eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 In the postseason, I've said it time before that rotation would be incredible. Completely disagree. Halladay is a stud but AJ is a headcase and Marcum/McGowan have/had serious durability issues. I don't think they'd hold up too well deep into the playoffs.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I wouldn't think this is true at all. As recently as 2011 the Cardinals won the world series. Squeaked in as the wild card, 8th in pitching, 1st in offense. A bunch of 2, 3s as starters. Won a World Series game 16-7, won another 10-9. And actually the 2012 Giants were an offense team, though it didn't appear so because of their park, 106 ops+, 96 era+, beat Verlander 8-3 to set the tone in the Series, admittedly there was a couple of 2-0 games, but sometimes it-s 11-5, sometimes it's 6-4, sometimes it's 1-0, just the way it works. I've mentioned the 93 Jays team... not because it is super unique (ie 2011 Cardinals) but just because it is the last real good team we had, and everyone over 30 should remember it... Good offense, great bullpen, mediocre starters... won world series games 8-5, 10-3, 15-14, and 8-6. What you say is not true. You seem like a reasonable guy... I don't understand why you think something that isn't true. A win is a win, a run is a run. I'm trying to tone it down a bit... but these are things I used to rant about... it's not you, it's humanity, a lot of people are wired funny and like to believe things that aren't true, we could get into religion, finance, medicine, politics, all kinds of topics, humans, even intelligent ones believe things that aren't true, just the way we are. Guess I'll just have to accept it and stop going crazy at all this. Youre not undertanding that the post-season can be a completely different environment. BOS and DET were the two most high powered offenses in the league but in this series they dont have the luxury of facing TOR/MIN and all the fringle mlb guys along the way of a season to pad their stats. We all know how good DET SP is and BOS's has been money as well. Lester had an ace like second half I think, Lackey overperformed by far, and Clay had a superb season when healthy So you cant just expect them to put up the same 5-5.5 runs/game they did during the regular season. On the other side of the ball, if you have terrible pitching and they are up against a team like DET/BOS you can expect them to do worse. Although obviously it doesnt always work out the same way. So you're throwing a big wrench into the run-difference philosophy. Having some level of harmony may seem old school to you number crunchers but I think its ideal. Especially in the post-season.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 That Fielder contract is going to look really, really bad in a few years. 24 million to a fat guy for the next 7 years. The guy has 2 XBH in 89 playoff plate appearances so far in his time with the Tigers . That's a massive bust right there. I assume all the posters who were demanding we sign him aren't admitting it now.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I assume all the posters who were demanding we sign him aren't admitting it now. It is probably because they are left on the old board.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Well, in a 5 game or 7 game series, and if the Jays have Morrow and JJ healthy and at their best during that time, they both can pitch like a Cy Young winner. Over the course of a full season that's a lot to ask from both especially with their injury history. I do agree, the Blue Jays still need an ace and a solid No. 2 (which you cross your fingers its Dickey, or the Jays catch lightning in the bottle with Morrow staying healthy or resigning JJ). Right now we have a 3 , 4 and a bunch of 6,s and 7,s but Dickey has pitched like a 1 and Morrow if he could get healthy and consistent could be a 1 . So add a Cahill for BP pieces or really gamble and offer JJ a Q.O. and roll the dice . A Ruiz behind the plate makes the whole rotation better and surely we can find a decent 5 amongst all that depth . The Buffalo rotation should be darn good too .
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 It is probably because they are left on the old board. Nah, There are lots of them here . Lots of Bad contracts out there now. Pujols, Hamilton , Aroid , Fielder . Just the tip of the iceberg. I agree with AA , No contracts over 5 years .

Just the tip of the iceberg. I agree with AA , No contracts over 5 years . I know that a lot of people on the boards don't like the fact that we don't give contracts out over 5 years. However look at those names you listed and everyone wanted Toronto in on them with the exception of Arod and now they looks like death traps. That is the one thing I will give Blue Jays Management credit for.

I don't think they'd hold up too well deep into the playoffs. AJ in 2008 down the stretch was one of the best pitchers in the AL. A healthy Marcum and McGowan as your No. 3 and No. 4, can't complain. Plus the BP was amazing in 2008 as well.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 You could tell just by this year that he has already started his regression. If I am paying a guy over 200m dollars then I expect more than what he did this year. I would say 2 years this deal is going to look horrific. Fielder isn't the type of player that ages well as he enters his 30's. He won't be worth what he's making for the rest of the duration of his contract.
Jays Verified Member Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 I assume all the posters who were demanding we sign him aren't admitting it now. I called it the worst contract I've ever seen when I first heard the $ and years. Soon, it might not be too far off. 200+ mil for an aging fat guy just didn't sound enticing to me.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I don't think the Blue Jays are trying to build a championship team, they just want to play well enough to keep interest going. Or rather, to sell tickets and merchandise. Of course, AA and Beeston are so inept that they can't even do that correctly.
