We should do a forum mock draft, that would be a lot of fun. Give 30 posters a team each and have them draft the first round.

It would be awesome if we had 30 posters who followed the draft enough to do this. Admittedly my knowledge of the class ends around the top 20.

I'd like to see the 5 or 6 posters that really follow the draft do a top 15 and make a forum consensus for Thurs.

Can we actually do this? But maybe for like 5 rounds? I really like this idea.

I would take any top 15 team.

Sure. We'd start a new thread and have a time limit per pick. We could get it started really soon.

Maybe a few posters get to represent two teams.

Im down for this.

Is this for who we think teams will take, or who we would take (the results of which can't really be evaluated for a few years)?

I'd say who we would take based on team, just for fun, not really for bragging rights.

who are you hoping the jays take come this draft? im crossing my balls that they get a shot at frazier. i heard they they had a lot of interest in austin wilson, and jp crawford could draw their interest as well. although, we met our jp quota already so thats out. anybody mind if i swear a little here???...f***ing beede is 12-0 prick head, shoulda signed him, damn!!!!

I hope that the 2013 draft will worth the pain of crossing your balls...

It's for fun! And if someone remembers we'll look at it in a few years. You in?

I think I'll pass, but I'd be game for us all submitting what we think the first round will look like. One point for each slot we miss by, low score wins. I'd also be game for something where we choose who we would take each time the Jays pick, and then look back in a few years and see if we can pick better than AA can :)

So according to Keith Law, Jonathan Gray's just been tested positive for banned substance (adderall).

What does that mean as a non-professional. I imagine its banned by the NCAA as well, but that wouldn't carry over to his pro career would it?

Holy s***.

All I'm thinking about right now is how this affects his draft stock.

Carlos Riuz got suspended for it.

What?

"Adderall use without an exemption is prohibited under the Joint Drug Agreement between Major League Baseball and its players' union. More than 110 players were granted exemptions in 2012, according to the independent program administrator's report released in November. Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was suspended for the first 25 games of the 2013 season after he tested positive for Adderall for the second time without a valid exemption."

It's not allowed in the MLB.

feels like less and less chance of jays picking players they want (since every prospect just shifted one spot up).

How far do you think he falls, though?

Well, I m just quoting from the KLAW article. I meant no MLB suspension for Gray. It is indeed a banned substance.

Oh, yeah, no MLB suspension, but it's still a banned substance.

Wow, this is interesting. I don't think he drops at all though. If the Astros think he's the best prospect in the draft and don't think this points to a makeup concern, they'll take him.

If his makeup was already not great, then maybe this pushes him down a few spots.

Him slipping to 10 would be ermahgerd.

I don't think this will have a direct effect on Jays, meaning I don't think Jays would take him at 10 anyway (maybe because he would become a signability concern ala Appel last year).

But teams ahead of Jays would, more or less, less likely prefer to pick him depending on each team's take on the issue.

If so, that means which ever prospect that was supposed to go at 10 would probably be at 9 now. So I'd say disadvantageous for the Jays, but every team is affected.

Gray should not be suspended once he is drafted, but similar to what the whitesox did with tyler flowers(?) who was suspended in college for steriods they held him out the length of his suposed suspension anyways.

I don't think the MLB can test him yet (he isn't a member of the MLBPA) so it would be an NCAA suspension. I doubt it carries over to the MLB but, I'm not certain.

According to ESPN;

"The positive test will not result in a suspension, but will make Gray subject to additional follow-up testing once he begins his pro career, according to a source with Major League Baseball. "

Gray is a Junior though so it may effect the leverage he has in contract negotiations.

That might definitely cost Gray a few slots, but I doubt he'd fall as far as 10 so it shouldn't affect who is available. If he's there though, I think you take him and assign Kawasaki to follow the other GM's around for a few days bowing every 10 seconds and saying thank-you.

As for the bonus demands, we could presumably trade for a competitive balance pick, pick someone who would sign for the minimum, and use the extra money for Gray.

TBH I think it lowers his bonus demands enough to make him a lock to go #1.

It wasn't administered by the NCAA, so I don't think they could suspend him. NCAA has no details and I don't think MLB is allowed to disclose particulars. KLaw posted a inside article about it too, I'm sure it'll answer our questions: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=736

Thanks for the info North

I'm really curious what would happen if Gray failed to sign and returned to college for his senior season. I'm not an Insider so I can't read that article but, if that option is discussed I would really appreciate someone posting what KLAW has to say about it.

The Red Sox would take him at 8, they took Clay Buchholz, who stole laptops from a middle school while at McNeese State.

What a douche.

Keith Law from ESPN with his latest mock draft:

There hasn't been a ton of change at the top since my mock draft from Friday, but we did see one player -- prep right-hander Phil Bickford -- jump from off of the board into the top 10.

Below is my best projection for the top 33 picks in the draft -- the formal first round, plus the six compensatory picks that teams received for losing free agents who received qualifying offers this offseason. I'll have one more mock draft, to be unveiled Thursday morning, before the MLB draft Thursday evening.

1

Colin Moran

POS: 3B

B/T: L/R

HT: 6-3

WT: 215

School: North Carolina

Analysis: The only change from what I wrote last week is that Kris Bryant is still alive to be this pick, with both Jonathan Gray and Mark Appel still options. I do not believe the Astros will make a final decision until Wednesday or Thursday; they didn't settle on Carlos Correa at No. 1 overall until a few minutes before the actual pick last year.

2

Mark Appel

POS: RHP

HT: 6-5

WT: 215

School: Stanford

Analysis: Appel, Gray, or Kris Bryant here; I do think they'll take an arm, but Bryant is an outside possibility here, because right-handed power like his is hard to come by. Like Houston, the Cubs do not appear to have settled on a specific order of candidates.

3

Kris Bryant

POS: 3B/OF

B/T: R/R

HT: 6-5

WT: 215

School: San Diego

Analysis: This also could be Gray, or Moran, or maybe Austin Meadows, although I don't foresee a scenario where they get to Meadows on their preference list. He's been a predraft workout phenom in the past week, though.

4

Jonathan Gray

POS: RHP

HT: 6-4

WT: 239

School: Oklahoma

Analysis: If Appel, Gray, and Bryant go 1-2-3 in some order, this would be Kohl Stewart or Reese McGuire, the latter coming in below slot (allowing them to save money toward future picks).

5

Braden Shipley

POS: RHP

HT: 6-3

WT: 190

School: Nevada

Analysis: The Indians would love to get Moran or Bryant, but it seems unlikely they'll get Moran and unthinkable that they'd get Bryant. Clint Frazier is the other hot name here; GM Chris Antonetti flew to meet him last week.

6

Austin Meadows

POS: OF

B/T: L/L

HT: 6-3

WT: 200

School: Grayson (Ga.) HS

Analysis: Other names in the mix here are Shipley, Hunter Renfroe, and DJ Peterson.

They'll take Bryant or Moran, while also giving strong consideration to Meadows, Frazier, Stewart, Ryne Stanek and possibly Alex Gonzalez.

7

Ryne Stanek

POS: RHP

HT: 6-4

WT: 190

School: Arkansas

Analysis: The Red Sox are still wide open -- Meadows is high on their board (over Frazier), as are Renfroe, Peterson, Gonzalez, and possibly Stewart.

8

Phil Bickford

POS: RHP

HT: 6-4

WT: 185

School: Oaks Christian HS (Westlake Village, Calif.)

Analysis: I'm having a hard time with this one myself. Bickford throws hard, and there's a good chance he'll hit 100 mph at some point in the future, but he has a below-average breaking ball right now. If one of the college right-handers gets here, that would change the pick, but there's a strong industry sentiment as of Sunday night that Bickford -- who is getting a lot of attention after striking out 17 straight batters Saturday -- goes here.

9

Reese McGuire

POS: C

B/T: L/R

HT: 6-1

WT: 190

School: Kentwood HS (Kent, Wash.)

Analysis: I've also heard them eyeing Peterson, Frazier, and Trey Ball. Because the Pirates have the No. 14 pick as well, they have a fairly large bonus pool and are in good position to do something creative with lefty Sean Manaea, who looked like a top-five pick heading into the year (and will command top-five money), but whose season ended early due to a hip injury.

10

Trey Ball

POS: LHP/OF

HT: 6-6

WT: 180

School: New Castle (Ind.) HS

Analysis: I've only heard Ball, McGuire, and J.P. Crawford, with a slight chance they'd go for Bickford.

The way I look at it, there are at least 10 prospects I'd like in this draft, so there's no chance my board would be empty when we select.

Gray, Appel, Bryant, Stewart, Shipley, Frazier, Meadows, Stanek, McGuire, Crawford, Peterson, Renfroe, Smith, Harvey, Manea.

That's 15 guys and we pick 10th.

That's the last thing keeping me going despite that I know we're gonna take Ball, lol.

Sometimes I wonder how we're gonna look back on this thread in a couple years. Maybe I'll look like the biggest idiot ever for doubting Ball, or maybe I'll be right. That's the fun of the draft haha.
