gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Should bring the old OPS back up over 0.500. Cmon already. If somebody here was ripping on a player with 24 PA, you'd be ripping him a new *******. Give it a rest.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I was responding to the idea that he's had improved results. He really hasn't. Stastistically you are correct, but that doesn't mean he hasn't made progress in his approach, hence the SSS. He has been going deeper in counts than his norm and has had a bid of bad luck on his BABIP. If he only hits. 240 combined with increasing the amount of pitches he sees per AB, that's still a positive. Let's give it some more time to see if Seitzer can help the kid improve his results.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I will say ST is too small a sample to judge anything. But we do have a large enough sample in the minors. Yea yea yea, chances are he's a bum, waste of space... We know all that, old news. People should focus on what's been going own SINCE Kevin Seitzer been working with him in the offseason, not what he did prior. The only question that you guys should ask and try to answer is, whether or not there is a positive change in his approach, and if so, what are the chances that this change in approach will stick?
flafson Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 So ignore 5 MiLB seasons in favour of ST PA's because he got a new hitting coach? I'm not ignoring it, i'm saying he wasn't so great before, can he get better now? And besides, he wasn't horrible in the minors, just not enough to justify a call up.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I will say ST is too small a sample to judge anything. But we do have a large enough sample in the minors. Things can change. Atmosphere, coaching or just simply his light bulb may turn on. There is also a strong possibility that he may never figure it out offensively, but with the type of defense he brings, it's worth a shot trying to find out.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 You're better off just waiting to see what the numbers say. Your own bias is going to cloud your judgment when you start talking about a player you like adopting a new approach under a new hitting coach. The best thing to do is to wait and see what happens. If he has improved the numbers will tell that story when they start to stabilize. I 100% agree.

bzapple Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Oh yeah, this is still happening. God this team is a trainwreck.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Drew is looking better and better
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Don't forget about our amazing depth, Chris Getz, Jon Diaz and Kawasaki! Stop despairing us LOL I'd really like to get Drew and have Kawasaki on the bench Izturis dumped Goins in AAA Odds of this happening <1 in 1,000

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 At least we have Maicer Izturis on the team in case this continues. Am I the only one who thinks that Izturis could actually turn it around and provide 1 WAR or so this season? Goins will inevitably be replaced; hopefully it's by Stephen Drew. If not, we kind of have to bank on Izturis, and I say there's no way he's that bad again.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I don't know how much it's worth but i think Goins will prove you all wrong. I'm willing to bet $20 on that.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 So your saying there is a chance LOL yes What show/movie is that from?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Dumb and Dumber! Of course. I just watched it a few weeks ago. LOL
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I was ok with the Izturis signing at the time, but the guy looks finished. He just doesn't hit the ball very hard anymore - watching him slap the ball last year I don't think it's an accident that his ISO has dropped significantly and rendered him useless. Guy is 34 in August. I think he's just done. You may be right. Perhaps it's just a little pre-season optimism sneaking up on me. I want to think Izturis can rebound, but he did look dreadful last season. Anyways, I will hope.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 If Goins is really bad offensively after a few months, AA has to entertain trade possibilities for Franklin ( if he is still available ). There is no chance AA signs Drew, none.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Update Goins this spring 13games, 38ab 158/222/158 avg/obp/slg .377 OPS 13 games, LOL. Knee jerk much?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 13 games, LOL. Knee jerk much? Sure it's a small sample size but he also has a very large sample size of being a not good hitter so the burden of proof is on Goins to show something, to show that this Seitzer thing has made a difference. Otherwise, the only reasonable assumption is that he's the same crappy hitter he's always been and neither Seitzer nor anyone else is going to change that.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 It would be just like this team to give Goins "a few months" to realize he can't hack it with the bat Yeah, giving a situation the proper amount of time for results to be accurate would be something totally illogical. By your accounts, Goins can currently have back to back 3 for 4 games with a few doubles mixed in and suddenly transform to himself to the top of the statistical heap.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I bet you would be fapping your dick off if it was 13 Games and he was hitting .300+ Yeah ok kid.

I totally agree, but 13 spring games is no indication of anything yet.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 for the love of god trade a bag of balls to MIL for Rickie Weeks. Its a one year gamble and he's looked good so far this spring. 3 WAR upside.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I totally agree, but 13 spring games is no indication of anything yet. Are 2286 professional plate appearances also not an indication of anything?
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Are 2286 professional plate appearances also not an indication of anything? Other than last year, his minor league stats aren't that bad, so i don't know wtf you are talking about. Also the situation could be different this year with Seitzer. I'm not saying he will succeed, but he has to be given a few months. The only reason he's getting a shot is because of the shut down defense he brings and AA's unwillingness to spend on an upgrade. Just sit back and let it play out.
