I wouldn't give Fowler or Cespedes 5 year deals. Neither are good enough to justify that type of commitment. They can only demand these type of deals because the FA class is so bad.
They really aren't interested in everyone though.
They are avoiding guys asking for more than 3 years (other than maybe EE). They are avoiding guys with draft pick compensation. It sort of narrows down the potential pool of talent they can get.
Morales, Smoak, possibly Bruce? How many one dimensional players do the Jays need? These 3 would cost 30 million and you'd be ucky to get 2 WAR from them combined.
After sleeping on this, I hate the 3rd year of this deal. Don't like the idea of committing long term to a guy who has no defensive or speed impact, that's in his mid 30s already, who really is only an average, maybe slightly above average bat.
Seriously, I don't mind this deal. Although I hate the 3rd year. He can probably provide 25-30 HRs and an 800 OPS which is fine for a 11M player.
But they better have a good plan to make up the difference after downgrading from EE to Morales.
