The_DH Verified Member Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 We've had many discussions on what we need to get next year such as a starter or two, a catcher etc etc. maybe we should look at what trade chips we have and it'll let us know if we have to go free agency, Japan/Cuba or the trade route. I figure we have the following good chips in the minors Sanchez Stroman Nolin Drabek Hutchison Baretto In the majors we could give up a reliever or two or a bat or two if a rebuild occurs. This tells me that we could pull off one trade but would need a free agent acquisition.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 That's easy, we have no trade chips.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I'm hoping Rasmus goes. Sad truth is we can probably only make a trade for someone good if we trade away a major league player(s) and replace them via free agency. And that's the expensive way to do it.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 I'm thinking this too. As much as I like Rasmus, this level of production just isn't sustainable. May as well see if another team sees him as an impact player going forward. I'm only down with it if Rasmus + good reliever + decent prospect gets us a decent SP and we sign Choo to replace him. Otherwise our OF is too weak. (Cabrera, Gose, Bautista with crap backups won't cut it)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Maybe we could sign Chris Young to replace Rasmus, he won't be too expensive. I'd rather sign McCann for C than Choo for CF. Sure on your second point I'm not down with ANY plan that doesn't involve paying $$ to nab a quality catcher If they don't I might not even be able to watch next year
The_DH Verified Member Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 It sure seems we will have to go after the Japanese pitcher if we want to improve. We are not trading for any starters.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 That's easy, we have no trade chips. Not even super stud Ryan Alomar Goins?

We have little trade bait and seem unable to attract free agent starters so getting a Ruiz (type) even if it is a huge overpay might be the best move AA can make .

There are several quality free agent catchers right when we desperately need one. He HAS to do it.

IF you were Tanaka and you had 3 teams to chose from to start your MLB career would you pitch in Toronto (pitchers park ) in the AL East . IF the changes to the posting system go thru as proposed that will be his option . He can sign with any of the top 3 bidders . I see as much of a chance signing him as signing any top Free Agent starters . Slim to nil.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Yep. There are several quality free agent catchers right when we desperately need one. He HAS to do it. If He can't do that I expect a total rebuild . No point going into next season with the defense we had last year and expecting to compete
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 If He can't do that I expect a total rebuild . No point going into next season with the defense we had last year and expecting to compete Jeff Blair asked Gibby on the air today if there was a chance JPA is the starting catcher next year. Answered (significant paraphrase) "oh yeah. You never know what's going to happen. Alex will be looking for ways to improve the club this off season, but you never know"
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 If JP was Dominican and hadn't been the face of previous marketing campaigns, there wouldn't be any need to ask the question. AA would come out and say "we need to improve at catcher," just as he has said about second base. If AA doesn't get rid of JPA there will be no one at the games, so it will happen.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 If AA doesn't get rid of JPA there will be no one at the games, so it will happen. It's a good thing he has even alienated the casual fans. Much easier to get rid of with less complaining.
The_DH Verified Member Posted September 26, 2013 Author Posted September 26, 2013 Saw McCann in that bench clearing brawl. That's a catcher!!!!
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 It's a good thing he has even alienated the casual fans. Much easier to get rid of with less complaining. The Buffalo fans will love him . he can work on his bat without worrying about defense . DH and play first maybe a little LF .
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Saw McCann in that bench clearing brawl. That's a catcher!!!! Zaun would be all over his sack on the broadcast every single game if we sign him

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Yeah, I was thinking dealing Rasmus and signing a Ellsbury type. That's the wrong order in which to do things.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 Gibbons isn't going to throw a player under the bus?! True. He's probably been about as honest as he can be about JP on the air. They're OBVIOUSLY not happy with his performance. He said repeatedly that JP still has potential but that he needs a new approach and a lot of work. The tea leaves say that means AA is planning to try and replace him.

Jays Verified Member Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Yeah well we he can stay down there until he learns how to take a walk and play good defense. That's cruel. You can't make a guy play baseball until he dies of old age.
