Another reason why Jon Daniels and Theo Epstein are elite baseball executives and AA is...well...not. They're always looking for loopholes to exploit. Trying to be smarter than everyone else, and succeeding more often than not.

From today's BA article.

I've been advocating this strategy for some time, particularly on the IFA market where the restrictions and penalties are not so punitive. Basically you sign as many players as you want or can afford and sit out one IFA year. You can actually get more quantity and quality of talent than you could by just abiding by the rules year after year. Also, an interesting point brought up by BA is that apparently you don't lose your bonus pool money for the next year by going over the cap, you're just restricted in how you spend it, so you can conceivably trade whatever excess you're not allowed to spend for something useful like the Astros did in getting prospect Ronny Torres from the Cubs.

Eh, I think it's a great strategy if you feel there is a player that is a star. However with the bust rate of even big bonus 16yo IFA targets I think a steady wave of talent is more beneficial than big hauls. Additionally, I imagine the Jays will be able to land more talent next year with two of the biggest IFA spenders, in the Cubs and Rangers, sitting out.

I'm not sure about that though. Let's say you have a bonus pool of 3mm. If you spend 3 times that (so 9mm), that would give you about 3 years worth of talent in 1 year. That makes up for the 1 lost year you have the following season.

As an example, let's say this year the Jays had ignored the tax this year and signed Torres, Jimenez, Encarnacion, Diplan, Perez, Molina, Gudino, Tejada, Ho-Tseng, etc. That's 3 years worth of talent. Then next year we could still trade our 3mm pool space (that we can no longer use) to a team for their competitive balance pick. It's ingenious. That would give us potentially 4 picks in the top 60.

I think that is best case scenario though. No guarantee that you'd be able to land all that talent in any given year. I'd also be hard pressed to believe that a team would give up too much value for cap space that the other team cannot use. I'm sure they'll get something of value but nothing close to the full value of the ~$3M in cap space.

If more teams start going over the cap then there will be a huge risk that you go over the cap and only land half those guys. The Rangers and Cubs were fortunate to be on the cutting edge of this trend. They were able to exploit a market that always seems slow to adapt. I think we'll see more teams go this route next year and land less talent as a result.

Looks like the Astros acquired him. It's a worthwhile gamble for the cost I think, and Jeff Luhnow has a good eye for talent. Cecil Fielder part deux?

Jeez. The Rangers sign another top 30 guy.

The Rangers signed 16-year-old Dominican infielder Yimmelvyn Alonzo for $350K, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. Over at BA, Badler points out that because Texas is already 15 percent over their spending pool, the Rangers will have to pay a 100 percent overage fee, meaning Alonzo essentially cost them $700K. Sanchez writes that Alonzo has some of the best raw power in this year's class of international prospects, though scouts are split on whether or not he can stay at shortstop. Some feel he will ultimately end up in the outfield or even at first base as he continues to grow.

Can't find anything about him, is he what AA got for that money cap he traded for?

Looks like a pitcher that throws in the low 90's. Can't easily find anything else out.

I wonder if Blue Jays are going to do what the Rangers and Cubs last year. Ace, How deep is the talent for IFA 2014?

Its been rumored that this is what the Yanks plan to do (even bigger than the Cubs did)

I think the reports are that the Yankees are going all out in the IFA next year, and will take all the penalties. Might be a tough year for signing them.

How well respected is the Blue Jays compared to the Yankees in south american countries?

in this environment of reduced international bonuses, I think the all mighty dollar is respected more than any team.

I'm talking about Kids and their families preference to pick Blue Jays over other teams. If Jays do the same thing what the Cubs and Rangers did last season.

RHP Jose Diaz, 21, from Santo Domingo.

RHP Luis Gomez, 21, from Santiago.

RHP Jeffry Martinez, 20, from Santo Domingo.

OF Francisco Rodriguez, 19, from San Cristobal.

RHP Luis Sanchez, 19, from Puerto Plata.

SS Junior Vasquez, 18,

RHP Thony Vinicio, 19, from Santo Domingo.

Jays recently signed these players, I would have to imagine with the cap money we received in the trade earlier. Ace, got any information? Seems like org fillers to me.

Ace and I are working in that. Stay turn!! :)

Hey, sorry no info right now. Angelo and me have been busy working on something about July 2 free agents. I was supposed to have the first part done this afternoon but I got stuck downtown, so it will come out tomorrow. If anything this guy

will have info on these players if they're from the DR. If they're from Venezuela, I know someone to ask, so I'll check later on.

As a fellow '97, it's kind of s*****.

As someone born near him, what am I even doing with my life?

So now that you are finished part 1, any information on the following guys?

RHP Jose Diaz, 21, from Santo Domingo.

RHP Luis Gomez, 21, from Santiago.

RHP Jeffry Martinez, 20, from Santo Domingo.

OF Francisco Rodriguez, 19, from San Cristobal.

RHP Luis Sanchez, 19, from Puerto Plata.

SS Junior Vasquez, 18,

RHP Thony Vinicio, 19, from Santo Domingo.

RHP Hansel Rodriguez 16

The org fillers don't really matter, but if there was anything on Rodriguez and Vasquez that would be nice.

I'll look into King. Like I said, the guy with the twitter handle I gave would definitely know more than me about them.

I really hope the Jays sign the Venezuelan catcher Ricardo Gonzalez this year and Michael Ynoa's younger brother, or maybe Miguel Flames (just because of that awesome name). Flames baby!!!!!

I would like to read through his tweets, but he tweets a lot per day and in a different language. Pretty hard to cherrypick tweets that could have been weeks ago from that!

Can you ask this guy if he has any information on Hansel Rodriguez and Junior Vasquez?

dSoldevila is a troll.

Ask to----> @iplbaseball_rd and iplbaseball@iplbaseball.com
