RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) in the order you'd like to have them pitch for the Jays in 2014. Throw age and potential salary out the window, just rank them in the order you'd want them on the Jays for 2014. Here are the consensus top names. Matt Garza Ervin Santana Ubaldo Jimenez AJ Burnett Chris Capuano Bronson Arroyo But add any names you wish. Edited January 22, 2014 by RIPEXPOS
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 AJ Burnett Matt Garza Ubaldo Jimenez Ervin Santana Bronson Arroyo I'd like to throw Capuano ahead of Jimenez though. Capuano is a FA?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 AJ Burnett Matt Garza Ubaldo Jiminez Ervin Santana Bronson Arroyo
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Add or subtract any names you wish, just as long as they are UFA starting pitchers.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 The lists here are pretty accurate. I'd take any of them (Including Capuano, Minus Arroyo) on a reasonable contract, but I highly doubt we get anyone for a reasonable amount considering what Tanaka just got.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I'm not sure if a few of these guys have signed or not yet, but I think my order would be Jimenez Garza Burnett Niemann Santana Yoon Capuano Arroyo Hanson
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Jimenez over Garza and Burnett? That's aggressive. I really like Jimenez, and think he's got a chance to really bust out. Best upside out of all the remaining names imo, and even if he doesn't he'll at least eat innings. I'd probably equate Garza and Burnett. Not sure what is up with Yoon, but the fact there's been so little mentioned makes me think he could come fairly cheap (which would make him a non-disaster if he had to switch to the pen). Niemann could be the bargain name of the off-season imo. Santana scares me in RC, but he is a legit arm. Capuano and Arroyo are both probably a small upgrade over the kids for next year. I'm not sure about Hanson, but his velocity is fine which makes me think he'd be a prime candidate for Walker to work with on a 2-seamer and sinker.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Btw, love that bolded "e" in Jimenez JFaS. Wonder if anyone else noticed it
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Garza is my #1, Santana and Jimenez round out my top 3. Jiminez had probably his best year since the CY caliber year. Best K rate he's ever posted. Burnett coming back would just be weird, and I don't see it happening or him doing well if he did. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't think it can happen. If we miss out on Garza, Santana, and Jimenez, I think I just pass over the remaining options and roll with a combination of young guns and/or guys coming back from injury. Missing out on those 3 though, would definitely damper my expectations for 2014. (one of those 3 guys and fantasizing about bounce back years, and perhaps a good trade, could get me excited about the Jays again.)
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Yep! I only learned this last week. "10/31/2013: The Dodgers have officially declined Capuano's club option for the 2014 season." "Christopher "Chris" Frank Capuano is an American professional baseball player, who is a free agent." s***. I love Capuano. I'd be all over that if I was AA.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Just in terms of pitchers realistically acquirable. Burnett Samardjiza Garza Bailey JimEnez Capuano Santana Arroyo
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Just in terms of pitchers realistically acquirable. Burnett Samardjiza Garza Bailey JimEnez Capuano Santana Arroyo Not quite what the thread was about, though interesting to see the viewpoint regardless. But how on earth is Burnett realistically acquirable?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Not quite what the thread was about, though interesting to see the viewpoint regardless. But how on earth is Burnett realistically acquirable? Yeah, but everyone's lists were starting to look a little similar, so I threw a couple guys in there. I figure if we give him the money and do a little convincing it's at least conceivable.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 If we're talking just 2014, I go Burnett, Garza, Niemann, Capuano. In terms of actually signing the player, where you're considering the years beyond just this season, I'll take Garza over Burnett, with the other two following in the same order.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I'm not a fan of Arroyo and I don't want anything to do with Santana and Jimenez. I don't think they're worth the dollars they'll receive, and when you throw in the added draft pick compensation, it makes it an easy "f*** no". I feel like second round picks are very largely undervalued when it comes to free agent compensation. I think that the idea that you're not giving up your first round pick probably is what makes giving up a second rounder a much more desirable and appealing scenario for a lot of people, so it's easier to overlook what you're passing on. In the past three years, the Jays have used their second round picks on Daniel Norris (2011), Chase DeJong (2012) and Clinton Hollon (2013), who, thanks to his hugely underslot signing, allowed us to also acquire Jake Brentz and Rowdy Tellez. All of those prospects are currently well-regarded in the Jays farm system. Additionally, Mitch Nay and Matt Smoral would have also both been second rounders in the current revamped draft format, as opposed to the compensation round picks that they were. I wouldn't give up any of those guys (potentially giving up more, since 2014 is thought to be a very deep draft) for a chance to overpay Jimenez or Santana. Especially since second round picks now also come along with your second biggest draft slot, allowing you much more flexibility later on (as was seen in the 2013 draft).
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Jimenez then Garza on my list. I like AJ, but I don't see him coming back to TO for his last year. I think its Pits or retirement for him.
Key22 Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 We're a fifth place team - we'll be a fifth place team if we sign any 2 of the top 3 free agent pitchers left. IE Jiminex, Garza, Santana, Burnett. Jays sign any 2 of these - still equals 5th place.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 What's the deal with Yoon? there was a bit if hype before the offseason, but I haven't heard his name in months. Expect him to sign in among all the other remaining starters. He doesn't require a posting fee, so he can sign when ever.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Am I missing something with capuano? Is he supposed to be good? I don't see it... Capuano 1,5 to 2 WinsAR for peanuts. Give to him the Happ money.
43211234 Verified Member Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Didn't Burnett say it was Pittsburgh or retirement? Anyways: Jimenez ... Garza Capuano Arroyo Santana
Santos Verified Member Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 1. Ubaldo Jiminez - Best upside of any of the remaining pitchers 2. Matt Garza - Health issues a concern for solid #2 pitcher 3. Ervin Santana - Inconsistent but stuff is there 4. AJ Burnett - NL numbers won't translate in AL East again
