As a Mark Appel owner, I hope Boxy is able to look back at this and laugh one day.

I doubt it. He doesn't have much of a sense of humour about these things, he tends to just get defensive and lash out.

Also Appel sux

I've been saying that since long before that trade.

It brings me even more joy that originally North had Appel, so not only did I dump Appel but in a backwards way I stole Pollock from North.

That original trade was all kinds of awesome. It ended up being Hanley for Cueto, Pollock and Gregerson.

O/U on Mark Appel's career = Luke Hochevar

which side you guys on?

Over, because I think he isn't a pen arm. I think he could have a Joe Blantonesque career.

Hahahah you couldn't have dumped Hanley at a better time, too.

CatsAss originally had Appel. I acquired him in a deal for Homer Bailey and was looking to flip him. It's not like I was shopping Appel for a while and you realized you could get Pollock for Appel so grabbed him from me.

I still think Hanley can hit so I don't really feel bad about the Cueto-Hanley swap.

Yeah I'd still take Hanley over Cueto.

f*** Cueto

I wouldn't. Hanley is super uninteresting as a OF or potentially a 1B. The steals are gone and the walk rate collapsed. He'll probably max out at 25 HR and his line lives and dies by BABIP. Plus I really can't stand how his helmet flies off after 30% of his swings.

Shoulder injury was basically chronic last season. I think he'll bounce back offensively

I agree that he should get a tighter helmet

Shoulder injuries are pretty much the worst injuries you can get as a baseball player. They can take years to heal properly and re-strengthen. Not only that, Hanley isn't even an elite hitter. Going back to 2011, his wRC+ is 120. His 2013 season is the biggest outlier, not 2015. Plus he's 32 and sorta fat for a baseball player. IMO most of his historic fantasy value was predicated on (1) SS eligibility, obviously, and (2) having a power/speed combo with an elite batting average. Well the speed is gone, the SS eligibility is gone, and he's batted .260 or less in 3 of the last 5 seasons.

The decision by Boston to sign him and plop him in LF was one of the weirdest big money front office decisions I have ever seen. Positional adjustment be damned, I don't know why anybody in their right mind would have thought that Hanley would be better or more valuable in LF than, say, third base. And then the layer on top of that is the green monster factor.

I just don't get it. He's been a bad SS his entire career, did he really decline that much in LA? I don't think so.

They should put Sandoval out of his misery and plop Hanley at 3rd. It probably improves the team defense.

Conversely, there's no logical reason why a career infielder should ever be that bad playing LF. Hanley is a lazy sack of s***, I think it really does come down to that.

I believe in Brent Strom. I'm going to take the over and even call for double digit fWAR

So like, 2.3?

Webster becomes a must own in all formats where you need a guy with Middle Reliever upside

ftfy.

fWAR by age 30 wager? Appel vs. Webster?

Well obviously you'd have to take Appel. He's like two years younger and Webster has already dug himself a -1.1 hole.

He's produced terrible results, sure. I like him because his three pitches have all shown above-average whiff rates and because his control issues seem to stem from him just losing the strike zone periodically and not from a consistent inability to throw strikes or a difficult-to-repeat delivery. I think there's a chance he irons out his control, learns to sequence his pitches properly and becomes something good.

I was going to ask when he hits the trade block in the LOD, but you don't even own him. I don't give you enough credit :(

I think I might own him.

So thanks North for talking him up!

and he's had two mental breakdowns. Get his head straight and who knows.
