From what I understand, Leafs will not be able to afford all of Matthews, Nylander, Marner along with the commitments they already have. Perhaps Nylander will be moved for a higher priced d-man with an expiring contract, along with draft compensation. Would set up the Leafs for a serious cup run next season

Not necessarily true.

It will be tough, but there are other pieces that can be moved. Marleau has 2 years but might be gone after next season. Gardiner is an FA after next season. Martin is expendable. The Leafs have some good young cheap pieces that are very close to being ready to step in for some of the more expensive established parts.

This can work if they do it right and the kids can take the next step.

TML serious cup contenders now

Nylander for a D-man will happen now, IMO

Nylander is not a Babs type player

Trading Nylander would be a massive mistake for the Leaves so I hope they do it lol

Toronto is the centre of the hockey universe, just deal with it

The media has spent a decade insisting he was coming to Toronto, even fabricating an imminent underage signing and sending him to the AHL around 2008.

So this time I didn’t see the Leafs having a shot and there you go....

Fabricating and speculating are different.

The underage signing was a total fabrication the media floated for a week.

The recent times he could have come here were speculating. They acted like he had a sacred duty to play for the Leafs.

Godammit... so what's Brian Burke babbling on about?

Ah well... JT's a Leaf...W00T!!!

So what’s the point of the signing bonus if the cap hit is the same? Just a way for a rich team to make their offer more attractive by paying more money up front?

I guess so, I'm confused on this now, Burke seemed pissed that a team like Toronto can do this and small market teams can't.

That, and bonuses get paid even when there’s a lockout in a couple of years.

Komarov signed by the Islanders for 3 years, $3 M AAV.

Lol

I'm a Leafs fan, and this makes me happy

Have no f'ing clue how a FO would value Komarov at 3M per

The Jets traded Steve Mason, Joel Armia (viable 3rd/4th liner), a 4th and a 7th to clear cap space to sign Paul Stastny, only for Stastny to sign with Vegas. Jets end up empty handed. #dumn

That's part of it. Gimme my money now.

The other part is that, and it won't necessarily make a difference in this situation but, if Tavares was to say be shopped around, assuming he didn't have a NTC, he would be attractive to small market teams that could artificially increase their spending to hit the floor of the salary cap, without actually having to spend the dollars on him cause they were already paid up front by the Leafs. So $11m goes against the Sens, but they only actually have to pay Tavares a fraction of that out of their own pockets.
