It's not credible to trash Springer's defence in RF based on a mere 38 chances, And some of the plays not made were not because he lacked range (see especially the first example). But because the plays weren't made, stats like OAA, which are heavily weighted for range, get distorted.
That being said, having a 35 year old play outfield is not optimal. But if the Jays are putting George at DH because his defence is degrading and Santander is not available, that shows signing Santander -- who is a terrible defender -- was just bad roster construction. (One fan who is a wiz with advanced metrics told me Santander's poor defence doesn't matter because -- he really typed this -- the Jays could hide Santander in LF because nobody hits the ball to left field.)
