A big part of the DJ Davis pick that a lot of people seem to look past is the fact that he was an under-slot guy which ultimately gave us more freedom to get creative later.

So was Stroman IIRC.

Gather around kids, lets take a look back at the 2012 thread

Dinger - "I'm also a big fan of Zunino, who is a lock to stay at catcher and be an at least average hitter with good pop. There is McCann upside there, IMO. And at 21, he'll contribute soon."

fatcow re Stroshow - ?"WOOO!!!!!!!!!!

This kid is already* Tim Collins 2.0 and can surpass* Chris Sale 2.0"

And there's a name I totally forgot about...Joel Carreno!

Zunino is pretty decent honestly. s*** hitter but fantastic defense.

which makes it infuriating cause all he needs to do is hit as an average catcher and you got an all-star.

heck, combine JP offense and Zunino defense and you got a pretty good player.

Zunino's offense = JP's offense

"JP offense" is not actually a thing. He has power sure but he still provides below average production even for an offensively poor position like catcher because his OBP is just that terrible.

Well if were going to play that game then I'll just throw out that I predicted Trout would suck simply because the Angels seemed to be doing a terrible job drafting and developing talent at the time.

You wouldn't want JP Arencibia offense coupled with elite defense? I would gladly take that. No where close to Russell Martin capabilities but I think it would be somewhere along the lines of Bengie Molina.

JP offense coupled with elite defense just means that the offense is bringing down the offense. He's not a productive offensive player. Of course he wasn't a productive defensive player either so he was just overall awfull, one of the worst catchers to ever play a full season. I mean I would certainly take JP offense coupled with elite defense over actual JP but I don't know why you're using JP offense as some sort of measure of being moderately productive offensively. It's not even a tangible improvement over what Zunino is doing now. They both have a wOBA in the 280s.

You get that JP Arencibia is a terrible hitter right? He owns a career 74 wRC+ in 1600 PA, and his best season offensively was in 2011 when he was 9% below league average.

I thought wRC does not take into account position, like WAR?

It's pretty unfair to compare

Zunino has a higher career wRC+ than JPA. How's that for a comparison?

you got me there. 6 points higher. Arencibia has higher iso and a lower K rate.

I guess they're practically similar, your point stands.

Someone who over their career has been 26% below league average is not a good hitter at any position.

I don't know how he's even arguing this. JP was terrible, no way around it

Anybody heard a word on Clinton Hollen? Where will he be pitching this year? Starting or relief?

Harris beyond SRF and Urena? idk

Why not? SRF probably has more upside but Harris is probably closer to the majors. Urena needs to get back to being patience at the plate but talented nevertheless
