The Yankees offense has a 113 wRC+, fourth best in baseball. It's looked spectacular.

Yankees will score runs and they look like they have a good starting rotation. (Presuming Tanaka and Pineda continue to perform)

Infield defense and bullpen are their problems.

Actually just checked the stats, and you're right. Totally surprised me. Everytime I see scores it seems like they've struggled on offense.

And this is why it seemd that way. They're only 9th in the AL in runs, despite being top 3 in avg/obp/slg. I still maintain the team is not going to be that good with the bats. Still early.

Every team looks like it struggles on offense these days! It's a new era.

Being ninth in runs is just situational bad luck. It doesn't mean they've been bad with the bats.

No I get that. They've actually been really good with the bats. I don't think this team will end up anywhere near the top of the league in wRc or anything like that though. I see it as maybe a league average offense when all is said and done. They will live or die by that rotation.

Damn Chase Utley already at 1.5 WAR. Guy is on a very reasonable contract.... I'm sure RAJ will get offers for him throughout the season but will hold on to him in a desperate last attempt to contend.

And so will we...

Looks like there's a show called Numbers Never Lie on TSN 2 in a few minutes, where athletes and stats guys will debate against each other. Not sure how old the program is, but might be amusing (or really dumb).

JPA with an RBI groundout against the Mariners today. Solid offensive produkshun.

Good Christ. Listening to Sid and Perkins talking about WAR is f***ing painful.

Sid: "I don't know how the stat is put together"

seconds later

Sid: "I think it's garbage"

Except, in this case, they are right. Defensive WAR is a piece of crap stat. Ranking Lawrie #28 among 3B this season defensively is a joke. Look, I remember when I started reading some of the stuff people say on this site about past Jays like Alomar and their defence, posted by kids who never saw them play but they believe in defensive WAR. I looked at their numbers. They don't even correlate well between seasons and I know the numbers on Alomar are absurd.

Let's face it, admitting that defensive WAR is a joke makes WAR somewhat of a joke. And that upsets people.

Boogers has his first homerun. Kid has a ridiculously advanced approach for a 21-year old.

But does he play the game the right way?

I don't know what the WAR numbers are on Alomar, but it should be said that there were some people who did believe he was overrated defensively who did see him play, back in the day. Bill James is one of those.

Just because the stats don't meet your observational bias doesn't make them wrong.

In Tampa for the weekend, catching the Rays/Yankees game tonight. Erik Bedard making his first start tonight. Would have liked to seen David Price or Alex Cobb, though Bedard being Canadian is a plus. Wearing my WBC Canada jersey at the Trop tonight.
