    If we can develop our own pitching either ones we drafted/signed as int FA or ones we traded for from other guys systems over the next couple of years, then the window could continue. If we don’t it won’t. Cheap pitching is what extends window.

    Exactly. Also I know the rays gave up Adames for two relievers but one of those relievers has become a starter AND their system is loaded. Ours isn’t. We need to trade Jansen for a big value return. Not to plug roster needs right now. It doesn’t have to be any of the top 3 prospects Detroit have on fangraphs but I’d want 3/4 of guys we like below that.

    If they don’t want to give Soto, I’m fine giving up prospects to get relievers elsewhere. I’m not giving up Jansen unless it’s to an org that has good pitching depth and players that I think are underrated, and I want a haul of prospects. I don’t want to trade Jansen for immediate major league needs.

    Just saw a rumour that the tigers are interested in Jansen. If we trust our scouting and we like guys in their system, I’d totally do a Soto plus 2/3 prospects and another reliever deal. They usually have pretty good pitching prospects.

    Martinez is 20 in double A. That’s not a terrible number. Also, I’d bet money on Lopez being way above that by the end of the season. I’m disappointed by Jiminez. He’s a guy who could have had insane helium if he could hit.

    2 guys IÂ’ve been noticing in box scores recently are Otto Lopez in AAA and Cam Eden in AA. Both seem to be heating up.

    Fair. Half seasons or less than 162 don’t count. There’s a middle ground of 87 wins mediocre and doesn’t make the playoffs where I’m sad either way but I’ll take my chances lol.

    Probably just random reliever crap but seattle have had a few reliever success stories recently.

    I want them to trade for royals. The royals have drafted a ton of pitchers high that were rated highly and developed none of them well. Give me some of those guys.

    You have to be willing to do it at the deadline. If the Rockies (somehow) or the Phillies are 3/4 games out of the last wild card spot at the deadline, and there are guys in their system that you really think are well underrated, you need to be able to take advantage of that. In the off-season, teams will dream on their prospects stepping up or reclamation projects. At the deadline, a team under ownership pressure can mess up.

    I have a hard time seeing it either but I really think it would be a smart thing to do. The way baseball operates, money can only take you so far. The yankees and the dodgers are loaded and their starting rotations still feature 4/5 and 3/5 homegrown players each. Houston have 4/5. They aren't buying full rotations because its basically impossible to do so. For one thing, there are only so many good starting pitchers even available in free agency. You simply can't maintain windows without cheap or cheapish good cost controlled starting pitching. The only way I see that happening without literally trading every good prospect we have is to trade from the major league strength.

    Yea, that's what I meant. They can't pay him and pay other guys that are more important to pay. So, now's a great time to sell. Someone was talking about the Pirates Ray deal from a few years ago in the game day thread. Obviously, Teo isn't as enticing as three years of control of archer while he still seemed to be good but the only way to make those kinds of deals is by trading good major leaguers.

    What I would love to see at the coming deadline is a willingness to sell a little now for more future. Jansen has to go. It’s the shortest of short term thinking to carry a third catcher when most teams only have one good one. I also really think they should explore Teo trades at the deadline. He’s going into his last year of arb and there’s very little chance we can pay him. We have hitting right now. Trade him and Jansen for 3/4/5 close to the majors prospects, most of them pitchers. There will be a lot of teams who think they could sneak in this year. There will be a steal of a trade out there if we are willing to trade someone on the major league roster with value. Then trade for a rental hitter to replace Hernandez. Rental hitters are usually cheap. This might decrease our odds this year but they will increase our odds in the next few by a lot potentially. That’s a good deal imo.

    I guess. It’s 3 years away. Are we really going to follow through on it? Anyway, I’ll bet that we won’t be a 90 win team in 2026. That would be a 5 year window. Edit; let’s say 85 wins. 90 is too high a bar.

    Yea we are good, and should be good for another 2/3 years after this. And then bad.

    Ok, but easier said than done. We’ll need at least one starter in free agency and we have nothing in triple A that could take one of those spots. We need to trade for depth starters. We already pay a lot for pitching and manoah is still on the min but not for long. We have hitters coming off contracts in the next 2/3 years that will be tough to replace. This all screams short window to me. If this was Houston in 2018 where they also put a ton of money into pitching but they also had super interesting guys in the high minors I’d believe differently.

    True, we’ve done well on that side. But frankly hitting is less important for long term success. Cheap pitching = long term success.

    5 is probably optimistic. You can’t constantly buy free agency pitching and trade for starters every year and have a good enough farm eventually. You run out and do a cubs. It’s just how it works.

    You can’t be a perennial contender for years to come (if you mean more than 4/5) if you have to trade for major leaguers or buy most of your pitching. It’s unsustainable almost regardless of budget.

    The skyÂ’s not falling. I just have bigger expectations than a 4/5 year window and then bad again. ThatÂ’s what happens when you arenÂ’t elite at pitching dev and bullpen construction and we are OBVIOUSLY not elite at either of those things.

    Yankee fans are delusional. They consistently put together good deep pitching staffs and bullpens almost every year. We don’t even though we spend a lot of money and assets on the rotation at least and frankly have had decent injury luck. I’d have the Yankees FO a step below the rays and us on a different level of stairs maybe a floor down. We don’t do pitching well and that’s the most important thing.
