Pirates To Extend Starling Marte

By Jeff Todd [March 26 at 9:54am CST]

The Pirates have agreed to extend another outstanding young outfielder, locking up Starling Marte to a six-year, $31MM deal that includes two option years. The contract kicks in for the 2014 season, meaning that it will extend team control over the 25-year-old by three seasons.

Joe Blanton released

Career over? Wow he was terrible last year.

I'd bring him back on a MiLB contract. He still had good ratios last year.

BB/K yes, but tons of hits and home runs relative to IP

Bring him in!

Ditch the sinker, throw the cutter more and he could be around what his xFIP suggests.

No such thing as a bad minor league contract, as they say

Rosenthal

A-Rod will earn nearly $2.9M in 2014 because players paid over 183 days, not 162. Players objected and are driving revisions, sources say.

Lol wow. A-Rod will earn more than most people will earn in their lifetime by doing LITERALLY NOTHING.

It's absolutely outrageous how wrong that is

He signed a contract and is complying with collectively-bargained terms... A-Rod deserves every penny of that $2.9M.

Tommy Hanson released by the Rangers. Nah, I'm not going to suggest picking up, but just noting how far he's fallen from being such a promising young pitcher a few years ago. Perhaps he can give the Astros a call...

Why do these clowns keep taking competent second basemen and trying to move them to a corner outfield?

Because trading for a s***** corner outfielder didn't work out?

I'm gathering info on Lineup spots and am through 230 AL lineups (still a quite small N). Who wants to guess what spot has the lowest leverage index per plate appearance (0.9615) and the most (1.0347)?

8th and 2nd.

I'd sign him to a minor league deal. No worse than Happ, and I'd give him a shot over Blanton. Put Hanson on the Delabar program. Maybe it works for him.

Just curious, but do you think Jed Lowrie could play second base?

My reasoning is Addison Russell is the SS of the future in Oakland, so that means Lowrie might be shopped around possibly at some point this season. He's a free agent I believe in 2015, so if Oakland is out of the playoff picture come June, there's a good chance he's shopped. Do you think he'd be a good target to play second base for the Jays? We know how AA loves to trade rather then sign FA's, so it wouldn't surprise me to them trade for Lowrie and try to work out an extension. What do you guys think?

Jays SHOULD be all over him next offseason.

Knowing the A's, they'll just win 25 games in August if they are out of the playoff picture.

Wouldn't they look to move Sogard first? I'd be fine with Lowrie, no doubt.

They likely won't retain Lowrie as a FA since he'll likely cost too much for them, so that's one of the reasons why I think he could be moved.

That would be a good target, although I really don't see Oakland being out of the playoff picture. Lowrie is definitely someone to go after next winter, although a lot will depend on whether he can stay healthy again this year.

Meh

I'm not counting them out since Texas has a bunch of injuries to key guys and its not like Mariners or Astros are good enough, though the A's losing Parker for the entire year and AJ Griffin out for a while does have an impact on their rotation. As well, Jaso is slotted to be their full time DH and I don't think he has the bat to produce a lot of value there, even despite his good .OBP he's demonstrated. Moss could regress, and same with Donaldson I expect. I still like the A's, though they are more vulnerable this season and things could go wrong for them in a hurry especially if they lose some of their other main guys to injury.
