Fangraphs has 2017 win predictions as follows (assume this is based on the Pythagorean expectation method): Red Sox 92 Indians 91 Astros 90 Jays 84 Angels 84 Mariners 83 Rangers 83 Tigers 83 Yankees 82 Rays 82 Orioles 79 I think they are predicting it pretty well, but the Jays still have more ‘dry powder’ while Boston is unlikely to add much. So maybe by the time the regular season starts, Red Sox are at 92 and Jays are at 86. The Sox will have all the expectations on them and are missing their Papi, so they could easily underperform. I am not ready to concede the division yet. ETA: They are predicting: Boston with 4.96 RS/G and 4.27 RA/G; Toronto with 4.81 RS/G and 4.66 RA/G Jays need to reduced the predicted RA/G - maybe bolster the bullpen ?

Yes and we all expected Indians would get to game 7 of the WS with 2 of their 3 best starters and Brantley on the shelf. Then there was that juggernaut Royals team in 2014. I mean who didn't see that one coming?!

I would give him the guaranteed $1.5M if that is what it takes to snag him because if he returns to form it is a risk that will pay off handsomely. Much smaller stakes than Robertson at $25M.

What about this idea: Seth Maness. He is a good ground ball pitcher with low HR/9, which would fit well in the ALE. Of course the question being how he comes back off the elbow repair surgery. He made $1.4M in 2016. Maybe if they could sign him for 1 yr at $1.5M.....

Actually I said "take the likes of a Danny Barnes in return". I think the reason I singled out Barnes is that he does show some intriguing potential upside and is ready to contribute now. I don't think we can assume White Sox are as desperate to unload Robertson as SD was with Upton. The assumption was they would want something other than a mid-level prospect or two. Jays sure aren't going to give top prospects, so maybe a guy who has shown a small sample of MLB proficiency is what will make it work. Anyway, now that we are all focusing on Barnes, let's hope he does as well as he show signs of (really just needs to continue what he showed in 12 MLB appearances last season over a full season and he will be golden).

Also there are things not measured by stats that come into consideration. I recall seeing it mentioned he has a reputation as a good teammate/clubhouse leader and has a championship with KC in 2015. He wasn't great in that playoff run, but he had his moments.

Yeah and the other issues with saves is they are not all created equal, depending on how big a lead you have to work with. That idea of Smoak for Robertson kind of makes sense. If you look at the current White Sox, there is no obvious DH and Smoak would also provide backup for Abreu at 1B.

Yes they gambled successfully on Grilli and Benoit. But they didn't give up much of anything in those trades and both were free agents after 2016. I guess taking on the salary without having to give much in return, like you suggested, might be a worthwhile risk and would certainly be a strong signal to the fans that they are serious about contending now.

I think we should always remind ourselves that Toronto is not a desirable destination for free agents and that the Jays can be assumed to need to 'overpay' to get them in general. Also just remember those spray charts that predict he will be a good fit for ALE parks and think happy thoughts

I think you may be on to something. Moss grew up 30 miles outside Atlanta, so that KS/MO part of the country may be more comfortable for him.

Jays already got burned in 2016 with Storen, assuming he was likely to bounce back. Too much money to take on here, hoping for a return to elite form.

If it was only for 1 year I might agree. But he is due $12M in 2017 and $13M in 2018. That's too much for a reliever who is about to turn 32 and showing signs of decline (only an 84% save success rate in 2016 with inflated BB9 and FIP). Maybe if they would send Robertson and $10M and take the likes of a Danny Barnes in return, it makes sense. Otherwise I agree with others it is better to spend the money on available free agents.

It's an interesting article. It would be kind of ironic if Ed Rogers was wanting them to spend a lot more on payroll, only to have the FO decide to go more conservative. I think they are doing the right thing at this stage by waiting it out a little longer, but wouldn't be surprised to see them add 1-2 more free agents if they can get them on 1 year deals.

Doubtful. Anyway, the current estimate (look at original post on this thread) with Pompey($520k) substituted by Salta..... ($1.25M) would be about $153.6M. It the earlier touted opening day target of $160-165M is for real, that still leaves some money to work with.

Regardless of the number of years on the contract, he is unlike to get more than $10M guaranteed (even that is probably stretching it).

I think you summed it up well. Over the past three seasons Carter has total 3.3 fWAR, while Smoak has a dismal +0.1 total fWAR (was actually negative in 2 of 3 of those seasons). But the key to obtaining Carter should be unloading Smoak and not having to eat more than half the $8M owed to him. An earlier post mentioned Carter costing $10M, which I think was assuming Smoak salary of $4M was burned and paying $6M to Carter. They could also get lucky and have someone claim Smoak on waivers. But I still would prefer Moss, since he has the LH bat and is a decent defensive LFer. If the Jays can get Moss for 1 yr, $8-10M, I would prefer that route

Your point is valid in some situations like what G-snarls said about Rizzo and Italy. BUT this is a much different issue. If you are born outside Canada to at least one Canadian born parent, you automatically are eligible for 'birth-right citizenship'. My kids born in the USA fall in this same category as Freeman. Not all countries have that rule but Canada and USA (see Ted Cruz) have it. It dawned on me that Votto probably bowed out to give Freeman a shot. -

Freeman's parents are both from Canada. His mother is from Toronto, while his father is from Windsor. He therefore also holds Canadian citizenship in addition to American citizenship. The reason he singled out his mother was she died when he was only 10 years old and wanted it as a tribute to her. -
Actually the trolling started with post #54 of this thread. Then you just jumped on his bandwagon throwing haymakers at anyone who came in your path. Why don't you go back to trying to discuss baseball intelligently instead of hurling personal insults.

Like I said, it's not a sports thing. Seems I touched a nerve ........ ETA: I don't condone Grant's comment about Southern Ontario being a 'sh*thole". My brother lived in metro TO for 7 years and I visited several times. It is a very nice city, albeit overpopulated just like many of it's counterparts south of the border.

Yes far beyond sports, Southern Ontario has always put on this air of superiority to ROC that attempts to mask that underlying inferiority complex regarding how they are perceived by Americans.

It's probably more nationalism than anything. The same thing that has people cheering their countrymen on at the Olympics in some obscure sport that would normally get little to no attention from the general public. MLB, like the Olympics, is the big stage. And there is the aspect of beating the Americans at their own game.

Yes playing up the issue of this team being for all of Canada needs to be in moderation, which is why the red jerseys for every Sunday home game is a TERRIBLE idea (undoubtedly a step too far). But there is also the financial benefits that come with all those millions of extra potential fans, so it's good business on the ownership's part. Comparing the situation to a storied American team with fans across the region is probably an apples and oranges thing. The long history of baseball as America's pastime versus the relatively short history of MLB baseball in Canada is a stark contrast. I know something of the 'regional' thing, living in Indiana with generations of Cubs fans (very happy for a change).
