ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 It doesn't make sense to lump in Woj with these other guys. They moved Woj in a huge package for Happ. That's giving up on a guy. They traded Synd/Desc/Nicolino in packages to land a starting SS and the top 3 of the rotation. That's cashing in your chips. Equally foolish perhaps but they're hardly the same thing. I was referring to Syndergaard and Nicolino more than anyone else. I was also pointing out that it wasn't a matter of player development because some seem to be implying that Syndergaard was struggling in the Blue Jays' system, went to the Mets and developed into this great prospect, I just don't think the facts support this theory. I do agree with your comment, the reason most of these guys and others were traded was not because the organization was giving up on them.

Guys who make the jump to AA successfully deserve to a boost in prospect ranking because it's such a big step but it's not like they couldn't have made that jump in the Jays system. It's not like they all had a sudden turnaround either. Nicolino was actually much less effective, Syndergaard was awesome but he was nearly as awesome before, Woj looks better now but he's still not a good as was hoped when he was drafted, Desclafani took probably the biggest step going from being an older prospect who was not dominating younger competition to a guy putting much more impressive AA numbers.

I get that, that's why I said I agreed with your comment. And again, I agree with this comment. I get that a lot of people are frustrated with the Jays' inability to draft/develop their own good players over the last while, but the system was doing well, including some of the guys that were traded. The organization, for whatever reason, just decided it would change course and use them to get players for now. I'd see their point if Thames, Snider, Nestor Molina and others had shown significant improvements elsewhere. I can see people being pissed at emptying the farm, like I was/am, but it seems to be self-contradictory to complain about trading away most of your top prospects and then saying the franchise can't draft/develop.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 It's pretty clear to me we do an ok job at drafting people but we are terrible at developing and evaluating people. I have been saying this for a couple of years now . We need to rob the Cards ORG, and the Rays of their farm development people . Many on this board agree with that . AA is too loyal to his farm development personal
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Not looking good with that win last nite for getting a top 10 pick . We really need to lose the next two games

We really need to lose the next two games I agree JAYS can't even lose right. They better not mess this up. If they lose both they will be get a top 10 for sure as Mets/Brewers are playing each other.

He sure is the weakest link on that team. Imagine if they'd hung on to Shields for another year. What a rotation that would have been. But they probably traded him at the right time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) How humiliating is it that the Jays bumped the payroll to 120MM (9th highest in baseball), got all these veteran guys and we're looking at a potential bottom 10 finish. Meanwhile Oakland wins the division with a payroll under 60MM and Cleveland may well make the playoffs. It's maddening as a Jays fan. Edited September 28, 2013 by G-Snarls

Not sure on how the draft turns out quality wise between 8 and 12 and I doubt we go for any FA,s that cost us a pick but the $$$ amt we can spend in the draft and internationally does matter .
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 The Blue Jays now sit with the 9th pick with 2 games remaining. Our draft window is now between 7-12 (including our comp pick at 11 which I wasn't always including before). The Giants recent streak has put them out of the hunt for top 10. Likewise the Mariners, and the 6th pick they hold, are now beyond our reach. The Rockies 'magic number' is 1 game. Any combination of a Blue Jays win or Rockies loss will make the 7th pick impossible for the Jays. The Jays are in a three way tie for the last 2 'top 10' spots. They also win the 'tie breaker' with both the Brewers and Mets. If either of those teams win out the season, we are guaranteed a top 10 pick. Conversely, a Jay's loss coupled with a win by either team also guarantees us a top 10 pick. Lets go tank nation!
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Holy s*** today was not a good day to win. How is everyone else doing? This blows.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 It just donned on me that the Mets and Brewers (who we are currently tied with in the standings ) are playing each other for their final games of the season. If we consider a win today as likely. That puts us in a tough spot. If the Mets/Brews split their final two games they will each end up with a record of 74 - 88. If we win today and tomorrow they will BOTH leap us in the standings. The nice thing about it is that if either team wins the final two, or we lose tomorrow, we are guaranteed a top 10 pick.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Holy s*** please just LOSE TOMORROW.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Holy s*** please just LOSE TOMORROW. What a useless theory, tanking is for losers. You have a terrible negative attitude. What I see is a lot of young Jays players are not nearly the busts that many of you think they are on here, and at a minimum we have more depth then most on here seem to think.

Really need to lose tomorrow. Best case scenario Jays lose and Mets win then I believe the JAYS would draft 9th.

Would love them to both win.

That puts us out of the top 10 I think or tied with Milwaukee.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 With mets playing brewers, doesn't this guarantee the worst we can finish is 10th...one of those guys wins tomorrow and if we win then were still good???? What am I missing?
SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Ohhhhhhhh nevermind, mlbtraderumors hasn't updated standings yet.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 I really don't think we need a protected pick as AA hasn't signed a top FA yet and I expect that trend to continue . On the other hand each slot back costs us draft money plus international spending money . Wining these games has cost us prospects
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 Well here we are at the last game of the season. The draft window sits at 8 - 11. The Jays could really REALLY use a lose. Best case scenario; Jays, and Brewers Lose, Mets, and Phillies win. This has us drafting 8th Worst case scenario; Brewers Lose, Jays win. That has us drafting 11th, outside the top 10. If the Jays lose the worst we can finish is 10th. If we sweep the damn Rays to finish the year... mother of god.
