Again it comes down to who you can get

For example, I'd take Kuroda over Johnson for 14M in a heartbeat. But will Kuroda sign here? Possibly, but probably not.

This team has trouble attracting free agents.

I don,t see this happening. The QO would bring us very close to the 150 mil we hear as budget. If AA offers a Q O then that would tell me he has more money

or he's a stupid moron. invest 14.1 of 30 millions (injury guy) to add roster isn't a good idea.

Tanaka or Garza 5Y/deal

One question I think you have to ask is can we do better for less or the same amount in free agency and I do think there are better options out there.

Me too. (See above post). But will they sign here?

11. Ubaldo jimenez - blue jays. from april 29th onward, jimenez posted a 2.61 era and 9.7 k/9 in 165 2/3 innings, and he finished especially strong. It seems likely jimenez will turn down a qualifying offer from the indians and will require a new team to forfeit a draft pick, unlike nolasco. Still, he posted an excellent 3.30 era this year and finished third in the nl cy young voting in 2010, so jimenez has upside that nolasco doesn't. Jimenez, 30 in january, seems to have a good shot at the edwin jackson contract: Four years, $52mm. Suitors could include the blue jays, angels, yankees, twins, mariners, astros, nationals, phillies, cubs, dodgers, padres, and giants.

I don't agree with the notion that people won't sign in Canada. Obviously there are some that won't but I think that there are more people that will sign here if we are the highest bidder.

Seems as good a time as any to moan about that fact that Anibal Sanchez declined to sign with us last off season despite being aggressively pursued.

I would think all players have teams where they don't want to go. I would think Cano has places where he knows that he won't want to sign. However we have signed some decent free agents in the passed that have enjoyed it here.

The majority of Latino players don't like to play in Canada. I always talk to Damaso Garcia Jr, George Bell, Tony Fernandez, Manny Lee and all say the same ........... A city difficult to acclimate, a very different culture.

When Jose Reyes received the news of his trade to the Jays He didn't feel very happy.

I had been fawning over Anibal for about two years prior too. To have them come so close is so painful. The entire franchise's fortunes would have changed had we signed him (no need for Dickey).

I know. He's the one I wanted most too (well, after Darvish failure)

So many consequences to the lack of landing a quality free agent starter...

Well they can't ALL play in Miami. Especially if they're good and want to make more than league minimum.

Kuroda will get more than $14m

Bautista, Edwin (via trade) could change the thing, they only have to carry the team to the playoff and the thing would change.

Pirates have high incidence among Dominicans lately but Yankees and Boston still in the lead.

Kuroda on a 1 year deal would be ideal while we see how the young guys develop. Then you can possibly turn him in to a draft pick.

NO. One year deal ~16M

I haven't heard anything on Yankees qualifying him or extending him. Have they announced anything?

Kuroda will think about going to Japan until December. Then he'll either do it, or sign with the Yankees. No chance he comes to Toronto.

OK, I'll stop yakking about it. :)

We could still decline a QO and still work out a deal with JJ

He has said he likes TO and would still consider staying here even if they dont give him a QO

That makes no sense at all. Aside from NY, Miami, LA, San Fran, and Chicago... I don't think I could pick a better city to play in.

The Blue Jays will not be making a qualifying offer to righty Josh Johnson, MLBTR has learned. Even after a lost season wrecked by injuries, there was a small chance that the Jays would overpay to get the 29-year-old under contract for 2014. Had the Blue Jays made the $14.1MM qualifying offer, it's likely Johnson would have accepted, as he's not expected to reach that salary on the open market.

Johnson, profiled by MLBTR here, ranked 30th on our Top 50 Free Agents list. He's expected to be ready for Spring Training after elbow surgery this month, and will be seeking a one-year deal to rebuild value. A few days ago, agent Matt Sosnick told Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press, "If Toronto doesn't make a qualifying offer, we'll probably be looking for a good pitching atmosphere, a good defense behind him and a team with a good chance to win."

I highly doubt he's going to sign here for one year as a free agent on the open market.

His agent seems to think Winz and ERAz are going to build his value. Pitching on the AL East's worst team aren't conducive to achieving those goals.

Johnson had all the leverage here. Although he might not get the equivalent of the q.o. on the open market, he can probably get pretty close and pitch in a better environment to boot. There was just no incentive for him to accept anything less from the Jays and guessing from the quotes his agent was giving the media, he was trying to bait them into offering it.

We'll see if this turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Right now I'm thinking the Jays should have just bitten the bullet and made the damn offer but we don't yet know what AA has in mind for the offseason and whether he'll ultimately make better or worse use of his ressources. The scary possibility is that he didn't have the payroll flexibility in the first place.
