oakville69 Verified Member Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Since AA became GM in October 2009, the Jays seem to always have a weak bench relative to their AL East competitors. Is this a blind spot on AA's part? I know building a strong bench isn't a top priority, but our back up catcher can't hit or run. Davis can run , but he is only effective against LHP as a hitter. Izturis or Boni have not been effective this year. Bonifacio should stop trying to bunt. The Jays have not had a power bat off the bench in a few years. I vaguely recall an old guy from New Brunswick in 2008 who had a good bat. He may have ended up with the Phillies. Thoughts?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 How about Anthopoulos solidify 2B, C, 1b or DH first? I agree over all that the bench hasn't been strong, but he has some holes on the field and DH he hasn't addressed. Lind is being properly used by the manager so he looks better, but he should've gotten a better platoon partner no doubt.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 The bench is important but I would think trying trying to assemble a rotation that isn't constantly affected by nagging injuries or being completely awful would be priority #1

Was Izturis the best 2B available? Teahan was useless. Kelly Johnson struck out too much but was solid defensively. Aaron Hill performed poorly as a Blue Jay in 2010 & 2011 but sure enough had a great 2012 as a Diamondback. As for Catcher , I would bring up Thole.

Last year the young pitchers kept getting hurt & needed Tommy John. This year it's back troubles with an experienced rotation. Johnson has always had injury problems. Happ was a fluke injury. Romero's problems are simply strange. Morrow has never pitched a full season.
