Unless he busts (a high chance among all prospects), a floor of Matt Stairs ain't too shabby!

Dude has some legitimate upside as a hitter. Best-case scenario, I could see him having a Paul Konerko-type career with the bat. Even though his swing has holes, I don't think he fits the typical strikeout-power, all-or-nothing hitter.

Davis is 6'3" 230 lbs lefty.

Rowdy is 6'4" 220 lbs lefty.

Rowdy has the most power this year, so if you want to take a shot at the next Chris Davis, that's not a bad gamble.

His parents must be loaded. 30 k a year to be enrolled in that school plus textbooks and other expenses.

I guess education is more important to him and his parents than turning pro.

So if he's already rich, you wouldn't mind seeing him get richer, but if he's poor, you wish he never comes across that kind of money again? I don't really get that sentiment. I don't feel the way with Bickford that I did with Beede at all. I hated Beede for the way he handled his negotiations and he was just an all around douchebag. I didn't want to see him succeed. I have nothing against Bickford. He has 1st overall pick kind of potential and if he ends up drafted higher than the Jays picked him, hats off to him.

Meh, I'm just saying if education is his reason, it doesn't irk me as much, I was thinking greed or ill advised advice was fuelling his decision. The greed of some of these families and agents can be ridiculous, and all to play a sport you love!! So, all in all it really isn't about Bickford, but the process and greed. Honestly, I'm happy he didn't sign, the idea of having possibly 3 first round picks next year is pretty sexy.

The Bickford case was handled very well by both parties (Jays FO and Bickford).

You guys need to remember that the only reason we drafted Bickford 10th overall was because of 1 game he played. Before that one game, he was probably going to be drafted 2nd-3rd round.

I really think it's a huge gamble for the kid not to take 3mil dollars. If it's because he wanted more money than i think he's dumb.

Pitcher Phil Bickford from Westlake Village Oaks Christian, drafted No. 10 by the Toronto Blue Jays, failed to reach agreement before Friday’s signing deadline and will enroll at Cal State Fullerton in the fall.

 

Asked if he were ready to do a cartwheel, Fullerton Coach Rick Vanderhook said, “I would if I could, except I’m driving.”

 

Bickford, who was throwing 96 mph this spring, will join a starting rotation that could rival the best in college baseball. Sophomores Justin Garza (12-0, 2.03 ERA) and Thomas Eshelman (12-3, 1.48) and junior Grahamm Wiest (9-3, 3.27) all return from a team that lost to UCLA in a Super Regional.

 

“I think our guys are pretty good, and it adds another guy who’s pretty good,” Vanderhook said.

 

Vanderhook said Bickford indicated to him that he and his family decided to take the college option.

 

“I think they just want to go the school route,” he said. “There’s two different ways to do it, out of high school or college. I think they want Phil to go to school and develop and get an education and start to be who he is as a person. A lot people do it, but not many drafted in the first round. I don’t think it’s the wrong way to go."

 

Bickford was the only first-round pick not to be signed.

Well, wasn't AA signed to a 5-year contract? If you analyze where they were prior to the trades, the organization needed this year to overcome the injuries to the starting rotation and also another year of development for guys like Syndergaard, Sanchez and Nicolino to possibly reach AA. Also for emerging guys like Nolin and the just drafted Stroman to reach AAA. In terms of position players, D'Arnaud needed probably half a season at AAA and Gose turns out needed the whole year there. The organization would've been better served to wait another year and then it would've been primed to make a push with talent reaching MLB and more talent at AAA & AA for depth or to trade and acquire established major leaguers since the values of guys like Nolin, Stroman, Syndergaard, Sanchez and Nicolino would be much higher being in the upper minors.

 

Anyway, just saying that it seems to me that Beeston/Rogers didn't want to go through another rebuilding year given the disastrous 2nd half in 2012 and instead of risking striking out on FA, they overpaid with their farm system to make sure they got players.
