  1. There is a difference between taking Spanish lessons and communicating with the community. I ASSumed that would be a requisite for them. Obviously not, ok, cool. The same questions are asked every time the Montreal Canadians tried to hire someone who does not speak French, or doesn't speak it well. Sacre Bleu!! I personally don't give a s***. Like others have said, at the end of the day if the person is best qualified, I am not into checking identity boxes and the goal is to WIN. Whoever can do that the best, all else doesn't matter. It was just a comment/observation that they didn't go that route (Latino) when I thought they might and some of Jeter's comments had made me think it was a requisite.
  2. Yes, I am aware of that. This is a new policy they put in place in 2018 or 2019. Per Jeter- "Well, especially here in Miami, if you don't speak Spanish, you don't fit in. I think it's important.'' Hence mandatory Spanish lessons for every exec/manager etc.. It was just an observation that since they think Spanish is so important. It actually speaks very highly of her that they hired her (assuming she is not fluent in Spanish) when that is an important component for that market and Jeter.
  3. Maybe she does know a little bit, maybe she is fluent for all I know. I just assumed they would be hiring a Latino GM due to the market and their unique needs. I would have said the same thing if they hired Shapiro. Atkins speaks Spanish but I don't believe Shapiro does.
  4. In 2019 Miami forced all their execs to take Spanish classes, including Jeter, since it is an essential form of communication in the Miami market. On a player bases, they target Cuban and Latino players to help with their fan base. I am not one for identity hiring and think the best person should get the job regardless. They must believe she is clearly the best person for the job, which is great. She will just have to make time for the mandatory Spanish lessons and be prepared to communicate in that medium with both the community and players.
  5. I am happy for her, I just always thought she would end GM on a west coast team. Miami doesn't seem like a fit for her at first glance. I thought they would bring in a Latino since that and the makeup of players is important for that team and the fan base..
  6. Plus they took Vernon Wells from us and paid his salary...! Just to pour salt in their wound..
  7. Old guy, let the computer get the best of him... At least he is alive and voting, can't say that for many other voters this past election..
  8. Still waiting for the next time you are drinking heavily for you to post in here that you want to do some trades;)
  9. That was a good call rostering him. I think I recall someone offering him to me in the offseason in one of my leagues when I was looking for a 1B. I passed thinking he wasn't going to have a great year and he was in decline.. I guess that is why you won the Championship and I didn't... LOL
  10. There is an educational and college prep component to it also. I highly doubt you are getting anything other then a certain style of baseball out of a DR Academy.
  11. IMG Academy adds keep on popping up on my FB. My oldest son is only 5 yrs old and we have baseball three times a week. I was curious when he reaches high school how much it would be to send him to IMG if he is still a good ball player since only about 2.5-3 hrs away... They do not offer scholarships.. PER YEAR: STUDENT-ATHLETE TUITION PACKAGE* BOARDING DAY $USD POST-GRAD (COLLEGE) $83,900 $67,900 HIGH (9th - 12th GRADE & POST-GRAD H.S.) $83,900 $67,900 MIDDLE (6th - 8th GRADE) $80,900 $64,900 PLUS! Medical Deposit* $400 Property Damage Deposit* $400 Personal Spending Deposit* $800 Tournament Deposit* $0 Student Activity/Competition Fee** (5th - 12th grade) $4,950 Student Activity/Competition Fee** (Post-Grad) $4,950 US Health Insurance Fee** Inquire Senior Fee** $450 International Fee*$1,050 Damn!!!
  12. This prevalent white guilt manifesting itself in everything these days is what is toxic....
  13. I actually tend to agree with you in general. It just seems like the currency on SP prospects is pretty high these days and it is very hard to acquire good ones in trade unless the return is huge.. Easier to find and acquire a hot 3B prospect then a hot SP prospect. I guess St Louis did it, but look who they ended up giving up.. Contrary to my argument, I would rather have Zac Gallen then Jaz Chisolm, but I think that trade is an exception to the rule.
  14. Caveat, I am not a Stroman fan. However, I think he was injured worse then he let on, or was not getting the performance he wanted due to injury and he made a strategic decision to have teams offer the QA or go to FA based on what he was prior, then to pitch like s***/injury season and the have to go to FA. I think the Covid opt out was all BS to deflect from his injury/performance being a FA year.
  15. Needs much more pitching IMO and I don't consider Pearson a prospect anymore. He has a guaranteed MLB spot and has been there unless the wheels really fall off.
  16. @Stro: I became rich by being an astute Hedge fund manager. That means I want a return on my investment. You better be worth $18 million a year and don't get hurt, kiss ass! - Steve.
  17. Why don't you ever get drunk and post this in BORED?
  18. They were talking about Stroman and TLR on MLB radio yesterday and today. A few take aways: They suspected Stroman was taking the QO when he spouted off about TLR. Prior to that they all thought he would go FA, he seems like the type who would bet on himself and go to FA, regardless of other factors like sitting out, coming off an injury. The "racist' issue with TLR was his comments about Kapernick disrespecting the Flag when the whole kneeling thing started years ago. 40 years of coaching by TLR and not one iota or peep out of any of his players about being racist. Probably an alcoholic and f***ed up big time with the second DUI, sets a piss poor example and highly irresponsible in this day and age with ride share etc, but not a racist. MLB players saying in their whole professional career that spanned many years, and coaches, TLR was by far the best communicator and strategist they ever played for. He was way ahead of his time in the use of data and very fwd thinking.
  19. From the bottom paragraph of my comment you quoted. There is a difference in, "not doing a damn thing" and doing something, a lot of things, and maybe not getting the expected/hoped for results.
  20. I agree with what you are saying, I think MLB does also. However, it appears you are asserting none of your suggestions/solutions are being done. They are, and have been. Are you familiar with the RBI program? This is an article from 2015 that outlines some of the efforts. In 2020 they have increased the % with more on the way. Again, it is a fair debate to ask if what they are doing works, or if they are concentrating on the right areas for improvement. However, they are 100% trying to do something about it and recognize the problem/issue. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2015/04/14/mlb-diversity-percentage-of-african-american-players-remained-flat/25791993/
  21. TLRs comments are not off base. MLB has had the RBI program for a long time, done a lot for years to try and attract more blacks to the game. Ironically the White Sox VP is black. Many of the games top upcoming stars are black, Jo Adel, Devin Williams, Jeter Downs, Josiah Gray, Austin Martin etc. The % is rising due to MLBs efforts. You can argue numbers and %, but to say they have not done anything is not accurate. Stroman is going to FA in 2020, coming off an injury. He is a short, little guy who is a SP. This will probably be his one and only legit FA opportunity. He is not Colin Kapernick, he has burnt bridges with the Jays and the White Sox now. He has the right to say what he wants as a FA and if $1-2 million is not a big deal to him then so be it. However, as any player will tell you baseball is a business first and foremost, and it is a stupid business decision at this point in his career by any objective standard.
  22. Try repeating everything TLR said in the voice and mannerisms of Hulk Hogan and it is kinda funny....
  23. Regardless of ones thoughts on TLR: To me it is not smart when you are a FA to basically eliminate 2 of the 30 teams right off the bat with your comments. Those guys all talk and you are eliminating possible leverage to use against other teams in FA. Not a smart business move IMO with the timing by Stroman to make his opinion public.
  24. Marcus Stroman is a twat. He seems to have an issue with a lot of people/teams now. He has ruled out the WS, Jays, doesn't like so and so.. I think it will end up hurting him in the long run. If a Team is assessing two players they deem equal for apprx equal $, I think Stroman's attitude and history will come back to bite him. Regardless of what we think of Shapkins, they are well respected in the game and if they thought he was an issue, I am sure others will also.
