admin Site Manager Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 lol @ baseball getting two more votes than squash. Wow. With baseball being fairly big in Japan you'd think it would be a no brainer.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 lol @ baseball getting two more votes than squash. Wow. With baseball being fairly big in Japan you'd think it would be a no brainer. Yeah but it was a choice between Wrestling and Baseball and Wrestling has been an Olympic sport since Greek times. It's a shame that both were on the bubble. Wrestling should never have needed to be reinstated in the first place and Baseball was more than worth bringing back for Tokyo.
admin Site Manager Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Yeah I agree. Wrestling originally being removed is ridiculous. Can have 15 diving events, 15 swimming events and all the other crap out there, and they remove wrestling. I remember reading an article when it first happened and the writer listed other events that were still in the Olympics, some of them were unbelievable. Oh right, now I remember one, Horse Dressage

TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 when royal families participate in a sport it unfortunately has pull. I understand that one of presentations in school will be on the IOC event selections and the process. I think I'll be pretty outspoken.

With baseball being fairly big in Japan you'd think it would be a no brainer. Baseball, squash, rugby, cricket, karate, wushu and golf should all be in the Olympics. Heck, mixed martial arts, bowling and roller sports might be good additions too. Rugby and golf are being added. By merging judo and taekwondo into a catagory called martial arts, they create an opening and can add MMA, wushu and karate under the heading by calling them 'Disciplines'. Lose sailing, synchronized swimming and the equestrian events and you now have everything aside say bowling and climbing. By calling some sports 'disciplines' the Olympics would gain golf, rugby (already added), baseball, softball, roller sports, squash, cricket, karate, wushu, MMA and only lose sailing, equestrian and synchcronized swinming

I'd love to see more sports...but it's all about the dollar.
Ehh Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Wrestling should never have been removed. It's been around for ages and when you have other sports like Squash, that horseback riding s*** and speed walking you got problems
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I doubt the major leaguee players would play anyway. Hockey is the only sport that stops there season for the olympics and they would prefer not to do it. Both Wrestling and Baseball should be apart of the olympics. I still don't understand how synchronised swimming is a sport. The Major League players were never a part of it but lots of future stars played in them before they were major leaguers , Roy Oswalt, Dice-K, R.A. Dickey, Troy Glaus, Alexei Ramirez, Stephen Strasburg, Dexter Fowler and that's just since it's been official. The USA teams of the eighties thwhen it was a demonstration team were stacked especially the 1984 team had Will Clark, Mark McGwire and Barry Larkin. It's not a huge loss especially now that there's the WBC but it's certainly a shame for Japan where it would have been popular.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 Didn't Brett Lawrie play in the olympics?
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 As long as that ribbon twirler thingy is in the games, i could care less about everything.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Didn't Brett Lawrie play in the olympics? Yeah that's right. He was still a catcher back then.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Even as a baseball fan I'd prefer to see wrestling. Baseball in the Olympics doesn't really matter a whole lot to me.

KSaw Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I'd like to see lacrosse, but apparently that won't happen till 2024. With the exception of Africa it is played in many countries, in every other continent around the world. It would be a good addition.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 There's no way in hell the 2020 Olympics are actually going to be held in Tokyo, and I'm not even trying to sound dramatic. Some experts are actually seriously mooting the possibility of a large swathe of Honshu being permanently evacuated (!!) long before then. f***ed up s***, mang. I was laughing my ass off when I heard that the IOC actually awarded the thing to Tokyo, I mean, was Pripyat unavailable or something? Actually, by 2020 Pripyat would probably be preferable.
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I love the WBC so much that I don't really care about this. MLB is never (and shouldn't) going to take an Olympic break, and you'd probably have spotty participation among Minor Leaguers. I'd break the sports up and put softball in though. Personally I can't stand the WBC. The best players don't go. The US team is a joke each time and they simply don't play enough games. Give me a WBC where 3 teams qualify and along with the US (host and country with the most MLB players), play a 4-team tourney during a 7-day all-star break. Every 4 years skip the all-star game and add 4 days to the break.

WBC isn't perfect but it's still by far the best International tournament baseball has ever had.

Heck, the Olympic hockey tourney isn't very good either. More games!

WBC isn't perfect but it's still by far the best International tournament baseball has ever had. The best baseball tournaments are really the Little League World Series, The College World Series and the World Junior Championships. Really, with baseball, a double round robin followed by a playoff at least gives a sample size and doesn't allow one pitcher to steal it all.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 Heck, the Olympic hockey tourney isn't very good either. ban
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 ban It really isn't. Any tournament that only guarantees teams 3 games is very flawed. And then you're into elimination games. Not to mention they have shoot outs deciding elimination games. How about you seed the top 7 hockey nations and have 8-12 play to grab the 8th spot beginning day 1 of the Olympics. Then you have all 8 remaining teams play a round robin- 7 games each. First plays second for gold and 3rd plays 4th for bronze. No shoot outs in any of the games. Round robin games could have 1 overtime period and then end in a tie. Medal games would play to a winner like NHL playoffs. Now that would be a tourney!
KSaw Verified Member Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Current World Rankings: 1. Russia 2. Slovakia 3. Czech Republic 4. Finland 5. Canada 6. Sweden 7. USA 8. Norway 9. France 10. Latvia 11. Switzerland 12. Germany Those are the Olympic hockey nations for 2014.
