The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Just like the starting pitching. Exactly. If you throw enough different kinds of crap at the wall eventually you'll find some kind that sticks.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I like Andy Burns. Agreed here. Can he handle short and/or second?? Holy crap. I just looked at Andy Burns fangraphs page and noticed the Oliver 5 year projections. I didn't know these existed. I guess for players with mlb time there is a lot of other crap on the page so you have to scroll way down to find these. So of course I looked at Ryan Goins... and his best season is projected for next year. Then he starts dropping. So it looks like they have players peaking at 24/25 then holding steading for 3 years or so. Then bam... decline. I looked at Bautista, Reyes, EE. Not pretty. And this assumes 600 plate appearances. Which won't happen obviously. But if the injuries increase as they age... a reasonable assumption. This is an absolute disaster by 2016 if not sooner.

I just looked at Andy Burns fangraphs page and noticed the Oliver 5 year projections. A.) Yes, I believe he can. B.) Don't use those. There's so much that can happen in 5 years and Oliver is just icky.
Convo Verified Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 How old might Andy Burns be when he's MLB ready? 24-25-26?

I'm pretty sure he's not a good defensive 2B hence the move to 3B. Shortstop seems like a stretch but if anyone has an actual scouting report that would be helpful because I'm just going on memory here.

theblujay Verified Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Nah But I thought Goins was AAA filler...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I'm in if BTS isn't but not for an avatar bet cause dumn
theblujay Verified Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I'm in if BTS isn't but not for an avatar bet cause dumn Its for fun, I'm not betting money
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Its for fun, I'm not betting money I realize. ToS-abiding signature choice for a set amount of time equivalent to Goins' batting average *100? So, if he hits .190, which he will, that would be 19 days.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Good Lord. ?? I'm not sure how to take this. I was merely commenting on the 5 year projections. Not sure what the "good lord" is for. As you perhaps know (or perhaps not) these type of projections are based on the accumalitve history of major league baseball and some math. They reflect how the average player will age. They aren't that good for one player. However over groups of players they are pretty useful. Each system has their own biases. This system shows an extreme crash of the Toronto Blue Jays. Which is not a huge secret. Most posters have been extremely worried about the future of the franchise. Building around 30 somethings is not that smart. Anyway these systems are useful tools to get an idea of what the future holds. Like anything they each have their biases so taking a look at multiple systems is useful,. If you are against this you are against math, history, and logic. Which is fine. A lot of people are against these things. The interesting thing is for the purposes of this discussion is that if you squint the data actually gives a glimmer of hope for Ryan Goins near term. Goins is a fringy player. But will be at his peak the next 2 years.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Find out what the lotto numbers will be for tomorrow night and then this drivel will have relevance.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Lol.. You in on the Goins O/U 1 WAR or what? The one theblujay was talking about with the avatar bet?
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 The one theblujay was talking about with the avatar bet? We don't have to bet avatars, maybe something else. Pride is good enough for me. Board status is on the line i would think.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 We don't have to bet avatars, maybe something else. Pride is good enough for me. Board status is on the line i would think. "Board status" lol Bragging rights is good enough for me though
flafson Verified Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Wow, shocker. I had to make it official
theblujay Verified Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 "Board status" lol Bragging rights is good enough for me though Let's take this to the bets thread
flafson Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Lol. Nothing against him personally, I actually think it's unfair for him to be tossed into the fire like this but I hope he fails miserably and I think he will so these *******s wake up and stop being so arrogant to try and pull off such a f***ing sham that is Ryan Goins. Again nothing against Ryan personally. Nothing personal but you want him to fail? Common...
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Potential .300 batting average guy according to Seltzer... If Goins hits .300 once in his career, I'll eat my shoe
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Nothing personal but you want him to fail? Common... Er, nothing wrong with that. He's a fan of the team above Goins. It's very justifiable.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 QUOTE=flafson;205540]Nothing personal but you want him to fail? Common... No it's not personal. He did no wrong. He did not hype himself up. He did not put himself even in a position to play in the MLB. It was desperate situation at 2b and he got most of his hits out of the way on his first 50 at bats. Hit really poorly down the stretch. He's just orginization filler and shouldn't even be worthy of a discussion of this magnitude. Maybe so but to say you want him to fail miserably and saying it's not personal doesn't go well together. Sounds like you want the team to fail so some heads in the FO will roll.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Roll or wake up. It's 1am, why would i roll or wake up? Should have said go to sleep.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 It's 1am, why would i roll or wake up? Should have said go to sleep. He's talking about the heads in the FO, not you. Do I have to translate this entire conversation for you? Lol maybe some sleep is needed
