GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Ya he'll give assets, but not money lol. Money is an asset, because I'm feeling like a pedantic bastard that completely understands your point regardless. But I feel like if there's one free agent that he's going to spend huge on, it's Tanaka. I've learned to expect absolutely nothing from this team and keep my hopes down (I was HOPING for 2nd wild card last season lol) so when we miss out on him I'm not gonna be terribly disappointed, but putting 2 and 2 together I wouldn't be surprised.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I wouldn't be shocked either way, that being said I think it's pretty unlikely. I think he may end up signing Santana or Ubaldo if he does make a big splash.

There's certainly some signs recently that he will be competitive on Tanaka, but there's also a good chance that Tanaka will prefer a west coast team. I think the talk about the Jays possibly going more than 5 years is the biggest hint he'll be on him, and the timing regarding Kawasaki is also interesting. I wonder if Rogers could have their eye on expanding their demographic regarding sports.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Darvish all over again. Guys, give your head a shake, he ain't coming to Toronto, never will.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Darvish got ripped off so bad due to old posting rules. But, he accepted...
Caper Verified Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 It would be funny if AA bid 19.99 million.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Lol at the sperm balloons @ 11:17. Is that Andrew Jones during the celebrations? After 160 pitches the day before (~200 pitches in 2 days)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 After 160 pitches the day before (~200 pitches in 2 days) With our luck he signs with the Jays, throws 55 pitches and blows his arm out
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I just looked again at Darvish's 2013 numbers. Holy s***, what a BEAST season he had. Led the majors with 277 strikeouts AND the lowest hits/9 in the AL. ERA+ 145. Yet he got got little attention it seemed, thanks to Scherzer I suppose. For what the Rangers are paying him, he's one of the best deals in baseball.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 With our luck he signs with the Jays, throws 55 pitches and blows his arm out With our luck he signs with the Yanks and becomes in the next Iwakuma or Darvish.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Moderator, merge please. With Darvish's auction, we, the Jays fans suffered a lot; sleepless hours, disappointment, anger and others s***. The media mocked for us. Report: The Blue Jays are the high bidders for Yu Darvish Craig Calcaterra As we noted last night, nothing will be official until next week, but the New York Post is reporting that the Blue Jays have made the highest bid for negotiating rights for Japanese sensation Yu Darvish. The Post reports that “according to several sources with knowledge of the situation,” the Blue Jays owner, Rogers Communications, ordered the team to bid upwards of $40-50 million for the rights to negotiate with Darvish. If they are the winners, they would then have 30 days to get him under contract, which could cost an additional $75 million, many speculate This time things are different. The 90% of Jays smart fans know that the Jays FO will not offer a good contract to Tanaka. In resume. The purpose of this thread is to pray for Tanaka doesn't sign with the Yankees.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Is Kenta Maeda available?
flafson Verified Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I guess it's probably a good thing to have a max of 20 mil. They just need to convince the player to come.

This doesn't help the small market in MLB as people think. Now there will not be an auction, will be a free agency where the most powerful will win.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Would you rather pay Tanaka 18-20M per over 5 or 6 years or sign a Garza/Santana/Jimenez for 15M over 4 or 5 years? What about Tanaka over trading for and extending Shark? It's a lot of money, but the Blue Jays made the decision to give up a big chunk of their future to try to contend now, they'll likely have to spend either on the remaining FA pitchers or trade more of their future for a Shark type. I say get Tanaka and flip him to the Mariners for Walker and Franklin.

All this new system does functionally is give more $ to the player and less to the Nippon league team that posts him.

I don't know if the previous system helped small-market teams more. And I don't really see anything wrong with the player reaping the fruits of his talent, just like MLB FA

Beeston would be delighted to have Tanaka in their team, that could mean "rise ticket sales" lol

If JJ hadn't been as bad/unlucky as he was, I think they would've made the QO so that's 14M right there plus they could conceivably find a taker for Janssen/Santos and even Happ, given what teams are paying for 5th starters. Should be interesting, but the Blue Jays will probably offer 60/3 plus 3 option years.

The Jays can't say they are win now mode without doing what it takes to actually win.

You know what you're getting in to at least, as a team/GM/owner. And the player should get the benefit. The posting fee still needs to be just enough to make it worthwhile for the team a player is leaving.

Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Anybody else think that the comments AA made about going beyond 5 years for only certain players was in reference to Tanaka? The Ohka and Kawasaki signings could just mean nothing, but maybe they do. Dickey and MB will be off the books soon, and beyond that we have no one. Tanaka just makes too much sense, especially after missing on Darvish. Just trying to think positive this holiday season guys. I'll be back to my grinch self in 2014.
