Haha. I actually reported it 7 hours before he pitched and reported here, on FB and in Twitter and it got re-reported a fair bit. I had the advantage of knowing that they had borded a plane to San Diego from Pearson around noon. It was on a day when the Padres were on the road at Miami and with the kid pitching in Tijuana the same evening. It was simply too logical and obvious as to where they were going and why.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez Could Sign Next Week

 

The market is taking shape for Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and the right-hander could sign with a club as early as next week, an industry source tells MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. While teams are working the phones vigorously to land an impact pitcher before the July 31st deadline, Gonzalez could provide a boost to a contender without giving up anything other than money. Scouts believe Gonzalez needs only a few starts in the minors before making his MLB debut and his addition could move the needle as much as finding an arm via trade.

 

The Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, and Red Sox are among the clubs that have expressed serious interest in signing the 26-year-old hurler while the Phillies, Blue Jays, and Braves are also in the hunt. Gonzalez, who was cleared to sign with an MLB team earlier this week, could get as much as $60MM over five years.

Cuban Pitcher Misael Siverio Defects

 

Another Cuban pitcher is attempting to make the leap to Major League Baseball. Misael Siverio, a 24-year-old lefty, was in Des Moines, Iowa Tuesday in advance of exhibition games against United States colleges, and he left the team hotel to pursue the Major League dream, according to Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald.

 

"It is not easy leaving behind what is yours, but after a giving it a lot of thought I made this decision for my future and for my family. My dream, of course, is to make the Major Leagues, and starting today I will start doing what I need to do to accomplish that," Siverio told Ebro in Spanish.

 

Given his age, it appears Siverio will not be subject to the international signing restrictions established in the collective barganing agreement. He also has to have played a minimum of three professional seasons in a Cuban professional league, which seems likely. Most Cuban defectors establish residency in countries other than the U.S., to avoid being subject to MLB's amateur draft. So while Siverio defected in Iowa, we'll have to see if he will be headed back out of the country in the name of being declared an MLB free agent.

There are a bevy of teams interested in the hurler, but it sounds like the los angeles dodgers may be preparing for a yasiel puig-ish move to take gonzalez off the market. Peter gammons of mlb.com reports that the dodgers will reportedly go five years and close to $50 million on gonzalez.

Indians near deal with RHP Leando Linares of Cuba

 

The Indians are closing in on a deal with Cuban teenage right-hander Leando Linares Gonzalez worth an estimated $1 million, according to an industry source.

 

Linares, 19, pitched for the Cuban National Team 16-and-under squad in competitions in Chinese Taipei in 2009 and Lagos de Moreno, Mexico in 2010. The 6-ft-3, 205-pound pitcher made a name for himself on the island by starring for Villa Clara in the 16-and-under and 18-and-under divisions in the National Championships in Cuba from 2009 to 2012.

 

Because he is not at least 23 years old and has not played at least three seasons in a Cuban professional league, Linares Gonzalez is subject to the new international signing guidelines established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

The Indians have signed four players, including shortstop Willy Castro who signed for $850,000, for a total close to $1.4 million since the international signing period began on July 2nd. Cleveland entered the international signing period with a bonus pool of $3,636,900.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that the Dodgers are not pursuing Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.

The Dodgers have been considered one of the favorites to sign Gonzalez, with one general manager recently telling Peter Gammons of MLB.com that the club could be willing to go to five years and $50 million, but it appears that they have backed out of the running. The Braves, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Phillies, Blue Jays, Twins, and Marlins are among the other teams who have reportedly shown interest in the 26-year-old right-hander. It's believe that he could sign somewhere as soon as this week.
