G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 (edited) Assumptions: 1. Bautista and Rasmus are not traded, and are healthy in ST 2. Melky Cabrera is healthy and more mobile in ST and is given the regular staring job in LF 3. No new outfielders are acquired (This means no Shin-Soo Choo, sorry. The money needs to be spent on catcher and SP) Who would you take as your 4th OF and why? Edited September 13, 2013 by G-Snarls
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 If you don't take Gose, who plays CF in a pinch? No brainer.
vdartanian Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 How come no option for Bonifacio!!! In all seriousness it will likely be Gose, but I'd prefer someone who can actually hit. Rajai is a perfect 4th OF, but I don't think he'll be re-signed. Somebody will give him a 2-3yr, year deal at 3-4 mil per.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 13, 2013 Author Posted September 13, 2013 Gose gets my vote too The 4th OF plays a LOT, is important off the bench, and if he's fast can pinch run. Gose is the new Davis AFAIC. I value the defense too much to risk going with Sierra, even though he's a better hitter

I like Rajai, quite a bit actually, but we have to save somewhere in order to afford McCann and Tanaka Gose can do what Rajai did (except hit lefties well) and do some things better (catch and throw) for 500k
CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Gose. Great defense, speed in the late innings... I don't think there is much point in sending him down again; he'll probably lose half year of development time pouting. 4th OF gives him a better chance of putting it together, without the pressure of being a starter.

Agree totally And I can still see the possibility (likely? no) of Gose becoming good enough all around to become the every day starting CF. In that case you can trade Rasmus, or move Melky to DH and Rasmus to LF.

Convo Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Oh, he's a tool allright... Imagine he had the brain tool? He'd be like the next Miguel Cabrera
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 13, 2013 Author Posted September 13, 2013 Screw you... and you're no Choo talk. Choo Choo Train all the way. Sorry but... http://images.wallstcheatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/bubble1.jpg
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I think i heard gibby say in an interview they're looking for a veteran 4th outfielder so gose certainly isn't in there plans for now. So for the free agent market that leave guys like Reed Johnson, Andres Torres, Frank Gutierrez.

Now in a semi platoon it would be OK but his hit tool requires at least another year in AAA . IF we have the money I much prefer a vet with Gose at AAA . Melky scares the hell out of me after watching him this year . We need him to have a healthy solid year both in the outfield and at the plate . Never liked that signing and while Im not right often i was right this time, Anyone who thinks Melky,s bat plays at DH is frigging nuts . Platoon with Lind maybe
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I'm very pleased to see 0 votes for Sierra. Sierra is not an outfielder . he is a AAAA player with not enough bat to DH.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Wouldn't mind Guti. Man if he could only stay healthy . Doubt he has to settle for 4th OF if he can pass a medical

kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Actually our 4th outfielder is likely to be Melky . Unless he gets back on the roids he is a 4th OF again . People post about him being the DH and I wonder what coolade they are drinking . Take a long look at the 1st baseman Lind had a better OPS than . Guys like Fielder, Agon , Pujols etc. For 5 million Lind isn't the problem . At 8 mil Melky is our biggest risk.

I'd say Ricky is much worse, but you're probably just assuming (and I agree) that he is not really a "risk". We've accepted that he's done, and that 7.5M x2 is a sunk cost.
Jay Train Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Have you given up on him becoming a starter?
EdelweissBouquet Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Sierra in a heartbeat, since davis might not be here long.

This year in Buffalo was an obvious spiteful year from him, so what would the point be?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Wouldn't mind Guti. I'd like the Jays to make a play on Craig Gentry in Texas or Bourjos.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Actually our 4th outfielder is likely to be Melky . Unless he gets back on the roids he is a 4th OF again . So the guy we acquire to play LF has to be a burner. Because if Rasmus gets injured or sits, Melky and Bautista would be atrocious manning CF
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Sierra has no options left and if he's not dropped this org is a lot stupider than even I thought. Rajai can go f*** himself, of his 1.0 WAR 0.9 came from his Baserunning, he's been below replacement level even with the BsR since July 1st. One hammy pull and he's negative replacement level for the entire season. Pillar and Gose have options and should be fighting for the 4th spot in Spring against a bevy of minor league contract guys who can play a little CF. Guaranteeing a contract to a forth OF would be completely stupid, so I fully expect it to happen.
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 How is Melky not on the list? I didn't just suggest Lind traded and an outfielder signed, I believe that's what will happen.

See my assumptions in post 1 I'm presuming, for the sake of this exercise, that Melky is healthier and gets the regular LF job

Unless He really breaks out, I image that he'll be part of a small trade in March.
