They came to a settlement so I guess it's all done, but if I'm a player caught betting on non-NHL sports and suspended a long while, first thing I'm doing is going to my union rep with my helmet and said they enticed me to do it. Something about this story really rubs me the wrong way. Even had him apologizing for his "mistake". Guess the reporter thought so too therefore they made sure the logo was visible in the article.

If all he did was gamble on some other sport then we've jumped the shark. Gambling is legal, these teams/leagues/media entities lean into it in an aggressive way, and this is a 22 year old kid. Just batshit insane.

 

It's like Anheuser-Busch suspending an employee for drinking a Bud.

 

So if we give the Senators the benefit of the doubt, Pinto must have done something bizarre. I'm having trouble thinking of what it could be but some type of degenerate gambling.

Yeah that sounds bad enough to warrant this. It's like betting on your own games but worse because of the sneakiness.

I said this even last year at this time, but these betting ads are becoming too much. I understand running a 30-second commercial during a game, but can't stand watching Ken Reid and Evanka Osmak encouraging betting or discussing odds during broadcasts or during intermissions. Like I just want to watch a game without all this annoying and repetitive BS.

 

I'm glad now they banned sports athletes to appear in betting app commercials. But more needs to be done. Pretty much when you watch Sportsnet or SportsCentre, it's become a giant ad for Bet365 or Fan Duel.

RIP Adam Johnson. Total freak accident but boy that must be hard to accept for the poor guy whose skate got him. If u see some of the close calls in the NHL it’s a wonder that this don’t happen more often.

They really all should have neck protection. There's been too many close calls before this. I know Tomas Plekanec looked kind of dorky out there, but we'd all get used to it.

 

I know a lot of them are getting into using cut proof socks etc, need to protect this other obvious area of concern.

As stupid as it sounds the NHLPA would push against making it mandatory. Look at how they had to grandfather helmets being mandatory. It's run so backwards.

They need to make helmets with built in kevlar neck guard sheathing, that tucks under the shoulder pads or even clips to them and ties down.

I disagree. I didn't see the video but you guys prompted me to look it up. What I see is a missed hip check and the momentum carries him into Johnson, in a half defensive move half bad momentum which resulted in an accidental Shawn Michaels sweet chin music. I guess what he was trying to do is cover himself from being exposed to a hit from Johnson and his leg just went up way too high.

Completely agree. I have no idea why it's taking so long for full cages and neck guards to be mandatory.

Gotta make sure the policy on rainbow tape is solid before proper protective gear is enforced. NHL just attracts a different breed of human. The ultimate in "it won't happen to me" attitude so why do I have to wear such uncomfortable and sweat-inducing gear?

Listening to sportscenter and it sounds like teams have already started the process of testing neck protectors. It's a long time coming and unfortunate that they weren't mandatory before this tragedy occured.

Didn't Bill Daly come out yesterday or the day before and say that Bettman reached out to Walsh of the PA and said he wanted the neck protection conversation to be tabled? They know full well it isn't going to happen, but they want the media to know it isn't because of the NHL that it isn't happening.

 

It's a constant game that's being played... More so than the one on the ice.

I don't understand the resistance. They aren't uncomfortable and kids wear them for their entire minor hockey career. It's not something you have to get used to, it's something you just have to continue wearing. Full cages is exactly the same.

 

Is this all about appearance? They think it looks stupid? I've never once watched my kids play hockey, or any kind in minor hockey for that matter and said to myself "man, he looks so stupid with that neck guard on". It is beyond ridiculous. I could probably understand the argument that they don't want to go to full cages because it reduces the marketability of players if you can't see their face - but I still think that's stupid. Football players wear cages. You can see someone face through an Itech fishbowl mask just as much as you can see a QB or a RB (especially if they were the tinted visor).

 

I fully agree that it will just take players deciding to be trailblazers who decide to wear it on their own before we see any change at the NHL level. Those players will just have to put up with the mocking for a bit and grind through it. I mean, bullying isn't really "cool" anymore, so it's more likely to happen. I mean - someone just died. Now is the time for change.

They are a bit uncomfortable. At least, the old versions are. We used to tape them up to make them thinner in minor hockey. They probably aren't made the same anymore, though.

 

I think most of it is just not wanting to look like a dork.
