So, if a player goes down for the year like JJ might, does insurance pay back the team like 80% or more or the team is on the hook for the full contract?

very few (or none probably) insure their short term deals. Also most policies exclude areas that have been injured before.

The insurance the Padres got was the $4MM option for 2015 if he gets hurt. I expect they'll activate it, but they may not. We're in Rich Harden/Brett Anderson territory.

And we had a deal in play, until Medlen was hurt? AA played a game and lost. Although I think Santana's a POS!!

Yes, he lost, no doubt. However, the attempt was made. You said it was a fish they should've caught before and I pointed out that it may not have been possible since Santana's demands came down only around 5 days before he signed and the Jays were right there.

I'm sorry guys, but you've got to admit when you're wrong... The reason he wasn't signed is OBVIOUSLY because of his injury issues, and rightly so!!

Personally, I thought he would have a great year and AA would get blasted for not offering him arbitration, but he wasn't signed because he was too great a risk.

C'monman, it was the NL snagging him.

That's part of what I've been saying, he clearly wanted to play in the NL if the chance came up. Anyway, hopefully some luck strikes the Jays on the rotation front.

If Johnson had a clean bill of health in the offseason, then I believe they made the wrong move, regardless of what happens.

I dont know what the team knew, so I can't say for sure though.

We also don't know for sure how much $ they had available. We know they offered 14M to Santana, but there's talk of asking players to defer some salary to be able to afford it, unless I'm mistaken....it's been known to happen!

If they had $14M PLUS the draft pick for Santana, then it was there for Johnson. There was obviously some current health concerns with the Padres deal. Only $8M and the injury clause screams bad medicals.

Yeah, that he only got $8M and that option is a dead giveaway.

I think this sums it up perfectly.

I initially felt Anthopoulos was making an error however since at that time I believed money was not an issue I deducted that it was either an issue with his perceived health going forward or Anthopoulos was having discussions with other GMs and felt something in the works would be better suited for the rotation. If it was the latter, then the timing of the moves most probably could not be synced up so he went with his gut feeling. If it was the former, then he really had no choice and as such would not make this information widely known cuz it would negatively impact Johnson's position. Whatever the scenario, the fans really were grumbling without all the facts even though they commented as if they had insider's information.

So despite his injury history he was worth $13.5M and a prospect or two to our FO...but he puts up pretty similar peripherals and he's no longer worth the risk. Essentially the Jays bought high (coming off a non injured season) and stopped believing in him because he gave up way too many HRs in the time he pitched here (and added one more injury to his list). I'm not a JJ fan myself...but the risk was money not injury.

I wanted JJ for 8-10M rather than 14.3M, with the feeling that the savings from that gamble might help us afford to get Infante or Drew.

Obviously I was delusional. JJ wanted 14.3 to stay here, failing that he wanted a cushier place to pitch. Also, AA wasn't going to buy a FA 2B anyway so it was moot.

I was fooled and despaired this off season.

I know what I knew.... I never seen a supposedly good pitcher look so bad.... for that long a time.
