mitchf Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Parker and AA have some work to do. We took 2 big young arms with questionable secondary pitches that are also tough signs. Then let's hope they don't sign. Wait for ownership to throw a grenade in the front offices and then go into next year with two 1sts.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 PG top 50 players remaining. 23. Denney 39. Wahl 43. Connor Jones 45. Boldt (pure athlete...I bet he goes soon but if not I think the Twins take him) 46. Andrew Mitchell (another bullpen guy most likely)
mitchf Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I actually wouldn't mind that. Next years draft is stacked at the top and also quite deep. Good year to be terrible. Just saying. You shouldn't mind it. A new regime would put an emphasis on position players and actually turn these picks into something.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Guys I'm looking at for #87: Boldt Healy Milone O'Neill Collymore Quantrill Whitson Martarano Denney Brentz

I think we have a good bargaining position. If we don't sign them (not saying we won't but if) we'll have 2 picks and 4mm more to spend in next years draft. Hometown hero Gareth Morgan is expected to go around where our pick would be.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Balog...all about the size. Saw him pitch against Stanford early in the year.

Keith Law said, Jones has told teams there is no way he's signing, that he's going to school. I wonder if we'll pull an Alford this year with a guy like Joey Martarano. Sign him and let him play football too.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Cord Sandberg to finish the first day?
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Guys I'm looking at for #87: Boldt Healy Milone O'Neill Collymore Quantrill Whitson Martarano Denney Brentz I want one of the Canucks. Also like I mentioned, I think we can draft Martarano later and sign him to a multi-sport deal like Alford. Sign him for cheaper and let him play football in the fall.
Errorcebia Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 These threads are getting way too long. Did we make good picks? I don't follow draft business.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I will be interesting to see what the Jays do with their later picks. If they draft a series of cheap seniors like last year,we'll know they are serious about trying to sign at least one of the first two picks. If they draft actual prospects, we'll know they are essentially deferring their early picks until next year.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 These threads are getting way too long. Did we make good picks? I don't follow draft business. A couple of hard to sign high school pitchers with spinnability concerns. The first is stupid young and has a great fastball and basically nothing else at this point. The second is better overall and was once considered a top prospect until injury concerns developed. They are both risky picks that the Jays might not try too hard to sign since next year's draft is deeper. At the same time, they both would make very intriguing prospects if they did sign. Both went earlier than where most experts had them ranked.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Yeah, similar to last year. Shi Davidi of Sportsnet broke down the Blue Jays' draft strategy and spoke with Matt Smoral about his draft experience last year. The left-hander, who saw his stock drop thanks to a stress fracture in his right foot, assumed he was UNC-bound as he didn't expect any club to meet his $2MM asking price. “Initially, I went, not into panic, but said, ‘Oh crap, I’m going to college,’” the No. 50 pick in last year's draft said. “[The new rules] definitely changed the game but the way I looked at was, I went in there with a number that me and my family and my agent got together, and I was good with going either way." Toronto found room in the budget for Smoral by essentially punting their picks from rounds 4-10, and Davidi surmises that they'll be open to getting creative this year if another opportunity falls into their lap. Round 1-4 High ceiling 5-10 Garbage 11-40 High/low ceiling guys

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 BA top 50 picks remaining. 25. Denney wanted $3M from what I understood. Arkansas Commit 34. Jones -UVA commits tend to be tough signs, ACE was saying that he told teams not to draft him. 35. Serrano - Dad is the UT coach. Got to figure he'll be a tough (impossible) sign 36. Wahl - As I said earlier I don't get it. Has done everything Ole Miss asked him to do, throws hard has okay secondary stuff. Could be a mislabel situation as scouts peg him as a Reliever because he works 97 from the pen, but seldom breaks 92 as a starter. To me that makes him a smart pitcher...I think teams are making a mistake here unless there is an injury concern that I haven't heard about. 40. Sandberg (QB commitment to Mississippi State should be a tough sign) 49. Masek - Like Wahl was projected to be a reliever, then suddenly he showed great stuff as a starter. Had a shoulder injury which I'm sure is causing him to drop as well. I think it's another "scouts don't like him" pick.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 I really think Bickford is a our pick. So was I the only one that got it right?
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Google Hangout with BA discussing the first round. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/draft-talk-google-hangout/ Just talked about the Jays. You can re-watch it. Liked Bickford. Didn't like Hollon. Think he's a reliever. Convinced he might have an advanced deal to have moved up to 47.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 Hey I just thought about this...someone owes me $20 for Appel going number 1. Who was that?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 7, 2013 Author Posted June 7, 2013 As I posted on Stoeten's latest blog. Here are the numbers for success rate of high school pitchers drafted in the first round from 1990 to 2006: Of the 153 High School pitchers drafted from 1990, 102 have provided less than 1 bWAR. Only 11 have provided more than 20 bWAR of those 11 just Halladay and CC have provide more than 50 bWAR. The context of that number means less without knowing the College pitcher and hitter numbers but I know that it's better as I've read the research. Eventually I'll get the numbers for every round. It's tough to weed out the non signee's though.
backontop Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 Why are great future baseball players so hard to find compared to other sports? Yes you can learn so much from Pro coaches. But tell that to Romero and Gose. AA was so thrilled when he got Gose in a trade, He said all we have to do is teach him how to hit, HA HA HA, The man has to have a hitting aptitude, YOU JUST CANT LEARN ANY HUCKBERRY FIN HOW TO HIT! Other wise, grab M. Wilner, he's big, AA, Just Learn the dood how to hit, then we can get him off of TALK and make him a DH. People GOSE is not are best minor league prospect, he never hit anywhere before, and his 220 average is the best you are going to see. Too bad considering this dude could easily still 100 bases per season if he COULD hit.
backontop Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 The baseball draft is as exciting as the all star game. The guy you draft # 1 could be a bum, the guy you draft # 15 could be that next Hall of Famer. Thats baseball. (draft time )
