I don't listen to this Wilner character, but from all accounts, it sounds like he's the typical homer who will twist stats and logic to defend an incompetent organization that gutted its farm system to get older and injury-prone players mostly on the decline.

This is why the Toronto Blue Jays are such a horrible organization. You can't have players with a .230 on base percentage. I mean you'd like to avoid players with even a .sub .300... but that will happen even on good teams. But sub .250?? And two of them.

It's a trajic tale. Once upon a time there was a fiesty blue jays radio host... Surprisingly fiesty considering he looked like a dough boy (sorry Wilner buddy, but it's true). Living the dream. Nice family, nice house, great, great job. He was a heck of a guy and spoke up for the fans. He knew the fans (atleast some of the educated ones) didn't like Cito Gaston. So for us he took a stand and told Cito off.

 

Rogers then put the muzzle on him. He got a suspension and hasn't been the same since. Now just basically a tub of glue spouting happy goofy pro-rogers propaganda.

Today he was using RBIs, doubles and homers to praise JPA. "x-th in the AL among catchers in RBI, first in homers, etc." Yet, if you called in to talk about a different player's lack of RBIs or home runs, he will tear you apart and say that such things don't matter.

 

 

It's ridiculous. If you replace JP and Boni with league average hitters the Jays would be the best offense in the league, miles ahead of the Red Sox. Wilner says "Well, you don't need all-stars at every position." There's a world of difference between a non-all-star, and a guy who hits .210 with a .230 OBP while striking out a third of the time. Boni and JPA are so bad they destroy everything good that EE and Bautista can provide. They literally entirely cancel out the production of two of the best ten hitters in the league.

 

Some people have wondered over the past few days how the Red Sox are tops in offense without many true sluggers. It's because they don't have any guys like Boni or JPA. All of their hitters will give you a good with a solid average. They have guys off the bench who can come in late in the game and exploit a matchup.

 

This isn't about Wilner per se, it's about Wilner buying into a philosophy that AA has chosen to abide by. That you can get three of four great hitters and then stop worrying about offense. Which is crazy. Those 5-9 slots matter critically to winning whether you have the 1-4 slots down or not.

Even Bostons weak links still give you a OBP above .300 like a Stephen Drew and they dont totally kill your offense.

Boni is easily replaced with Kawasaki, when Lawrie comes back Izzy as well - but replacing J.P is a little more difficult.
