He can refuse to allow them to draft him a second time. Just as he could have done with the Pirates or the Tigers. I don't see them not having a good idea what he wants this time around and he'll sign at a price where it allows them to sign everyone. Boras has a great relationship with Luhnow and my guess is they agree to an underslot value with a callup this year.

Well that ruins my whole evil plan.

I like the format angrioter

Love that this new board lets you make tables etc and edit them later.

Haha... I remember last year someone started a thread and asked everybody not to reply directly to him as he could continue to update the original post..... as long as no one replied.... .. asking a bunch of trolls not to troll.

The draft seriously needs to be abolished. Jonah Keri had a nice little Grantland article on it (admittedly stolen idea from David Rawnsley from about 10 years ago) . Just have signing pools for all amateurs, just like the international pools. Everyone is a free agent...but the teams have limits on what they can spend, worst teams get more to spend. Every player can see their value from every single team, if they don't get their number they go to college.

I don't think it does. He might have just given consent for the Astros to take him when he planned on keeping the FA option open. So he'd get drafted, and if they're willing to pay however f***ing much Boras wants then he'll sign, if not, he'll go to free agency and sign where he pleases (come to Toronto, mark! It isn't THAT bad!).

This is assuming he CAN go to FA, which I don't know if he can.

It can't be that simple, if it were, Boras would have just said "there's no way he signs for less than $20M" and just let him become a free agent without restrictions next year (and he plays a year in indie ball). Would be a LOT more money in Boras' pocket (all he really cares about) with a little patience.

That's true, I guess they'd bank on collusion from the owners to stop that? No clue how this works.

This is why the MLB should go the way of the NBA Draft. You have a permanent slot number that doesn't change. Once your drafted you're no longer eligible to play in the NCAA. It will also force kids to make the decision to play baseball.

Would be a problem for later round high-school picks who would rather get an education than take 30th round slot money...

Well that just brings me to my second point. It's ridiculous that you either sign out of high school or your forced to attend college for a minimum of 3 years. Unless you go the junior college route which often times isn't an option for top prospects because it could potentially hurt there draft stock playing against lesser competition. The best players get paid everyone else has to earn it the old fashion way. It's the way it should be. Eliminate leverage period.

Maybe you could do that for the top 10 rounds or something. I'd be in favour of hard slots either way.

It would be awesome if the NBA draft had 30 rounds.

He's at every autograph signing hours early from what I understand. I think it's great that he's not only thrived on twitter (4,230 followers, almost all baseball players and fans) but he even appears to have got himself a woman.

A little surprised that Sandberg just signed for $775K...I'm find it hard to believe that so many teams would let him go in the 2nd if they knew that was his number, well done by the Phillies

I think this guy might just be milking the asbergers just a tad. I realise that there are varying degrees of functionability related to this condition, but generally most people lead quite normal lives. My best mate has a mild case, he lives quite comfortably as computer programmer with his girl and a dog. Either way thougu props on him for finding an outlet.

Jim Callis answering questions.

This Blue Jays draft doesn’t appear to be getting as much hype and love as the past two have. What’s your overall take on Toronto’s draft? Please give us a few names to keep an eye on as potential steals for the Jays.

Rick Brasil

Toronto

How do you think the Blue Jays did in the 2013 draft, considering this is the first in many years that they didn’t have any extra picks?

Erin Peters

Morden, Manitoba

Realistically, who do you think the Blue Jays will be able to lock up between lefthanders Jake Brentz (11th round) and Eric Lauer (17th), righty Sam Tewes (22nd) and first baseman Rowdy Tellez (30th)?

Will Tam

Toronto

The Blue Jays had four picks before the second round (and nine in the first three rounds) in 2010, five before the second round (and nine in the top two rounds) in 2011 and five before the second round last year. This June, they didn’t have any extra selections.

Toronto’s draft was all about pitching, as it took arms with its first nine selections. California high school righthander Phil Bickford (No. 10 overall) had as much helium as anyone in the week before the draft, and his lively 90-96 mph fastball can be unhittable at times.

The Jays followed Bickford up with two more hard-throwing prep righties in Kentucky’s Clinton Hollon (second) and Arizona’s Patrick Murphy (third), with the latter still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Toronto backed those three righthanders up with three straight southpaws, grabbing projectable Alabama high schooler Evan Smith in the fourth round and polished collegians Daniel Lietz (Heartland, Ill., CC) and Matt Boyd (Oregon State) in the fifth and sixth.

Bickford’s reported asking price was more than $1 million above the assigned $2,921,400 value for his pick. The Blue Jays should be able to create extra money in their $6,398,200 bonus pool, however. Hollon is considered a very easy sign, Murphy and Smith went higher than expected (neither made the BA 500) and Toronto’s sixth-, eighth-, ninth- and 10th-rounders all are college seniors.

The Jays should still have significant change left over after signing Bickford, and to me the key to their draft will be their ability to sign at least one of the four significant late-rounders whom Will mentioned above. I suspect they’ll land one or two of them.

Tellez (59th), Brentz (80th), Lauer (125th) and Tewes (175th) all ranked prominently on the BA 500 and fell for signability reasons. Tellez had as much lefthanded power as anyone in the 2013 draft, and he’d easily be the best position player Toronto landed. Brentz is raw but can hit 96 mph as a lefty, while Lauer and Tewes are very athletic and projectable.

In terms of sleepers, I like a pair of catchers, West Appleton (Wis.) High’s Danny Jansen (16th round) and Florida Gulf Coast’s Mike Reeves (21st). A Jacksonville recruit, Jansen is a physical player with arm strength and power potential. Reeves doesn’t have the same pop but does possess fine catch-and-throw skills.

Wow. First 9 picks were all pitchers.

I'm glad to see the Jays finally recognize their inability to develop position players.

Better to just draft arms, and then trade some of them for position players, before they hit MLB.

Because this is what I found

Pitcher Sam Tewes, from Waverly (Neb.) High told Kemnitz he will attend WSU. Toronto picked him in the 22nd round.

“He seems very solid and very excited,” Kemnitz said
