Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Not sure why 'cause the old man is better player than Izturis or Goins
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Good lord why do we need old creepy looking guys. Is this more Vetrin Presentz
admin Site Manager Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I suggested we traded for him and Willingham last year. Thank god we didn't lol. Willingham had a terrible year as well.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 That's not really saying much. upgrade Do you prefer Brandon Phillip$$$$?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 Marginal upgrade. If you want to upgrade... Actually upgrade. And yea obvi. I'm Ok with Izturis/Carroll and Tanaka, Colon, Baker
Jays Verified Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Carroll last year 43 wrc+ and -0.9 WAR.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Marginal upgrade. If you want to upgrade... Actually upgrade. And yea obvi. He's versatile as f***. He's be a good bench option if the Jays didn't already have Izturis. Sadly I think he'll be brought in to compete with Goins for the starting job. Looks likes it will be the same plan as in 2013, lots of different guys for 2B and none of them any good.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 sigh 3Ys before: 2.13 WAR/Season
Jays Verified Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 sigh We're forgetting one thing. fWAR does not yet factor in pitch framing or vetrin presents.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Of course they would. Of f***ing course they would have interest in a 40 year old who cant play anymore
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Of course they would. Of f***ing course they would have interest in a 40 year old who cant play anymore I mind this move less than DeRosa and maybe Vizquel in a nutshell, but did AA forget he has Izturis? Why get a guy who would be used the exact same way? Makes no sense. Ugh, can't wait for supporters of this crap to start saying "well he won't get that many ABs!!" In defense of this. Worked out great last two years!

Worked out great last two years! He was god awful last year and his stats were down across the board. Walk rate dropped significant, and his K rate went up. He also found a way to drop his ISO rate. Bringing in over the hill vets over young players who can actually contribute on some level like Goins is absurd. Carrol is someone you pick up mid season when your entire team gets hurt..not someone you target during the off season
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 One step foward, three steps back.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Ah AA loves just wasting roster spots on aging players who can't hit. Omar Visquel 2.0!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Any time you have an opportunity to add a 40-year old infielder who can't actually contribute anymore you do it without question. How fortunate has AA been to be able to seamlessly transition from Vizquel to DeRosa to Carroll? Carroll was quite productive from 2010-2012 (2 WAR or higher). Still, Carroll should not be a target in the offseason, especially as a starting second baseman or as a utility player since the Jays already have Maicer. Carrying Goins, Carroll and Maicer all north of the border is just a complete waste and awful roster management. At least use that bench spot on a bat. I have no problem with Carroll on a minor league deal and he plays in Buffalo, though not on a MLB deal.

With Maicer already here as a utility player/platoon at 2B, carrying Carroll would be awful roster management.

"How will the Jays replace DeRosa?" I think we found our answer.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 so this is what AA does with his time?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 With Maicer already here as a utility player/platoon at 2B, carrying Carroll would be awful roster management. Agreed. Even Carroll on a minor league deal would be problematic. The Jays already have Goins who can act at the first callup in case of an infield injury. They need someone ahead of him on the depth chart who pushes him down to AAA not someone behind him on the depth chart that pushed him to the 25 man roster (and perhaps even starting since the alternative is Izturis).
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 What the f***? Seriously... Can we target a decent bench bat for a change?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 We better be getting two very good upgrades to the rotation if we're going to be having a black hole at 2B.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Agreed. Even Carroll on a minor league deal would be problematic. Well Goins could easily be our backup infielder on the bench with Macier starting and I wouldnt have a problem with that. Probably should carry Sierra north as well to give Lind the day's off against lefties and would add a decent bat on our bench. Carroll's fine in Buffalo but please god not with Toronto day 1
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I think you pretty much have to expect replacement-level from Carroll at this point. Obviously. Don't expect him to post up 2 WAR or higher again. He's almost 40-years-old.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I remember a headline on Bluejays.com a couple weeks ago and I chuckled. "How will the Jays replace DeRosa?" I think we found our answer. Quite sad. This has probably been the first thing on AA's agenda this offseason: how to replace Mark DeRosa!

Well if they decide to platoon Goins and Maicer at second base, then having Carroll as insurance in the minors is fine. Still, not the ideal plan heading into the season with Goins/Maicer as the starting second basemen. Danny Espinosa is available and probably can be had for 20 cents on the dollar. They should go after him.
Jays Verified Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Danny Espinosa is available and probably can be had for 20 cents on the dollar. They should go after him. That's who I want. What would he cost?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 That's who I want. What would he cost? Weren't they considering non-tendering him? Don't think he would cost that much at all.
