Cobb was excellent last year. He even threw harder going from an avg from 93.2 MPH to 95.3MPH. It is pretty remarkable he has done that at 34.
I doubt the Giants would want Jansen though unless they believe they can compete starting 2023.
Baseball Trade Values is not perfect. That being said, the A's f***ed up even if the young players they get all become stars. They could have asked for more.
I disagree we are considerably worse. We keep believing offensive contribution provides higher value than defensive contributions when it does not. Springer in CF, Teo in RF, and Gurriel/Tapia in LF is much worse defensively than Kiermaier in CF, Springer in RF, and Gurriel/ in LF.
The bullpen should be better with Bass and Swanson here from the start. Regression from Manoah is hopefully mitigated with improvement from Berrios. Hopefully we can replace most of Striplings's production with a FA signing.
1- wRC+ is not catcher specific.
2- Fangraphs has Happ at 3.5 WAR not 4.4 WAR.
3- Jansen is far more productive in the games he plays than Happ is.
4- Jansen is not less valuable just because Kirk and Moreno are on the team.
5- Jansen's statcast profile is far better than Happ's over the past two seasons. As a matter of fact, Happ's was significantly lucky and produced much higher wOBA than xwOBA. Jansen's actual numbers were slightly lower than his statcast expectations.
5- None of Jansen's injuries are chronic and there is little reason to expect him to miss the same amount of time.
All of the above mean that Jansen is superior player.
Jesus Christ. Let's see.
Player 1:
140wRC+, 2.6 WAR over 248 PA last season (5.8 WAR per 550 PA), 4 WAR over 454 PA in the past two seasons (Avg 4.9 WAR per 550 PA). 2 Seasons of club control. 27 years old.
Player 2:
120wRC+, 3.5 WAR over 641 PA last season (3 WAR per 550 PA), 4.7 WAR over over 1176 PA in the past two seasons (Avg 2.5 WAR per 550 PA). 1 season of club control. 28 years old.
Yet, somehow, you think player 2 is far superior to player 1 in terms of value.
Exactly. So let Jansen provide his 130 wRC+ and hope he stays healthy to get 4+ WAR from him. As much as I would like to see Moreno on the team, he is still 23 and could start in AAA until a good trade is available.
Only the past two years matter for future projection. 3 years ago is ancient history in baseball. Rodon was non tendered 3 years ago. Ryu was good 3 years ago. Yelich was still considered an MVP contender 3 years ago.
Just to be clear, I like KK and I think he is a good addition. However, there are more rational ways to highlight the realistic value he will bring to the team instead of painting him as the elite CF defender he used to be.
For those who wanted Grisham, here is your Grisham equivalent. Please don't reference 2023 projections like they're the bible. Also, I do not care if KK produces 0.5 WAR less than Grisham. We ain't trading one of our catchers for a 0.5 WAR upgrade.
