theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Omar Infante, Jhonny Peralta, Howie Kendrick, Daniel Murphy, Mark Ellis, maybe even Bryan Roberts. All better than Goins. They're all good, but what's it gonna cost and are we willing to give it up?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Fair enough, haha. I'm just saying he's not Ryan god damn Goins. My #1 option for next year is probably Peralta (thanks to NJH for the idea). There's always moving Reyes over and signing Brendan Ryan. Ooh, Starlin Castro could be a cat bounce target. I would love Ryan as a part time guy, certainly not as an everyday option. Castro shouldn't be considered a "dead bounce" at this point in his career, and I doubt the Cubs would either.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Oh and I forgot to mention Danny Esponisa could be a buy low target. Probably better than Goins. I would love Ryan as a part time guy, certainly not as an everyday option. Castro shouldn't be considered a "dead bounce" at this point in his career, and I doubt the Cubs would either. I said cat bounce as in he could be a bounce back target. He's not done, just having an off year lol
Caper Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 Second base has just sucked so bad this year... That even if he is a scrub... He looks like an Allstar out there by comparison.
Smokey Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Second base has just sucked so bad this year... That even if he is a scrub... He looks like an Allstar out there by comparison. A scrub should never look like an all-star unless you're completely lacking perspective.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 No one is calling for a stud, we'd just like someone who isn't god damn replacement level At this rate, we will end up with below replacement level like this year...
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 A scrub should never look like an all-star unless you're completely lacking perspective. Well I guess the debate is settled then since he's looked like a scrub so far.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 -0.9 wRAA At least it's looking less likely he'll be 2B next year
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 AA was in on Kendrick at the trade deadline. That would be nice. I'd like to see Howie Kendrick or Marco Scutaro as targets for second base. Finding an above average second baseman who can hit and field should be the No. 1 priority.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 What's our equivalent of Zach Lee? Stroman? That's what it's gonna take for Kendrick, unfortunately.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd give up Stroman if we are getting Kendrick back I would too, I just like Stro so it'd suck. Gotta give to get though. Wonder if Nolin would interest them.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd rather have Goins start at 2B than give up Stroman for Kendrick
Caper Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 I would too, I just like Stro so it'd suck. Gotta give to get though. Wonder if Nolin would interest them. The Angels pitching is a disaster, so they need to do something like that. If I were them I'd do it for Stroman and Goins.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd rather have Goins start at 2B than give up Stroman for Kendrick Lol The Angels pitching is a disaster, so they need to do something like that. If I were them I'd do it for Stroman and Goins. Agreed.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd rather have Goins start at 2B than give up Stroman for Kendrick Maybe. With Izturis still available (and almost certain to be better next year after an off year) I can deal with not upgrading at 2B. It's catcher and a #1 or 2 caliber starter that we need. That's enough to ask for.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Too funny of a screen cap not to post. Sorry Goins, you're having a great game. And as Buck and Tabby are talking about it, here's what the TV is showing.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Are you sure? That's pretty bad IMO. 3 replacement level scrubs. Again, I can live with one of them playing second if we pick up a catcher and a 1/2 level starter. You don't need an all star at every position and has been said 100 times, the market for 2B outside of the unaffordable Cano is terrible.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Once again, there's a pronounced difference between not being an all star and being replacement level. As BTS stated, receiving replacement level production from anywhere but maybe a reliever is devastating.

What you do need is to not have s***** players. A big problem with the Jays this year was that their s***** players canceled out their good players. This article written by Drew Fairservice of Getting Blanked back in August shows how some teams can succeed without stars by merely not having any s***** players and how teams like the Jays sunk themselves by having way too many of them. http://blogs.thescore.com/mlb/2013/08/06/great-players-average-players-bad-players-it-takes-all-kinds/
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I really think Goins would be replacement at the very worst. I could see him putting up 1-2 WAR.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I really think Goins would be replacement at the very worst. I could see him putting up 1-2 WAR. You do realize how insane this is?
flafson Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Unless we are getting a Cano like, i have no problem sticking with Goins just for his fielding. I won't say the same about the outfield though, AA should market Sierra like he's the next Bautista IMO, it might work.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Da fuq did I just read That's no different than what we been talking about for a while now. Unless you mean Sierra but i doubt you do.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 You know what's scary? Being aware of WAR and replacement-level likely makes theblujay more informed than almost everyone in the Jays front office. Not that that's saying much. AA should market Sierra like he's the next Bautista IMO, it might work. http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/549/306/165.gif
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Unless you mean Sierra but i doubt you do. he definitely meant Sierra probably not one of your finer moments
flafson Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 he definitely meant Sierra probably not one of your finer moments Haha, i guess not. Sierra IMO shows talent and potential but lacks some serious fundamentals. With some decent September numbers maybe AA can get something for him.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 ITT: Goins = 5 win defender Goins = replacement level floor Goins for starter Sierra should be marketed as the next Bautista Other s*** I'm missing Wow.
