G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Joe Girardi will be returning as the #Yankees manager after signing a contract through 2017. (per @YankeesPR) Beat me to it Good move
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 The big question is if they will get their 2014 payroll under 189M It will cost them a ton of $$ if they don't but Steinbrenner Jr. is saying they won't reduce it below that threshold if it means fielding an "uncompetitive" team.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 They only have $84M for 2014 on the books currently, thanks to their persistence last offseason. It'd take quite the feat to add $100M+ in payroll in one offseason. Hal isn't happy to see the Rays and Red Sox in the playoff. Hal will spent a lot of money this coming offseason.

They'll have no trouble spending $100M+ this offseason.

That 84M is deceptive though. 84M but that's just a few scrubs like Cervelli, and the big $ guys like Sabbathia, Jeter, Tex and ARod. They have a ton of guys on 1 year contracts this year (Kuroda, Overbay, Youkilis) and then big $ guys going to free agency (Cano and Granderson) To field the same team next year (a team that cost a ton of money and missed the playoffs) will easily cost 100M more. To make it better??? Who knows.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 The Yankees have no trouble attracting free agents so they could buy a good team for next year. But it will cost a shitload of money. And it might not work if they keep signing these older guys like Ichiro and Youkilis. Cause even their franchise players like Jeter and CC may never be the same again.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Signing Tanaka and acquiring Bailey is one of the few ways our rotation could realistically be passable next year. Tanaka Bailey Dickey Buehrle Johnson? Morrow? Happ? Youngins I'd probably put Drabek and Hutch ahead of Happ. I really don't like the though of him being anywhere near the rotation next year.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I do agree that a #3 or better starter is a must for this team. I don't really know if you can bank on much more than that. At least you have the potential for a decent rotation with Dickey some FA Morrow Buehrle some combo of Stroman, Happ, Drabek, Hutch, McGowan, etc, etc... Depending on the quality of the FA starter, you have at least 2 guys who have the possibility of being #2+ guys in Morrow and Dickey. We aren't going to get an entire new and shiny rotation. Some bounce-back or luck is a requisite to us competing.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Maybe $65M, but $100M? I don't know, especially if you consider contracts can be back-loaded. You'd be talking Cano (20), McCann (15), Kuroda (15), Garza (14), Choo (13), Granderson (12) to get to $75M... and I don't know if filling the rest of the roster would cost $25M. Adding $100M is tough, even for the Yankees. That's a lot of compensation picks involved there as well.

You also left out Jeter. He brings that group to 100 right there. Plus they have some arbitration eligible players. Alex Rodriguez $25,000,000 CC Sabathia $23,000,000 Mark Teixeira $22,500,000 Vernon Wells $2,400,000 (Total$21,000,000) Alfonso Soriano $5,000,000 (Total$18,000,000) Derek Jeter $9.5M player option Ichiro Suzuki $6,500,000 David Robertson $6Mil Arbitration eligible Brett Gardner $5Mil Arbitration eligible Shawn Kelley $1.5Mil Arbitration eligible Jayson Nix $1.5Mil Arbitration eligible Ivan Nova $2.5Mil Arbitration eligible Michael Pineda $1Mil Arbitration eligible The Arbitration numbers are just guesses. That's 13 players for a total of 111.4 Million. And does anyone know if Wells and Soriano's full year salary total count on the Yankees Luxury Tax or just what the Yankees pay? Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I think Hutch is going to be knocking on the door during ST I honestly believe he is going to be a #3 type starter for a contending team. Depends on what the team wants to do. Is K numbers are still up and BB are not. I think it is just a matter of him finding his touch like he was just before he got hurt. However you are right. I can see Johnson coming back and Morrow will likely get a automatic spot. Its going to be interesting. I can see AA maybe trying to deal Buerhle but it is hard to say when MB was more or less our best pitcher last season. I agree on all points, specially Hutch and Morrow (this also applies to the other thread). With MB I think AA will retain him given that as mentioned he was our best and is always a very reliable starter, but it wouldn't be shocking if he did take some offers, considering that he might be going hard after a certain FA/IFA or might look upon the possibility that one or both of Stroman/Hutch will start the season in the big club.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Remarkable stat I just heard on the radio during the Cards Pirates broadcast while I'm driving: 2013 Cardinals scored the most runs in the NL this year despite hitting the third fewest home runs, and having the fewest stolen bases in the NL. How? They hit .330 with RISP, the highest recorded in the history of major league baseball, at least since the stat started being tracked. Remarkable? Yes. Repeatable? No way.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Crazy. I bet that like 1% of their fans would acknowledge that this isn't repeatable. Sports fans are funny. But Yadi and Freeze are "clutch"!!!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Allen Craig is magical. Yep. But Albert Pujols wasn't that great and didn't help them win the 2011 WS...
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 Yep. But Albert Pujols didn't help them win the 2011 WS... He wasn't a True Cardinal anyways.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Another great stat: Jon Jay has the second lowest SLG in post season history of any player with >100 PA Who is lower? Joe Girardi. When asked about it, Girardi joked "I can't believe they let me play that much" LOL
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Wainwright is KILLING the Pirates tonight
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 The Cardinals' 2009 draft class is a huge reason for their success in 2013, writes MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. That draft saw St. Louis tap Shelby Miller (first round), Joe Kelly (third), Matt Carpenter (13th), Trevor Rosenthal (21st) and Matt Adams (23rd). Crazy s***.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Wainwright is KILLING the Pirates tonight Wainwright's awesome. While I'd rather Pittsburgh win a Wainwright vs Kershaw duel in the NLCS would be amazing to say the least.
DwightDM Verified Member Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Crazy s***. A better single draft class than our past 10 years or so combined.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 Crazy s***. That's, like, 15 combined wins, isn't it?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 That's, like, 15 combined wins, isn't it? I'd kill for Carpenter alone
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 I'd kill for Carpenter alone I would probably hunt down and kill AA with my bare hands for Carpenter.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 Allen Craig is magical. He must be. He was just gifted a bonus out by an ump on a play at 1B.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2013 Posted October 10, 2013 lol another blown call... Can't wait for Selig to gtfo so we can have proper replay... f*** MLB for having someone who doesn't know how to use email be the commissioner. Edit: Nvm the call was actually right... Bud Selig still sucks though.

I still find it hilarious that none of the big time media outlets havent come out/written an article about how FOS they were when they proclaimed the Orioles as "winners" and a group of men that "just found a way to win".

Yep. Some people just refuse to accept that there is luck involved in baseball. Probably (maybe definitely) more than any other sport. Except maybe Tiddly Winks. Those things can fly anywhere.
