JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 How did I make this thread go to s***? Do I really need to explain it again? Instead of engaging in discussion, you posted old stuff so people would talk about something else. You got your wish. This thread is garbage now
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Did you read all of the thread I posted to you It gets good near the end, IIRC I'm still reading it. Porcello? True, there's another one. Can we just banish these idiots to the Cards board? I should really go back there and see how that Rasmus thread is doing. Dude, your lost don't try to understand. FIP doesn't take into account many real things in baseball, like hits and runs. HITS AND RUNS. You win by getting RUNS. A HOME RUN IS A RUN GIVEN UP. AT LEAST ONE. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE BRO.
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 It's fielding independent pitching though, it measures pitcher effectiveness by looking at the variables they can control... Hits and runs are controlled by team performance. That's exactly why its useless. A pitcher is never going to be pitching without a team behind him. Whatever, you guys are lost in SABR fantasy land. Come back to reality and watch the game.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 No, I warned people of not engaging in discussion with you, because you are a lousy troll. It didn't work It's actually kind of fun, lol. Adds some spice to a boring day in Blue Jays land
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 No, I warned people of not engaging in discussion with you, because you are a lousy troll. It didn't work What? I really have no clue what you're trying to do here. If anyone's the troll its you, just look at the Bautista trade thread. All you need there
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 You win by getting RUNS. You win by scoring more RUNS than you prevent. There are stats that look at how those runs scored and prevented and there are counting stats, like hits and runs, that tally the events. Both have uses, it's not one or the other.
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I didn't make a Bautista trade thread you f***ing idiot http://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/...05-PM-ET/page5
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I'm still reading it. A HOME RUN IS A RUN GIVEN UP. AT LEAST ONE. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE BRO. FIP doesn't care about hits or runs. You guys put everything into numbers. THIS IS A REAL GAME. Sometimes there's more to it than fancy numbers that take all the human element out of it. Go look at JJs numbers, then watch some highlights.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 I didn't make a Bautista trade thread you f***ing idiot You posted some Ken Rosnethal tweet or something idek

GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 true but simply the fact is he gave up no runs and that is all I care about...at least it was 3 walks and not hits and that is the reason there were no runs given up...the pitcher was likely being cautious and trying not to throw down the middle which should be taken into account... But if he has even a slightly worse team, or the ball is hit slightly differently or some other physics ******** and it's not a triple play, or some other s*** the pitcher doesn't control, he has a bad inning. Why should he be credited there?
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 You win by scoring more RUNS than you prevent. There are stats that look at how those runs scored and prevented and there are counting stats, like hits and runs, that tally the events. Both have uses, it's not one or the other. The majority of people on here seem to live by the first category and completely forget the second. They just predict, and predict and predict until they come up with a new more intense stat to predict for them. And lost in all of this is the actual game and the fact that anything can happen.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 This is fun. I always like arguing with the SABR nerds. come at me brah
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 URL doesn't work "@Ken_Rosenthal 5m Source: Bautista about to be traded to #Rangers. Profar in discussion coming back #Jays" Posted by some guy named King
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 FIP doesn't care about hits or runs. You guys put everything into numbers. THIS IS A REAL GAME. Sometimes there's more to it than fancy numbers that take all the human element out of it. Go look at JJs numbers, then watch some highlights. JJ has performed poorly and the results reflect that. These advanced stats aren't saying that JJ has been good, simply that he is due to regress towards the mean going forward. FIP isn't like wRC+.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 That doesn't even make me a troll. It would be different if it was the trade deadline or something, like Bautista is actually going to be traded for Profar in August. That would never happen in the next million years To be fair, you were trolling, but that doesn't make you a troll
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 WALKS ARE OVER RATED HURRRRRRRRRRR DUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRr Yup, back to this. It's like clockwork with you, it really is
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 So you're saying ERA is bad because of luck, but you add in hits (luck driven by BABIP) and now it weens out luck? Ok I can't if I'm trolling right now, but groundball rates and fly outs are luck because the hitter still has to swing the bat at the right time and location. And the pitcher has nothing to do with that. It's like when a pitcher throws it right down the plate, and the hitter fouls it straight back. LUCK! But a hit is a hit. Sometimes I feel like baseball players should be injected with a computer scouting report chip, and they just instinctively know the perfect place to field, hit and pitch at all times. And then luck wouldn't be a factor.
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 But if he has even a slightly worse team, or the ball is hit slightly differently or some other physics ******** and it's not a triple play, or some other s*** the pitcher doesn't control, he has a bad inning. Why should he be credited there? What if he had a better catcher who framed the pitches and one of the walks didn't happen? There are endless possibilities and numbers will never be able to completely predict everything. Why don't you go plug numbers into a simulator, thats what you want right? Everything to obey the numbers? Why even play the game? Just look at the ZIPS projections for WAR and give those teams playoff berths.
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 To be fair, you were trolling, but that doesn't make you a troll No True Scotsman...

It's been such a terrible year on the diamond. This team has been so disappointing and frustrating to watch. Projections give hope.
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Yes anything can happen, so why put that randomness into the pitcher's stats? Because that randomness is always there. This is the point I'm trying to make.
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 This is just meaningless drivel. You responding that everyone's posts suck is the only drivel I see. Respond with some ideas of your own if he's so wrong
theblujay Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 This is just meaningless drivel. Do you have anything to say about the debate? Or just dismissing what I'm saying because it doesn't fit the hivemind?

Well, I think you're right, and this is something I love thinking about, but I don't think we really need to get that deep lol. We're in so deep I see Adelle .-. What if he had a better catcher who framed the pitches and one of the walks didn't happen? There are endless possibilities and numbers will never be able to completely predict everything. Why don't you go plug numbers into a simulator, thats what you want right? Everything to obey the numbers? Why even play the game? It was a joke Oh. That's what I get for skimming lol
JSFIP Verified Member Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Read the previous part of the thread, several people were saying "OMG WE GOT PROFAR!!!" It was a joke Sure... Then why was the first response "Ban"? Just like the first response (by you, by the way) to my old thread, which according to you is the worst thing in existence.

There's so little separating a swinging strike from a hit that numbers will never be able to 100% predict it.
