I get it, a lot of these guys don't even practice bunting anymore so it wouldn't have been practical.
I just think that if a team is down a run in the bottom half of the last inning, runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and 2 of your best hitters up next is almost a better situation than having a batter swing away with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Too much can go wrong when swinging away when the imperative has to be scoring at least 1 run. Because remember, it's not like they're on the road and need to score as many as possible. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, a groundball that sneaks through the defense wins the game.
This is why I'd like to see EVERYONE practice the small ball fundamentals more, even the sluggers. The name of the game is manufacturing runs and it puts more pressure on the defense and pitchers when ANYTHING is on the table.
I'll stress again tho, I get it. It's Vladdy. It would be like having Frank Thomas bunt with the game on the line haha. I just wish we'd see more outside the box thinking sometimes . There's very little surprise factor in the MLB anymore, there's the by the book way of playing and no one dares break away from that no matter what the case is. A perfect example would be Kevin Cash pulling Blake Snell during the World Series when he was absolutely cruising, just because the book says to pull a pitcher before the 3rd time through the lineup. Utter madness.
