Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Sup peeps. Just posted my first article on Smoak. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/20/can-he-really-smoak-it/ Feedback? People tend to love images more than lists of numbers. Maybe consider converting some of the lists into charts and heat graphs (the first list and the fangraphs chart could probably be combined into one, since the data is somewhat related for example).

That is fair! You can certainly make the case that the increase in Hard% has a correlation to the distance the ball travels. Thanks AB. Will work more into that for the future articles.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Sup peeps. Just posted my first article on Smoak. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/20/can-he-really-smoak-it/ Feedback? Pretty good article. Where you stated Smoak as having the 27th highest Hard%, it probably would have been better to show a chart that listed about 6 or 7 players with their Hard%. This would make it easier to visualize where his percantage compares to other hitters, instead of just listing him as having a higher percent than player x, y, z. Again, really good article.

This is a fair point IMO, fangraphs uses this same method in the form of excel sheets and charts. Not a bad suggestion.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Sup peeps. Just posted my first article on Smoak. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/20/can-he-really-smoak-it/ Feedback? Content is a+, typo in the last paragraph ("Justin can Smoak it..."), and some grammar and language issues, which I only bring up because you specifically asked for feedback. Solid contribution to the blog overall!
Nafro Verified Member Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 You make reference to "previous 1st basement" in the article, just need to fix that typo. Though now that I think about it, that may be a witty reference to their defensive ability. If it is I apologize.

baubau Verified Member Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Hey guys, posted another article. This time its about the bullpen and how good it has been for the Jays. After a offseason worrying about it, its pretty elite. A special shout to intential wok for helping me edit this, North for helping me get some ideas on how to relay this point, and GD for... um....... hum... well he was just kida there but, give him a shout anyways! http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/08/29/bulls-in-the-pen/ I know some of the graphs are hard to look at but hopefully not too bad. Again, feedback is appreciated. I am posting this at 1:20PM so chances are I've said something dumm.

Not sure if it was because of Innings out of the pen but he is another weapon down there that makes them elite!

Not sure if it was because of Innings out of the pen but he is another weapon down there that makes them elite! Yep, it was because of the innings he didn't qualify. Only thrown 14.2 innings in the pen. His numbers in the pen are pretty good. 2.91 xFIP and 8.0 SwStr%. That SwStr% isn't really that impressive overall however it is a noticeable improvement from last year's 6.5%. Hopefully its progression of Sanchez and not SSS.

I am posting this at 1:20PM so chances are I've said something dumm. I would suggest not including the names in the graphs that are cluttered, just the data points. Only include the names for the Jays players (make the Jays data points a different color too). That will make the graphs much easier to see, and make the information you're trying to convey stick out. In your first graph, there's no need to start at 0. Start the graph at 3 xFIP.

Your right he doesn't get many swinging strikes but he is elite at getting weak groundballs which on the turf seems to be a large advantage.

I was struggling with that. I had the data points and had individually noted each blue jay but then realized that chart looked weird as you have no idea what its referencing to really or against who. Just jays and a bunch of dots. Think in the future i'll also highlight other names to give a good idea like Chapman or Miller so you can see where they sand clearer. The second point is fair too. Thanks Abo!

Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I really can't argue your picks for either Cy Young. Either one of those three in each league deserve consideration.

Just wait for the votes to come out though and see how far Sale is out of consideration. I'd be shocked if he gets any votes higher than 3rd outside of Chicago.
