    Hoffman has a single bad outing in the last 7 weeks or so. The struggles of May appear to be completely behind him at this point.

    I don't know man, one of the board experts boldly proclaimed that Hoffman can't be the closer in the playoffs so he probably sucks.

    The Jays broadcast mentioned he was playing through several minor injuries at the moment.

    I believe that's largely due to Gimenez being on the IL due to injury. The team doesn't really have a left handed infield option to play in Ernie's place at the moment.

    It's far from a given that Robertson is going to continue being a top reliever. Going strictly from memory guys who signed this late in the past generally haven't performed particularly well. Is Robertson even ready to jump into game action straight away? I had a peek at the announcement from Ken Rosenthal, and with the Phillies being over the 4th luxury tax level their total cost for a few months of Robertson is $12 million. For a 40 year old reliever that won't likely be ready for a few weeks at minimum that's a hard pass for me.

    Rogers is perfectly willing to spend but $6 million for 15-20 innings of a non elite reliever is positively ludicrous.

    Varsho is in the lineup for the FCL team at the moment so he could conceivably make it back within the next week or so barring any setbacks.

    I'd be interested as well to hear how the major league hitting staff impacts the organization as a whole.There obviously wouldn't be time for these coaches to work directly with the minor league players in season, but I do suspect that they would be directly involved in working with these players at the training complex in the offseason.

    I don't have the same feeling. I think we haven't seen a fully healthy Alek Manoah dating all the way back to the 2022 season. Even if he doesn't ever reach the previous heights as a top of the rotation arm I think he has a very good chance to at least be an effective back of the rotation starter.

    Ugly results to be certain but one plus was that Alek's velo was solid. Command was awful to say the least and the slider stuff results look terrible as well. Hopefully the low slider stuff was more a result of lack of feel vs being a terrible pitch.

    Suarez would be cool but that would likely lead to a pretty lousy defensive alignment the bulk of the time. If you had all of Springer, Santander and Suarez in the lineup that would feature 2 subpar defenders at minimum in the lineup most days before even accounting for Bo at short stop. The Blue Jays pitching staff is largely middle of the pack this season, and reducing the quality of the defense would likely have a sizable effect on the overall run prevention of the team. Perhaps the team would largely be able to outhit this issue at times, but in the post season when the margins tend to be tighter a porous defense could be a major issue as the rotation largely survives on the defense turning balls in play into outs at an elevated rate.

    I suspect that the Pirates front office would be at the point by now that they would be thrilled to get Hayes' contract off of the books at any point on the calendar. They've likely seen more than enough to suggest that they aren't capable of reliably extracting more offense from him which is a bit of a shame given the otherworldly defense he is able to offer. I just don't like him much as a Blue Jays target though given the lengthy contract he features, and I just think he's largely redundant given the pieces on the roster. I broke down his splits vs RHP over the combined 2024/2025 seasons up to this point and they are dreadful. He's produced a 52 wRC+ vs RHP in this period and if the bat didn't rebound to a large degree that's a player that's only useful in a platoon situation, and not enough so to justify the salary.

    I just have a hard time seeing a lot of value in acquiring Hayes as the team already has a tremendous third base situation with a Clement/Barger platoon, and each player is very inexpensive at this point as well. Straw has been somewhat of a pleasant surprise this season, but the bat has largely trended back to where it was expected to be and having several largely glove only players earning real money would be a poor use of available financial resources. Perhaps Hayes could be a throw in to lessen the prospect cost for other Pirates players acquired through trade as Atkins did mention he could flex a little financial muscle, but I have a bit of a hard time seeing how Hayes makes the Blue Jays a better squad.

    If I'm not mistaken I believe this was the first draft under the new scouting director Traumata, so perhaps he places a little more emphasis on position players. I do suspect it's a little more likely that this is simply how the cookie crumbled in terms of best player available at their respective draft positions, but the team did a tremendous job stocking up on pitching in last year's draft so I do see how it could be possible they shifted focus a little bit.

    I think not having a second round pick changes the available budget to the degree that it greatly affects the total upside of the combined picks. There's far less overall money available to spread around on higher upside players in later rounds and a relatively underwhelming draft class is the result. I really hope that MLB and the players union find a way to remove the qualified free agent penalty in the upcoming CBA as it does nothing but disincentivize teams spending on free agents due to actively hamstringing their ability to build through the draft. I think MLB has gone a little too far in handing out draft bonuses to the smaller market clubs with the added competitive balance picks that are handed out, and I hate the fact that these picks can be traded when the rest of the regular picks can't be.

    I wonder if George Springer made similar swing changes as well, albeit without the torpedo bat.

    We had the same concern about the Orioles and they've completely cheaped out in recent offseasons despite new ownership. Hopefully the same happens with the Rays.

    Shoulder surgery is always a scary proposition though.

    I think Detmers is a stud in relief and could potentially be converted back to starting as a bit of a longer term project. I suspect that Atkins would need to eat a bunch of salary and/or attach added prospect capital in a deal such as this as Berrios is likely viewed as a negative asset at this point and Detmers has a pile of remaining control.

    None of this exactly screams that Berrios is the type of pitcher that other teams would be lining up to acquire.

    It looks to me like the team is running on fumes right now. That's perfectly understandable given the 19 game is 20 day meatgrinder schedule they endured heading into the break.

    Another guy I'm interested in seeing more of at the major league level is Lazaro Estrada. I was really impressed with how he commanded his arsenal. I thought he had the makings of a guy who could be an effective back of the rotation starter.

    I'd say a catcher should be right around the bottom of the team's deadline shopping list.

    Well to be perfectly fair the lol at the end of nearly every post makes it impossible to discern whether you are joking or not. Maybe you should add emojis or amusing gifs when you are attempting to make a joke so the rest of us can tell.
