9/10 I'd rather watch a young player be given a chance than pay for some old mediocre player to give us meaningless production.

Everyone has right to their opinion.. as BTS mentioned earlier.. you're in the camp of let a guy fail before writing him off.. others don't want to see the very probable outcome develop

Rasmus traded Get rid of Melky. Lind traded or a dh

All depends on your cup of tea.. personally I would much rather watch an 84 win team play the season than a 70 win team even if neither make the playoffs. I'm not a big draft pic guy unless its the first pic and its Bryce Harper

I'm just thinking that if we have to watch this overpaid group underperform and not come close to the playoffs again, we might as well let the young guys play and see what we have. Same result, but more entertaining, cheaper and better for the future

If they're playing meaningful games into August and September than I'm all for it, but I don't feel too optimistic about that if they couldn't do it last year.

I feel like you don't fully understand just how many bad players are kicking around pro ball. Giving significant major league time to every shitbag in your system, for no other reason than he happens to be in your system, is a really bad way to operate. Thames should have been identified as useless before stepping foot on the field in 2012. Same with Sierra now.

This team isn't going anywhere in the next couple years without some huge moves, which aren't gonna happen. The future isn't Melky Cabrera, or Sierra. Until we get some real prospects or good young players I'd rather give playing time to Sierra and see if he can smarten up than pay Cabrera in a year when were going nowhere.

My grand plan does not include giving Shitbag Sierra significant playing time.

No seriously, what's your plan for this team for the next year

I see a lot more upside in Melky. If the tumour was holding him back you could have an excellent piece to trade at the deadline. I see that as being a lot more likely than Sierra actually turning into a useful player.

Idk, id rather watch young players and prospects, but this team is such a mess we don't really have any of those.

Melky is no. 1 right now on my reasons for optimism. I guess I'm just as sucker for those training videos with Bautista. Who knows what it really means but superficial evidence suggesting that Melky will be in much better playing shape is a lot better than no evidence at all. It would be pretty sweet if he was the player we expected when he was signed.

While I don't see the team as a real playoff contender.. I don't think they are as bad as their atrocious start last season.. it's prob a .500 club and will give some small slimmers of hope of maybe getting that 2nd WC.. as I said, I'd rather see that even if they likely fail over watching C prospects get the bulk of playing time and be awful. Those lineups they would roll out sometimes would just make you not want to care or watch. I would only agree with you if they were Top 100 types.. even borderline talents like that.

The start of 2013 featured alot of Izzy/DeRosa at 3rd, Kawaski at SS and Boni/Izzy at 2nd. Couple that with the injuries/slow starts to our starting pitching and is anyone really surprised we were total s***? This year should be a much better start.

I don't want him on the opening day roster but I want him in AAA. Good bat speed and decent power if he connects. He's just a hacker though. Can still come up and provide some offensive value for small spurts (ala last year) but clearly not an everyday player. Good depth guy though.

You seem confused as usual... this team isn't in a position to pay almost $40m for the services of MB and Reyes unless they're planing on competing. I'm not saying it's gonna happen, but to completely write them off at this point and to suggest experimenting with unproven marginal talents is not being realistic.

your right but I can't help being cynical either since my entire life experience with the jays says to think otherwise.

Doesn't belong on a team trying to win right now, has potential but hasn't proved enough at even the minor league level. Wish we had another option year on him because if this team sucks again and they decide to blow it up he is the kind of guy you give at bats too after you trade away your real players.

Unless acquiring MB, Reyes and others wasn't actually their plan but rather something they stumbled upon. It wouldn't surprise me if their budget was actually 140 instead of the rumoured 150M. We'll see what happens, but not going after Infante or Ellis seems to point to their having little to spend. Ok, this would be assuming they realized that going with Goins is a recipe for another disaster.

I'm split on this decision myself. I really like the potential I see with the bat, but the defense and base running scares me.

Want? No.

Expect? Yes. Never underestimate the effect of small sample size MLB success for Jays talent evaluators, even when that player has almost no minor league track record of success.

It's really hard to understand this offseason. Either they had money and they just backed themselves into a corner by only focusing on the top starting pitchers or they didn't have money but didn't really do anything to free some up either.

At first the team was talking like they had the means to bring in as many as three starting pitchers and then they kind of clamed up. Where they too optimistic at first? Did the payroll get locked down? Strange offseason. Sometimes it seems like the Jays aren't operating in the same reality other teams are.

Well then he can go f*** himself then

Pretty sure AA is just talking him up to trade him. We'll probably see Santos and Sierra shipped out before the season starts.

Nah. All AA and the brass ever said was that payroll was going to increase for 2014, and that's 100 percent accurate, since the cost of the same roster from last year was going to cost more money without any moves, namely about 17 million more. The only increase in spending on different players so far has been Navarro over what JPA would have cost.

Who knows is about right. If there's no money to add to the team, then I blame the higher-ups since there's no way you authorize the Marlins trade without understanding the ramifications on future payrolls, starting in 2014. We'll have to continue to wait and see.

Anyone know if Pillar had strong platoon splits in the minors? I'm kind of intrigued by him now that the initial hype has receded. If you look at teams that excel at getting value out of unheralded players (TB, STL), the players they employ look a bit like Pillar. Pillar could theoretically be a line drive hitter with a solid platoon split, solid defense and reportedly, he has the kind of "want" that allows scrubby players to maximize their talent. If he hadn't been so bad in a small sample size last year, he'd probably be a bit of a folk hero among the casuals with a 100 page "Can Pillar stick" thread in these parts. Maybe I'm squinting too hard to see somehting in him but Sierra and Gose are such s*** shows right now that I'm starting to want to like Pillar as a kind of poor man's Reed Johnson.

No, I think you're bang on. I'd love to see him have a killer ST and get excited about him.

I get the same feeling, but I'm quite concerned about this tunnel vision. Assuming he's targeting a player on a non-contending team, AA has a lot more incentive to reach a deal before the season starts.

Who do you think he has his eyes on, Bailey?

Posted
I think Price.

By the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I almost wish he does trade for Price just to see how badly AA gets bent over by Friedman.

Depending on who signs Tanaka, we could see a starting pitcher from that team possibly shake loose in the aftermath as well. Edwin Jackson perhaps? He's definitely not a top of the rotation guy, but his contract looks a hell of a lot better now and he's reasonably solid.
