Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Did the org really just call up thole to catch dickey? Shouldn't they give him more starts? It is hard to gauge if he can improve his hitting when he only plays once a week, plus JP is terrible. Why does the org seem to be in love with JPA? They should give thole more starts behind the plate.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 There is no Blue Jay that frustrates me more than JP. Talk about a one tool player, and the worst thing is his power plays down because his hit tool is so bad.
JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Absolutely mind boggling how JP isn't in AAA right now.

admin Site Manager Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Sadly, JPA is probably our long term catcher, and Jimenez will be dealt.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 once AA gets a hard on for a player, no one can tell him anything and we are stuck with some pretty bad players. whoever is teaching AA to evaluate players needs to be shot and pissed on, not necessarily in that order.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Sadly, JPA is probably our long term catcher, and Jimenez will be dealt. Why is that probable?
admin Site Manager Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Why is that probable? Because I have a feeling FO thinks he's doing a great job.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Because I have a feeling FO thinks he's doing a great job. Really? Or are you just speaking out if frustration? I don't think it is probable that he is the Jays long term catcher at all. I could see Jimenez here sometime next year.

admin Site Manager Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 i bet you said the same thing about dnaurd Really. No frustration, felt this way since last year even. I just get a feeling they see him as a catcher with 'power' and defense improving. He'll be close to 30HR this year, which is great for a catcher.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Worst catching combo in the league?
admin Site Manager Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 There are 41 catchers with atleast 100ABs. Based on a 500AB season, JPA is on pace for .92WAR. That places him 31 out of 41 catchers. Yan Gomes with 112AB (SSS), would be on pace for 4.9WAR. John Buck 1.8WAR

kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I really don't believe AA or any in the organization are not aware of JPA,s faults . I have listened to the radio broadcasts of several games where Jack ,s disgust of his catching ability was so apparent and Zaun talks about it lots . Catching is the biggest need on this club and they know it . I just don't see what can be done this year . AA could probably trade for a guy like Mathis but we aren't getting a front line catcher . Still if Lawrie was back swinging the bat well and Reyes hitting I believe this offense has enough that we could afford a light bat like Mathis in the lineup but the 40 man roster is such a mess which is why Blanco had to go . I just don't think he is coachable and has no clue of the strike zone .
admin Site Manager Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Buck @ 6M JPA @506K JP = Less $/WAR Good point. But $6M for 1.8WAR > $500K for .92WAR. What I mean is $6M for 1.8WAR is worth the cost.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Are you guy's really serious about playing Thole more? He's even worse than JP, Thole needs to hit higher than .105 before he starts taking playing time away from JP.

Catcher is more about defense, and thole has not played enough to gauge his hitting. First time watching baseball?
backontop Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I don't know what Thole did last year with the Mets. But yes, JPA's only asset is that he hits a home run once in a blue moon. I say its time for AA to go back to the drawing board and look for a new catcher.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 18 PAs. 19 and 2 hits, I'm all for playing the best player - but make him prove himself first. From what I've seen so far he's JP minus the power.

First time watching baseball? I should be asking you the same question, go on the Mets forum board search Thole's name see how Mets fans felt about Thole. I know your desperate to rid the Jays of JP, but I can't see Thole being the answer.

Most fansd will bad mouth any former players the moment they leave no matter the reality. Thole is not the long term answer, but neither is JP, so play the better defensive player.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 They both have produced the same offensively in their careers - just s***** in different ways.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Okay, let's give him a chance to prove himself, say... more than 18 PAs (that may have been from before today's game...) He get's his chance every 5 games, if he play's well start him next game. But why would any sane manager just bench his starting catcher for a guy playing worse and hasn't even caught any of the SP before (except Dickey)?
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 He did prove himself, in Buffalo. He should be seeing more action then every 5 days. He should be facing more RHP'ing and seeing zero Lefties. AAA, come on now. Do you want me to post JP's AAA numbers?
