He will go to mariners with his buddy Iwakuma

In all seriousness, I think the Jays have likely been pitching trades for Iwakuma and/or Ackley for some time now. Tanaka could easily end up being a Jay, multicultural city and the Kawasaki thing might be a leading sign. If we get either guy it's enough I think for us to have a decent to good staff next year. Good chance either Morrow/Stroman/Hutch combo provided one guy who can pitch.

I wouldn't say easily

The possibility is definitely there. It's not something i'm expecting, but I wouldn't be surprised.

You can't picture AA outbidding himself a la JZ to bring "teh nxt Yu Darvish"?

No chance AA lands Tanaka. AA clearly has no ability to function in the free agent pitching market and this is basically that. I'm sure he put in the 20 million posting fee, and throw out some wacky offer that is less than 5 years and low on money because that's what the Jays "value" on him will be, which will be nowhere even close to market value.

Maybe that's not a bad thing.

I doubt it, Tanaka is a stud. I'd be shocked if he doesn't get at least 6/$100M, not including the bid obviously. There will be a dozen or more teams that bid the $20M max.

Jays modus operandi

I hope we get him but I'm not going to allow myself to get the hurt the way I did with Darvish

Epic fail. I couldnt sleep for 3 days.

I've been hearing Kuroda comparisons thrown at Tanaka. While not a bad thing (Kuroda is very underrated), not sure he'll be worth the contract he'll likely get this offseason. We'll see, I suppose.

We have Kawasaki, Ohka and Boxy -------> Tanaka you're next

I'll be there, bro. I'll make him feel extra comfortable due to my Asian-ness, he'll probably even take less money so that he can hang out with me, a AAAA funny Japanese guy and a has been. Who says you need to win to get guys to sign?

The Yankees are probably the favorites but What is the penalty for going over the luxury tax threshold - the Yankees CLAIM the don't want to go over but what is the penalty? Loss of draft picks? a 1:1 financial tax? If they really are serious about not going over the threshold then they may have to be careful. So might the Dodgers.

MLBtraderumours says the Cubs will not be outbid for him.

I don't see the Jays having much shot at it. There is no plus coming to Canada I don't think unless Toronto has some sort of special appeal that I don't know about. It's a nice City but so is Seattle or NY etc so I am not sure what the draw is. I was born in Toronto and weather wise I would take the west coast - BC or Seattle in a heartbeat over living in Toronto.

New York may not be able to give him the most money (if under LT) but they can sell him on marketing where he can make a cash windfall selling himself via promotions of products that players in TO can't do.

Like most free agents the Jays will probably have to offer 1-2 more years than ANY other team in baseball and will probably have to pay 2 million PER SEASON more than anyone else - so if the top bid is 6/90 the Jays would probably have to go 7/119 or 8/136 just to be considered.

And AA and the Jays have the 5 year maximum BS thing. To be honest I doubt AA and the Jays put in a bid. But I really hope that the league lists all the teams the post a bid - IMO it should be disclosed to fans so we can see which teams are serious about winning. And at the end - all final contracts should be listed as well- hey we offered the most money but he chose Seattle cause he has a sister there or something - It can actually help the GM - if AA offers the most cash and doesn;t get him you can't really blame the guy. If it's all hush hush then Alex is ripped for being a cheap d-bag.

Lmfao, it's amazing what the feeble-minded will come up with. "Durrrr he wants to play here because he wants to pretend he's still in the place he's choosing to leave!!!"

Good job! You spelled everything correctly!

But in the end, dialogue and many balls in the air. Also, dialogue.

Hard to say who gets him. And regarding NY, even though they want him, they risk paying 50% extra for every dollar over $189M, which they are already over as it stands unless A-Rod gets suspended. Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, D-Backs are probably the faves.. but I can see AA being interested.

There's no doubt in my mind the cubs will put the highest bid in but is he going to go for the most money or a chance to win? I think he'll end up with either dodgers or yanks.

I really doubt tanaka comes to the jays. I see him going to the yankees, cubs, diamondbacks, dodgers or the angels before toronto. If anything the fact he is going to be posted could be a good thing for the jays in the sense that one team is going to sign tanaka and than that would mean yet another team will be out in the garza/Santana/Jimenez sweepstakes and give the jays a better shot at 1 of the 3

The only one of those 3 that I think the Jays should spend money on is Garza.

He's a serious FA, and a serious team that wants to win will land him. Most likely the dodgers but I could see the dbacks/cubs also. The cubs want young guys, and he fits that bill, plus being intl and not costing a draft pick. If he was 10 years older and required 1-2 prospects + was overpaid then I think the Jays might be interested.
