GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 I think it still looks pretty terrible. Shields and Myers are about the same caliber of player, only Shields is 31 and has one remaining year of control and Myers is 22 and has six years left. Shields has been good, but the cost of two seasons should not have been Wil Myers. That's just silly. Yeah, a fair assessment, in a vacuum the trade doesn't look great, but for a contending team, I think it's a justifiable move.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 IMO that's going to be a lot more difficult to say in 2015 if Shields has moved on and Wil Myers is putting up 5-win seasons in TB for 550K. I love Shields, but sometimes you just have to back away. They should have been able to build a deal around Ventura and someone else, and if not, forget Shields. It was rumored that it was either Myers or Salvy.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Yeah, a fair assessment, in a vacuum the trade doesn't look great, but for a contending team, I think it's a justifiable move. I don't agree with the narrative induced myopia that everyone comes down with when justifying the Shields trade. Funny that TB is even more of a contending team, and they took the other end of the trade. KC wasn't even a contending team when they made the trade. Getting a solid #2 like Shields helped them become a fringe contender that will probably finish a few games over .500 but fall short of the 2nd wildcard. They should have been building for the long haul. They got impatient and it's going to cost them significant value. Odorizzi will probably be a decent big leaguer at some point too. Wade Davis has been pretty bad. You could throw this deal and the Dickey deal into the same bin, even if KC wins ~13 more games this year. Pretty ugly trades that will forever make me think, "WTF?"
Nox Verified Member Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Wait, we're talking about the Shields trade in any other frame than a disaster for KC? It was an awful trade before the season. With the benefit of hindsight and Myers' progression this year it's something worse than awful. Shields was a 4 win upgrade on whatever shitbag they were going to run out there at the back of their rotation. Myers would have been a similar upgrade over Jeff Francouer (lol). Throw in the salaries/years of control and...yah. You get what you'd probably expect when GMDM and Friedman lock horns in a trade.
Nox Verified Member Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Yunel Escobar is crushing all other AL shortstops in WAR: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=al&qual=50&type=8&season=2013&month=0&season1=2013&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Imagine how much better we'd be if it weren't for eye-blackgate. No need to get Reyes and absorb Buehrle in the process. The Jays don't even think Escobar is a average defensive shortstop. So while the eyeblack scandal certainly wrote his ticket out of town, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they did that deal without the incident.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I actually don't mind Buehrle's deal, but that trade is crippling. We could have Escobar, our prospects, and then probably Abreu and Tanaka. Abreu and Tanaka were not available.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Some pitching today Nova and Cobb both on the verge of complete game shutouts
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Alex Cobb, not Moore. Damn you're fast Posted just before I fixed it
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Stupid Tropicana field. DeJesus loses ball in the lights of the roof and Davis gets to third base. Not a shutout any more. LOL
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Damn you're fast Posted just before I fixed it I'm a ninja. Actually I had just opened the thread to mention Cobb's gem. A gem ruined by his ballpark, and new LF who isn't used to it

Shields has been good, but the cost of two seasons should not have been Wil Myers. That's just silly. Sure it's still a bad trade, Davis they expected better from I'm sure ( not sure how long they get him ), and Myers has been very good. Most of the bad trades in baseball lately seem to revolve around teams acquiring starting pitching, which reflects on the shortage of that asset league wide. Some GMs have overcompensated. When I see aging inconsistant guys like Garza and what they may go for it complicates the topic. You can't win without decent pitching, at what price of your future though ? This is why trading D'Arnaud for Dickey might be ok, but including Syndegaard was likely a big mistake that can end a GMs career. Bautista for ( Cliff Lee plus useful spare parts or cash consideration ), would you do it ?
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 More has to come our way. Roman Quinn or/and Darrin Ruf. I could see ( Bautista + Cabrera ) for ( Lee + Ruf ). Phillies might want to shake things up for next year, their offence was pretty dead at times. If they took Cabrera off our hands it would make Lee's contract less of a burden.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 Tropicana Field that diagram makes it seem a lot closer than it is in reality. put the jays bat on the floor and then kick it away a couple feet... that would be more accurate.

Wow, so Jeter is a better defender than Escobar and, comparatively, Delmon Young is a better fielder too? I hate how the world works. I bet you 90% of this board could be groomed into a gm that could field a contender for the money AA is given. Amazing.
