lawrie also had a higher walk rate and lower strikeout rate, so if you factor in the BABIP gap (Lawrie had a .280 BABIP, Machado had a .322), you can make the case that Lawrie was actually the better hitter last season.

Lawrie breakout season would go a long way to contender status..... and would make Reyes, Rasmus, Bautista, EE, Lawrie the best top 5 lineup in baseball.... the 4 after that might be baseball's worst lol

That's an exageration. Lind and Cabrera make great #6 and #7 hitters.

but.........

Machado GG SS Vs Good 3B

Depends on the vintage

Cabrera is probably somewheres inbetween last year and 2012. Something like .330/.350/.450. Lind will be good as long as the atbats against LHP are limited.

They're both young enough that they're not "complete" yet either though

Machado could improve his plate discipline

Lawrie could reduce his fielding mistakes and re-discover some extra base power

This would be an ideal time to extend Lawrie.

If he has a break out year with the bat he's going to cost $$

Yep. Think Freddie Freeman $ if we wait until he "finds it"

Rasmus I agree with waiting on for multiple reasons

A Lawrie extension after a so-so year seems like a shrewd move that could pay off handsomely. There's some risk but I think less risk than letting him get to free agency.

I'd extend both now..... should be able to sign them both for less than FA money, which means they both will still have significant trade value (ala EE/Bats)

These are two guys to rebuild around if it comes to that

I don't know how you would consider Adam Lind if you were putting him in the 6th spot as one of the worst in baseball. He posted the 24th best OPS in all of baseball last year. That plays pretty well in top of the lineup let alone out of the 6 spot.

Melky Cabrera and Lawrie are the big keys for me. Melky clearly wasn't healthy. You could see the pain on his face every game. He posted a .682 OPS despite all that, which really isn't that bad. A healthy Melky could easily post a .750+ OPS which is above average for a number 7 hitter. If Navarro posts a .700 OPS out of the 8th spot that compares well with other number 8 hitters. The Jays might have the worst number 9 hitter or close to it in all of baseball, but their top 8 look to be very good. This offense is going to score a ton of runs. It's a matter of how well the pitching can hold up.

Even with a really bad hitting #9, if it's Goins, and he plays excellent defense like he did last year, I am completely fine with him being there.

We all know Lind is very capable of s***ing the bed
