I'd much prefer to sign/trade for a veteran than rely on Jimenez.

To be honest I've been shocked all year by the hype good posters are giving guys like Jiminez and Pillar. Jiminez will max out as a backup C and Pillar as a 4th OF. They aren't even really relevant.

It doesn't seem like he'll walk at a MLB average pace. He is looking like a longshot for 15HR, even with the SB that isn't very good for a LF'er. He has a chance to be an average MLB player, same with Jimenez.

Yeah, I'm well aware of his numbers. Like I said, I don't think it will translate. He's been old for every level, doesn't walk, and doesn't hit for power.

Pillar has a legit hit tool. Probably ends up as a fourth outfielder. But what's wrong with that we could use a guy who can flat out hit a baseball and play all 3 outfield positions defensively. That's a nice asset to have. And an asset we haven't had since they let Reed Johnson go. As for A.J. Jimenez excellent defensive catcher. That's what your looking for. Our current catcher is horrendous so its a massive upgrade already. If he hits for power that's really a bonus hes shown the ability to hit and he runs well. I'm not going to expect anything major for them. But I'm looking forward to watching them both play.

 

You will cry and asking for the return of JP when Jimenez this below .200 with no homers and 20 GIDP.

IMO their chances at being average are very very low. I'd definitely bet the under for 2 fWAR at their peak.

 

I could see them both straddling 2 WAR for a few years. However, those expectations are significantly higher than their statistically most probable outcome.

Yup. You can't just start a C who can't hit and say it will be an improvement because JPA couldn't catch. Go get a f***ing catcher.

 

Even if Jimenez pans out he's 2-3 years away from being a legitimate option. McCann, Ruiz, Lucroy, etc are all potentially available at the deadline or in FA. It would do the Jays, and AA, a lot of good to solidify the backstop. Easiest improvement to make to this team IMO.

Oh definitely. It certainly isn't a zero probabilty that they hit that, bit its definitely above their mean projection.

 

If Pillar can play a decent CF he could hit .280/.320/.420 with +30SB. That's not an elite player but definitely of value up the middle.

All of that is extremely unlikely to happen. If hes hitting below .200 he probably wouldn't get the opportunity to ground into 20 DP's. Anyone can hit a homerun at Rogers Centre... Kawasaki proved that. And I will never cry for the return of J.P.

He just might be useful hitting over .320 (~5% walk rate)

As long as some guy isn't J.P. I'm down. Perhaps Arenciba can play only at home though. He hits like over .280 at home and under .200 on the road.

 

We need real catcher, Jimenez will be the backup.

Jimenez will probably never be a starter at the major league level but if he can continue to be this good defensively then he works well as a bench piece. Jimenez is an interested piece in my mind, he's played his first four professional seasons (08-12) with a torn UCL, this is the first year he's actually been healthy. If the mechanical changes to his swing stick and allow him to get the bat to the zone faster he may actually develop a hit tool enough to be a starting catcher. If his career 41% thrown out rate (with a torn UCL) translates to the bigs with his other defensive skill set you can live with a weaker bat.

Yeah in the article he said this is the first time he's ever felt 100% physically. I'm pretty optimistic about both him and Pillar, but I guess I'm pretty optimistic about almost all of our prospects.
