  1. 1. Which Deal Would You Make?

    • Scott Feldman, Cubs (C prospect and a minor leaguer with upside)
    • Matt Garza, Cubs (2 C prospects and a throw in)
    • Bud Norris, Astros (B and C prospect and a throw in)
    • Jake Peavy 1, White Sox (Take on contract and deal 2 C prospects)
    • Jake Peavy 2, White Sox (Have Sox eat millions and deal a top prospect and a B-C prospect)

Peavy is the guy. One of my favourite players too :)

I dunno what it is, but there's something super likable about the guy.

I don't think the trade scenarios are realistic. Garza, given his name especially , probably costs a B+ guy at least. Helps he's given up 2 ER in last 22IP with 23k/5bb. Garza isn't too far from an A.Sanchez, who commanded that

There are plenty of teams that will also probably be willing to take on Peavy's contract AND give up a quality prospect+

Re: Peavy

The Chicago media disagree with you. The general take is that they need him to return from the cracked rib quickly so they can get a decent prospect by eating some salary or a few ok ones by dumping the salary. He isn't cheap and that option year is hefty for the age he'll be.

Guy guys... peavy is a good pitcher but... Lee or bust™

I would not be displeased with $60M/5 years for this guy. AA has been the runner up in a few too many of these for my tastes. Consider that AJ Burnett got $55M from JPR 7 years ago when he was 29.

Gonna try to find out how many scouts are going with him. The Red Sox had 8 scouts-- 8 at his last game.

I would do that.

I feel like a lot of these names are pipe dreams. We have $135 million committed for next year, not counting JJ, and the only prospects left in the system that have real value are Stroman, Osuna, Gose, and Sanchez.

This was my concern with the Peavy deal, but I would argue Jimenez has some value, regardless of his SSS this year.

I think that you believe that only elite prospects or As and Bs have value. C prospects are highly valued. Out top 19 preseason were C+ or better.

Garza as a pure rental who wouldn't have gotten a qualifying offer from the Cubs won't be overpriced. He has an injury history too.

Sanchez came with some question marks of his own as a rental and was good for a Top 25 guy. I think what many on this board do is try to think of what "fair value" would be for these guys.. you know, for 2 mos+ of a less than ace SP for a playoff run.. but the market doesn't work like that.

Josh Lindblom managed to get Shane Victorino last year, I guess.

Firstly, C prospects are sometimes potentially elite players but get a C due to how far away they are. Secondly, packaging non elite prospects to the Cubs can work and will be done by others and here's why. No matter if they deny it, it's known that they will be looking for international free agent cap spending money in the deals they make in order to load up. This spending money can be reallocated in trades.

Dealing with the Cubs may not be so much what kids are sent, its the cap cash that is added.

Omar Infante was a big part of the Tigers trade with Miami as well.

Ok. We will agree to disagree:) We will revisit it at the deadline because I'm pretty certain Garza will be moved and we will see what the haul is.

Pretty sure Garza lands with the Orioles, maybe the Red Sox. I'm still guessing 2 prospects, neither elite but each good and some international free agent spending money.

It's going to be a hell of a lot more than a package of Pillar, Jiminez, and Nessy. I don't even want to add at the deadline and I'd move that package to get a head start on locking Garza up.

The Cubs wouldn't do that deal, agreed. Unlike the ChiSox who are looking to dump a salary and while looking for position players, maybe one near to the Majors, the Cubs probably want arms who are in A-ball.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm pretty comfortable with Esmil Rogers and Chien Ming Wang.

Ricky Romero is also really turning things around, according to some industry insiders that I chatted with on Facebook.

I'm actually OK with standing pat on the stating staff as well. I don't think Wang lasts all year, I think we see some reinforcements off the DL

I'd love to see an upgrade at 2B now though and Kawasaki kept as utility

I would love to grab a up and coming pitcher, one like Matt Moore or Hellickson.. what would it take to pry them away?

the fact that we're even having this conversation is a testament to how f***ing stupid it was to go all-in this year. Look at the investment in pitching (and reyes) over the last 11 months:

Out:

Noah syndergaard

travis d'arnaud

asher wojciechowski

kevin comer

joe musgrove

carlos perez

henderson alvarez

jake marisnick

justin nicolino

anthony desclafani

wuilmer becerra

in:

Ra dickey (age 38-40) for $30 million

josh johnson (age 29) for $13.75 million

mark buehrle (age 34-46) for $48 million

ja happ (age 30-32) for $15.6 million

we've paid sticker price in terms or dollars and gutted the farm for a full rotation of 30+ pitchers... And we still need more. This is exactly how you don't build a team.

Prepare to part with Sanchez or Osuna.

Osuna? Sure, if we can get an extension for him. Garza is a damn good pitcher who was dominating in the AL East

Well we did get Reyes with JJ & MB but I get your point

Dickey and Happ trades were the dumnist of the dumn
