They're really good at making baseball decisions, not so much at other stuff. By 2015 the Marlins could be the class of the NL East.

They're overrated at baseball ops due to some very lucky world series titles. Not saying they've been s*** long term, but IIRC they haven't even won a division title? And they've only made the playoffs twice?

In other words, normalize their playoff luck and they're a 20 year franchise with little more than a couple of 90 win seasons and early playoff exits followed by optically displeasing firesales.

I don't think the organization's reputation as a "shrewd cycler" is necessarily well deserved.

I agree that if they had a better figurehead and PR team, they could be in a decent spot. Unfortunately they have a terrible, slimy villain art collector at the helm, and apparently not even a PR intern.

Lincecum back to normal

IP, 3H, 3ER

He's always struggled against the Reds in his career.

I don't think Lincecum will ever be the same pitcher he was when he won the Cy's, though he's definitely capable of pitching the way he did in the second half last season. Still has solid K rates (125 K's in 116 IP this season).

It's the power of Shin-Soo Choo. Any pitcher would have trouble against that guy and the Reds lineup.

Choo adds a homer lol. Hopefully people don't start writing articles about the no-no pitch count affecting him.

Choo 24 dingers

.396 wOBA but awful D at CF

He's going to hit .300, pile up 100 walks and go 20-20. Too bad the Yankees will probably snap him up this winter.

The Yanks have an insane amount of players/money coming off the books this winter.

Cano, Robinson $15,000,000 FA

Granderson, Curtis $15,000,000 FA

Kuroda, Hiroki $15,000,000 FA

Pettitte, Andy $12,000,000 FA

Youkilis, Kevin $12,000,000 FA

Rivera, Mariano $10,000,000 FA

Hughes, Phil $7,150,000 FA

Logan, Boone $3,150,000 FA

Hafner, Travis $2,000,000 FA

Chamberlain, Joba $1,875,000 FA

Overbay, Lyle $1,250,000 FA

TOTAL = $94,425,000

They'll give Cano ~25 per and still have a f*** ton of cash to throw around.

Desperation move. Yankees are 4.5 back of Baltimore and sinking fast. And with Texas getting Garza, playoff hopes are looking bleak for the Yankees. This move was made so they can at least have resemblance of an MLB offense..they got shut out vs. Darvish yesterday on only 3 hits.

True--they'll just slide Melancon into the closer role and call up a reliever. Remember, Melancon was a closer in Houston(and was supposed to be Mariano Rivera's heir in NY)

Soriano still has some pop, but he's OBP .286.

@bradfo: Pedroia and Red Sox have agreed in principle on extension. Starts in 2015 goes to '21. Comes down to approximatey 7 years for $100 million

Meh, not too concerned with what the Red Sox are doing, because:

1. The Jays suck regardless.

2. The Sox still might not even make the playoffs considering how good the Rays, Orioles, and Rangers have been.

3. Ellsbury is likely gone after this year, and the chances of getting another year like this out of Lackey, Victorino, and maybe Iglesias are slim to none.

Posted

1. Agreed--we need to get some help in pitching, either from within(Drabek? Stroman? Nolin? Hutchison?) or trades(Norris?). We also need another bat.

2. Agreed--Boston is a bad stretch away from being right out of the mix, especially against contending teams like the Rays and Orioles. Boston's got Tampa, Baltimore, a surging Seattle team(7 straight wins!), and the D-Backs coming up. And August/September look tough for Boston--they need Buchholz back soon.

The Rays also have a more favourable sked as well. Keep in mind Texas still has many games vs. last place Houston as well.

3. Ellsbury's a Boras client--no way Boston's giving Crawford money again to an injury-prone OF. Iglesias is regressing(down to .351 now as he's getting exposed due to increased playing time--they need Bogaerts or Middlebrooks to come up soon to give a spark.) Lackey has been great--but gets no run support. Victorino can't stay healthy consistently.

Don't forget Daniel Nava--his OPS has dropped every month, as he wears down due to a career-high in playing time(not to mention he's a terrible OF defensively). Gomes isn't any better.

Haven't teams learned enough by signing guys to these ridiculously long contracts? It is essentially an 8 year deal now since it starts in 2015.

but he's not signing a 4 year deal, sometimes you do things to get them done. The Sox have had their share of clubhouse issues in the past few years, getting this done now is good PR...unless of course Ellsbury takes this as a slap in the face. Also this is really only a 6 year extension as they had a 2015 option on him and he's getting the same amount in that year.
