burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 So why exactly is Navarro still on the team? I doubt you are going to get anything in return now. Where exactly are they going to play him to be worth the 5 million?

Where exactly are they going to play him to be worth the 5 million? I'd rather have Smoak at 1B than Navarro at DH, so I hope they don't keep him around. I think trading him for simply salary relief would be justifiable. Either Alex is holding out for a real return or there are simply no takers. I could buy the latter. Navarro is not very good.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 What's your bet they trade Refsnyder or Pirela now? For some reason, the Drew deal makes me think they're going to package Refsnyder and others for a high-end starter because of their concerns about the fragility of Sabathia, Tanaka and Pineda. Good thing the deal's for low money.. what if his bat doesn't rebound back to at least 2013 levels?

I don't think moving Navarro is a issue. His inability to frame pitches is well known but I am sure teams have made calls, specifically the Daimondbacks. I am thinking AA is trying to hold out for more or not getting what he wants or wait for a bidding to start closer to when catchers/pitchers report. Whatever the case I'd be shocked if Navarro isn't moved.

The Gregorius/Pirela middle infield is so bad that Drew won't even have to rebound all the way to provide an improvement.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 The whole point of trading Lind was to free up DH for Edwin and to periodically rest Bautista and Reyes during the season. Start Edwin at DH, Smoak/Valencia at 1B, and trade Navarro's contract to any team willing to take him.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Drew and boras are *******s, for everyone else its 10 mill but Yankees it 5 plus incentives. Are they purposefully depressing his market? No kidding, 7m request, turns into BS?

AA said they could move him for salary relief if they wanted to earlier in the offseason but weren't going to move him for the sake of moving him (sounds like holding out for a return) Its gotten to the point though where team are starting to get pretty close to their budgets so I hope he trades him just for the flexibility soon. Navarro really has no place on the team. He isn't more valuable than Valencia or Smoak at equal money so he would just be a waste.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Holy s***. Just listened to a Podcast with Bernie Pleskoff and the guy is unbearable. Literally seems like the guy in that awful baseball scouting movie within the last couple of years. Edit: Here is the link If you want a cringeworthy quote go to around the 30 min mark. He talks to the hosts of the podcasts like they are 10 years old and haven't watched a baseball game before. When they themselves probably could put a better team together as a GM. And it probably means Refsnyder's being dealt. They promised to give Refsnyder a shot.. once again, the Yanks still won't commit. It's why they'll be likely on a treadmill of mediocrity for a while.. there's no Core Four(Jeter/Rivera/Posada/Pettite) coming in the Yankees system anytime soon.

Arizona has Gosewisch and a Rule 5 pick projected for opening day, Texas has Chirinos and unproven prospect Tomas Telis. Expect them to get desperate for a catcher closer to Opening Day.

White Sox too. Can't imagine they really want Flowers starting again.

They really shouldn't deal Refsnyder. They are in a much better position if they give themselves the option of sliding Drew to short and starting Refsnyder at 2B should Didi falter. If the thought process behing sigining Drew is to then trade Refsnyder than they'll just be robbing Peter to pay Paul so to speak.

Yeah, well a lot of the commenters here were on board with the Yankees youth movement, and don't really like the idea of Drew supplanting Refsnyder: http://riveraveblues.com/2015/01/yankees-sign-stephen-drew-112748/
