Lol at all the butt hurt leafs fans (and the Calgary fan above) in this thread

Im pretty happy as a sens fan. Gets McDavid out of the conference and its nice he's with a Canadian team. There were much worse places he could of went than Edmonton. Imagine NJ won the lottery? Completely would of ruined his career. If Edmonton gets a decent coach and can develop some Dmen they will have a Cup Contender for 10 straight years.

Pretty sure everyone outside of Edmonton did a collective eye roll yesterday. Seeing the least competent organization in the league get continually rewarded for their failures is annoying.

I wonder if there's any trade out there that Edmonton would consider accepting.

Ekman-Larsson + Domi + pick #3 + Gormley

Nylander + Reilly + pick #4 + Kadri + Bernier

etc etc etc

Well at least we get a legit #1 overall pick. Kevin Lowe drove this thing into the ground after the cup run and it's been a rough go ever since.

Legit #1 overall pick? Hall definitely was. RNH might have been but the Oilers also might have ruined him. Yakupov sucks and that's hard to blame on Edmonton.

Best Defensemen for sure. Not even close to top 5 though. Defensemen just don't have as much impact on the game.

I disagree. He plays more minutes than anyone else and can impact the game in a ton of ways.

Erik Karlsson showed why he is a top 5 player in the NHL tonight. That was one of the best performances I've ever seen from a single player.

Well, if he's a top 5 player who had one of the best performances you've ever seen then why did his team get outshot by 15 and lose the game?

When top 5 talents have a dominant performance, their team tends to dominate along with them.

Ottawa also has players named Gryba, Boro, Ceci, Legwand, Neil who are terrible. Did you watch the entire game?

Forwards are both the first line of offence and first line of defence. Forwards have the most control over limiting shots in their own end and generating shots in the other end.

"Defenseman" is a misnomer.

D-men are able to play 50% more than forwards specifically because their job is easier and less demanding physically.

A huge inefficiency in the NHL is that teams almost never try to convert "failed" forwards to defense. Instead, they sign scrub defenseman to plug into the end of their depth charts.

Relegating a forward to the blueline, IMO, could be like moving a pitcher to the bullpen in baseball. NHL teams might be surprised at the gains.

It's also very stupid that anybody takes D-men high in the draft.

Well Karlsson isn't your typical Dman. The guy has the puck on his stick more than anyone and constantly takes it up the ice on zone exits and entries. He's always among the leaders in shot attempts for.

what forwards have converted to Dmen and been successful? Honestly, just wondering.. I know theres Buff and Burns but did they not start out as Dmen?

It's not something that teams really ever try to do. Not sure I could name anybody.

But it's no surprise to me that the best defenseman in the game (Karlsson) plays "like a forward".

I think it would be a lot harder than you think. There is a reason a lot of NHL dmen take longer to develop. Guys like Hedman weren't good for a few years out of the draft.

Yeah, probably because they're worse at hockey, generally speaking. It's no surprise that the lanky kid who couldn't skate well that you drafted in R1 took a dozen years to develop into something useful.

If I ran a team I would draft only forwards, convert some of them based on things like them having a harder slapshot or slower foot speed (analogize to a pitcher having a plus-plus FB but not enough command to stick as a SP), and we would f***ing light it up. It would be like a constant power play with 6 little Torey Krugs on my blue line.

somehow I don't think this would work like you think it would work. I don't have anything to back it up however.

Trust me. I played in the O.

This is probably a really good idea.

OH YEAH!! I forgot I kept this image from the pre-season. Nox posted this DangleFactory pre-season ranking. Saved specifically because I thought the Montreal projection was laughable (same with the NJ). Looks like I was right! :D

damn, image is too small... well, projections have Montreal finishing last in the division with a 37.3-33.5-11.2 record. Has NJ winning their division with a 42.9-29.4-9.8 record.

And just how good would Montreal have been if Carey Price didn't just turn in one of the best season long goaltending performances of all time?

Really though, projecting anything at the team level in the NHL is pretty much guessing now-a-days. So much parity and the loser point just makes a giant mess of the standings.

How much better would the league be without the loser point and shootout. So damn annoying.

*edit* I actually like the 3 point game best

The strange part is...does anybody even argue against this? Literally everyone I talk to about hockey on a day to day basis loathes the shootout.
