G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 "But the health issues have continued at alarming rate this year – 20 different players have needed 24 DL stints (tied for second in the majors) for a total of 1,102 games lost (third in the big-leagues) – and simply dismissing that as a fluke is no longer an option. One thing the Blue Jays are kicking around is creating a medical director type of position to oversee the way everything from strength and conditioning to daily maintenance is handled, and it’s an idea with some merit."
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Even if there is *likely* no systemic injury problem and the "medical director" would *probably* have no real effect, it's still worth throwing 100k or whatever at the issue with this type of extra suit. There's nothing wrong with being a more robust org and covering some more bases, even if you're only throwing money at an off-chance. It would be a chump change investment in the large scheme of things. Tepid thumbs up from njh.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 28, 2013 Author Posted August 28, 2013 Agree NJH But they should also probably rebuild Brandon Morrow with titanium in every moving body part.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Oh good, the injuries excuse again.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 While it's great that they're apparently going to try to remedy the injury situation, lol at the excuses with this organisation. Honestly, it wasn't the injuries that caused this team to fall into the basement of the division - it was that the team just isn't good enough. Even with complete health (which wouldn't happen anyway), this was an 80-85 win roster at best. Are the injuries a cause for concern, though? Yes.
Errorcebia Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Meh, there are healthy players that are also hurting the team's chances. JP has seldom been injured.

A couple million dollars to fund the position, new employees, researching the issues and then implementing solutions would go a long way IMO. A complete overhaul in the way this org thinks about strength and conditioning is necessary. I'm also of the belief that in regards to injury prevention baseball, and specifically the Blue Jays, do a lot of things backwards. Build arm strength, stop babying pitchers and get these guys on better off-season routines.
Nox Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 (edited) Knowing this org, they'll toss $45K a year at some guy with a BA from a s***** JC in western Ohio and get him to run some bottom of the barrel "research". But don't worry, said hire will have made the s***** baseball team at the s***** JC, making 37 career relief appearances as a loogy topping out at 79 while carrying with him a real good feel for the game. #IBYNEPB Edited August 28, 2013 by Nox
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Hopefully they hire more than just one person as they will not have enough expertise alone. It could take a whole consulting firm worth of knowledge and talent to actually move the needle.

Think you can convert them to the 20-80 scale and fax me a hardcopy?"
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Ya, they need to find a way to strengthen the arm and build innings without putting inane amounts of abuse on the elbow/shoulder. The Jamie Evans' weighted ball program definitely seems like a good start.
